The End of Charcoalstandards [SPOILERS]
« on: June 03, 2012, 07:24:46 am »

So all the dwarves in my fort went to the circus and never came back, and I wanted to write a story about it. Let me regale you my tale. Hope you like it.
From the diary of Urist Kolatol, Engraver
19th Granite, 16

I had that dream again.

There was a giant eagle, a roc, and it was flying. It was a majestic being, gold and burning all over and it was circling a mountain. It perched on top, let out a mighty roar, and... and the dream ends. I've been having that dream for some time now. I don't know what it means though, and I doubt I will ever find out.

The mayor, Thikut Ironspray, came by the hospital, bringing me a hot meal. He sat down next to me and he said, "Urist. You're the greatest artist of this generation, Urist. This fort needs you."
"Mayor, I'm very flattered, but I can't right now," I said. Curse this arm. I was minding my own business when those idiots took down the staircase wrong, and before I knew it, I was on the ground, in pain, dying, and I could see the bone in my arm. I was lying in a pool of my own blood and I blacked out. When I came to, I was here.

Well, that's not exactly true. When I came to, I was in somebody's arms. I was in his arms. Lor saved me. A true friend, that dwarf. I owe my life to him.

Truth is, though, my arm's feeling much better now. I just don't want to do anything this jackass asks of me.

"'Tis a shame, Urist. The entire second and third levels are yours to engrave, but if you say you can't, then there's nothing I can do," he said. "I'll go ask Avuz if he wants a t-"
"On second thought, Thikut... I think I can manage," I hastily replied, standing up from my bed. Not Avuz. Anybody but Avuz. That elf-loving git can find work elsewhere. I'd rather die than give him that satisfaction of defacing this glorious fortress' walls. I stood up and grabbed a drink, before surveying my new canvas. The third floor is home to a farm, a kitchen, the hospital, the entrance to the catacombs and the Nobles' quarters. I engraved the count's room when he was just a baron. Snuck in a lot of images of dwarves killing goblins, I did. He didn't seem to mind though. Crazy fool.

The second floor is home to the workshops, and a few corridors. One of the corridors was walled off two years ago. I don't know why.

I decided to engrave just one section today, somewhere on the third floor, just near the staircase. My dream. I wanted to show them that I'm back, after all, and these plebeians wouldn't settle for anything less than a grand tour de force, would they? Of course not. I'm not like Avuz, content with his crude rock drawings. No, this is an image of the great roc, settling down the Barbs of Lullabys in the year 1. Satisfied with my masterpiece, I'm back in my room, ready to end the day.

Something interesting, though, before I end this entry: I heard the miners found another cavern. I'll probably engrave about that someday. Tomorrow?

It's... not very good.

14th Felsite, 16

Work on the engravings has been slow. The mayor has forced me to contract help from other Engravers. There's three of us working now. Me, that damn Avuz, and a gaunt dwarf named Tosid, who looks like he's always about to hurl. An unkempt dwarf, hair all over the place, even in places where there shouldn't be hair. He has the colour of quartzite around him, probably because he spends so much time hauling the stuff around, and he reeks of blood and vomit. Well, at least he's better than Avuz. He's alright in my book.

I had that dream again yesterday, with the roc. I haven't dreamt that since Spring, and the elves arrived to be slaughteredd. This is the first time in months. I still don't know what happens after he perches though. I've also found myself engraving the image quite a few times. I try not to, but it just happens.

I'm sorry I did not get to write yesterday. Yesterday, I engraved this marvelous depiction of Lor killing the cyclops. I think that was three years ago. They named him the Savage Skulls because of that feat. Or was it after he killed that coral beast in the caverns? My memory ails me. Curse it.

My right arm sometimes aches. I haven't had this problem before. Yesterday, I went to the chief medical dwarf, Catten, and she told me that was normal, and to just drink it away. "Drink it away" was her solution to everything. I'd be a better doctor than that hack, but she did nurse my arm back to health, and for that, I thank her.

