I *think* they can be made friendly with minor edits to the raws.

Make an obsidian castle on the higest point. Make wooden huts for the kobolds. Wait for a vampire. Re-enact the original Dracula movie. The mayor is Renfield, bug eating and all.


I do wonder, can you embark on top of an ant man hive? Do they even make hives?

Yes, if you dig into a cavern they may have a ant-man civ.

You said there is a river and a volcano. Clearly these features need to be used.

I say, cage the kobolds. Carve out a corridor, place the cages along its walls. Flood it. Obsidianize it. Carve out the walkway.  Smooth the walls.

You have now completed the kobold Pompeii museum.

After seeing what a random kobold ninja with a copper dagger did to my legendary hammerdwarf, I'd say open up the HFS and let them duke it out...

Certainly you could argue that DF is a