I saw Lor today. He's the Force Commander, in charge of the entire military, and his squad is stationed inside the caverns, but I see him pop up every now and again when there's a lull in the action. We caught up on a lot of things. Apparently, one of the Speardwarves in his unit, Stukos, gave birth to a boy while she was sparring with Lor. Funny. I'll engrave that sometime.

Today is the 14th of Felsite. It's been three years since I first got here. Time flies.

22nd Galena, 16

The miners have found the blue gold! Praise them indeed. I'll be engraving about that sometime.

I can't help but shake this bad feeling though. Something's going to happen. We best be careful.

3rd Sandstone, 16

There was a cave-in in the Adamantine mine yesterday. Three miners. Two of them dead. The third one, Tosid, who migrated with me back then, was left there. I hope they get to him alive. I hope it's not that bad. I can't work like this. I'm starting to realize that maybe, Catten's advice wasn't so bad after all. Drink it away, eh?

17th Timber, 16

The Dwarven Caravan from the Mountainhomes has arrived. Our broker, Zas, is trying to negotiate the entire caravan for a few pieces of the blue rock. Sly git, that broker, I think he'll do it. He's our second broker, come to think of it. The first one died when they were dismantling the stairway. I guess he was a good replacement after all.

The miners has arrived to a vast expanse of magma. I've been down there once. It was a true sight to behold. The sea was red and bright, warmth from the sea emanating and giving life. Truly, this is where a dwarf should be. By my estimate, the sea is a hundred and fifty levels below the ground.

I don't like that place, though, for all its benefits. I hear strange whispers when I'm down there. It's probably the wind, but it's very chilling. I'm better off here, safe and sound, engraving my rocs and Lor.

18th Timber, 16

I visited Tosid in the hospital today. It was hell. His legs were crippled. Smashed and ground, but it's not gone. The bone's still there, but I doubt he'll be able to stand ever again. I gave him a drink and I urged him to give up mining. Nobody will blame him anyway. That cave-in was an accident. A slight oversight. I think it was more than that, though. I think it was because of the adamantine, but I won't tell him that. They say adamantine makes dwarves go a bit insane, but in this hell that we live in, insanity is nothing.

What Tosid told me though, was simply unnerving.

"I must go back, Urist. The stone beckons. They have to get out."

They. I think what they say about adamantine is true. I can't tell Tosid that, though. In any case, I doubt he'll be mining anytime soon.

I engraved my thirteenth roc. Thikut kept asking me about that, "Hey Urist, why all the birds?" he says. He doesn't understand. He doesn't appreciate the art like I do. These rocs... they mean something. Thikut's a bit thick on the head, anyway. Oh, that was lame.

It's a good thing nobody will be reading this diary though.

It's still not good, but hey, plot development! Yay!

Sorry, had a long day today, so this won't be a lot. I type this as I go along, so bear with me.

1st Moonstone, 16

I have started making headway on the second floor. I've made the decision to stop engraving rocs, but sometimes I just find myself doing it. It's insane. The dreams have become more frequent too. Frankly, I'd rather lose sleep than be subject to the same image again and again. What's worse is that I heard the dwarves call that elf-lover Avuz a legendary engraver. They say that he is my equal. Him! That quisling? I'm offended.

I saw Tosid walking again today, and for that, I am thankful. He needs a crutch to walk now, but he's getting better at it each passing day. His skill with the pick is still sound. I fear that he will try to go down there once more.

Ever since that day, I can't help but think about what Tosid said to me in the hospital. It was really unnerving, to say the least. Who were they? I try to tell myself that they were only the ramblings of a man delirious with sobreity, but I have a gut feeling that there's more to it than that. Ah.

I keep on seeing more weapons crafted out of adamantine. The soldiers seem to like it, though some still prefer cold hard steel. I can never be a soldier. I'm just not cut out for great deeds of bravery. I'd rather be engraving, really.

I saw a blind cave ogre recently. He was a towering beast, grey as stone and hardened from years of living in the darkness of the caverns. Maybe the miners disturbed his slumber? In any case, he didn't manage to cause much of an issue, being blind and all. Lor's squad, the Rough Elbows, dispatched of him quickly.

The Rough Elbows. Ten elite dwarves. The best of the best, armed to the teeth with cold steel and honed from years of experience. I remember just last year, when the Sin of Typhoons sent forth the largest siege yet. I remember their General was there, a bit taller than the other goblins, riding a giant toad. Lor and his men put up a great fight and slaughtered every single goblin who dared stand against Charcoalstandards. That was a glorious day, and I have engraved of it countless times.

Today is the first day of winter. The winds are especially chilly today. There's something different.

5th Moonstone, 16

Word is that our supply of adamantine is almost used up. I can believe that. Everything is blue gold in this fortress. Word is, the miners have found another vein, in the middle of the sea of magma, and they'll be trying to mine that soon. Tosid was apparently the one who suggested the idea. They will channel from above, being careful not to pierce the sea, or so one of the miners told me. I, myself, only have elementary knowledge of mining. I certainly hope that no more accidents happen this time.

8th Moonstone, 16

This page is empty, save for the words "THEY COME" scrawled on it. Nothing else is written.

Something has happened! Fun times are going to happen. This will end soon, and it won't be fun for any of them.

So, how are you guys liking it so far?

Sorry for the delay. Had a long day, got lazy, etc. etc. You know how it is, right?

10th Moonstone, 16

It's been two days. I finally have the time to gather my thoughts. Two days ago, the miners have found a hollow portion in the adamantine vein. I was there when it happened. It was dark. Then an eerie crimson glow. Then screaming. An unholy wail from the depths, and suddenly, the worst things I have ever seen in my life. Beings... creatures from the depths wrought of evil and death. Demons. We had opened the gates of Hell.

The entire military was brought down immediately. All squads positioned themselves at the corridor waiting to intercept the horde, 60 dwarves in all. There was a rumbling in the very earth, then a loud screech, and then... hell itself opened its maw.

They came from everywhere. From the hole the miners dug out. From the magma forges. The smelters. The men were surrounded. None of the miners got out alive. I couldn't get out. I didn't want to. It was mesmerizing, somehow. The battle was fierce, but ultimately one-sided. I could count over a hundred demons, composed of strange compounds and each more terrifying than the last. The dwarves engaged the oncoming onslaught, tried to hold the line, but the numbers got to them. They were utterly decimated. When one of those fiends was struck down, two more would arise in its place. In the end, the entire military was utterly decimated, and the order was called to retreat. I had to go too, if only to preserve myself. Out of the sixty dwarves that engaged the enemy, only 22 remained. They all stationed themselves in the cavern outpost, barricading themselves in, should a last stand be necessary. Around twenty demons were slain. I had to go back to the surface.

Along the way I noticed somebody going down. I asked him if he was insane, but he told me that he was simply getting the adamantine statue the count asked of him. What an idiot, both he and the count. I didn't stop him.

When I got back up, everybody kept asking me about what happened, and I was obliged to tell this tale. I wish I hadn't, though. Yesterday, a group of dwarves went down. I saw Zasit with them, and I asked them where they were going. He told me that it was his duty to defend the fortress. They scrounged extra weapons and armor from around the fort, and they were going down to fight. I told them that it was useless; if a hardened military can't defeat them, what hope do they have? Neophytes who don't even know how to hold a sword properly. zasit wouldn't listen. They still haven't returned. I only pray they went to the barricade. Lor could train them.

If only I could go down with them. If only I had the courage. Damn this. Damn it all.

The work on the second floor isn't finished yet. Our great mayor, Thikut, along with that damn count, told everybody to calm down and act as if nobody is dying and hell isn't wide open and we're not going to die before the new year. I don't know what they were thinking, but at least they're trying to keep a sense of normalcy around here. Good for them.

22nd Moonstone, 16

No news on the front. I asked Lor, what of Zasit, but he says he never saw them come down. I can only fear the worst. Those idiots. When I told him about Zasit, he immediately went down to look for them. I urged him not to, it was dangerous, but he insisted. He went back up the next day, Zasit's corpse in tow, but visibly beaten. I asked him what happened. He told me, he met a demon seventy levels down and fought it. He won, thankfully. He had to sneak the rest of the way down to the 150th level, where the demons were. They were there, but they seemed to be biding their time for some reason. Zasit's men didn't seem to reduce the enemy's numbers in any meaningful way. Fools. Died in vain.

I asked Lor, what about above-ground defense, and the goblins, and he assured me that they won't be attacking any time soon. After they killed their General, he told me, he seriously doubts that they'd try to attack again. Goblins are simple creatures. A few feats and fear cripples them, he told me. I carried Zasit's corpse back and buried him. Along the way, I noticed the count had a new statue in his room. I guess that idiot managed to sneak in and grab the statue. That idiot was a dwarf named As, who had the shortest beard I ever saw in a dwarf. He was probably an elf-lover too, like that damn Avuz.

Speaking of Avuz, I haven't seen him quite lately. I wonder where he went.

13th Opal, 16

The last few days have been purely evil. The demons have reached the barricade and slaughtered the dwarves there on the 10th of Opal. Only four managed the survive, Lor, Stukos, and two others. They hurriedly ran back to the surface levels. There was this look of absolute fear in Lor's face that day. His left arm was also mangled, but said he'll manage. This was the first time I ever saw him afraid of anything. To see the dwarf that I have looked up to for so long, ever since I came here two years ago, so vulnerable and defeated... it was too much.

The mayor made a speech earlier today. He ordered the walls in the second level to be deconstructed. I didn't know why the walls were there, or what the purpose of deconstructing those walls was, but he only gave the order and muttered, "May Armok save us all." So I decided to do it. I wish I hadn't, though.

After tearing the wall down, a huge torrent of water came. That insane cur! He's trying to flood the fortress! I realize that this was his way of trying to preserve the fort, but was there no other way? Damn him. The water was slow, as it came straight from the river, and the corridors were wide, but soon enough the entire fort will be submerged in a pool of death. A census was done. There were less than fifty dwarves left.

There is no peace in this hell. Charcoalstandards will forever be known as the doorway to hell. The days wind down and there is no stopping the demons, and Lor is injured, and all I can do is engrave.

1st Obsidian, 16

It is the last month of winter. Soon, we will reach the new year, but I fear that we will not make it that far. The flooding of the fort is taking longer than expected, and everybody is on edge. The demons can come any day from now.

Thirty seven. That's how many of us are left. There used to be forty six, but ten more dwarves decided that it was a good idea to check where the demons are. Two of them I knew, Erush and Ovuz. Brothers. Only one came out alive. She said they met the demons seventeen levels down. They were getting close. They'll be here before the 1st of Granite.

I found Avuz. He locked himself inside a warehouse. He's gone insane, that fuck. I tried to reason with him, but he wouldn't budge. The warehouse, a room filled with finished goods on the second floor was right next to the corridor, and where the wall-dam used to be. Soon, I had to go, and accepted Avuz' fate. By this time, even if Avuz wanted to go, he wouldn't be able to get out, on account of the watery grave that awaits him.

I overheard the mayor say something about a final assault, though. That can't be good.

3rd Obsidian, 16

This page is torn cross-wise. The entire half-page was the phrase "We have to get out" written over and over again.

5th Obsidian, 16

Another meeting. Thikut told us that we have to defeat the demons here, else the entire world will fall to chaos. Nobody disagreed. Everybody has that look in their eyes. That fire of determination. All these dwarves... they're willing to die here. I wish I was that brave. The mayor asked for a vote. All those who were willing, ready, prepared to fight, are to fight. Anybody else is free to go.

I wanted to leave there and then, but I can't. I couldn't. I was frozen in place, out of fear and out of embarassment. I knew that message was for me. It was no secret that I wanted to leave, by that point, but I decided to stay. I cleared my throat, and the mayor looked at me.

"What if... we caved them in?" I told them. "We, we bury them under the rock, so they can never... never do anything. Ever."

Silence. The entire room was silent. No more words were spoken. We will stop them at the fifth level, no matter the cost.
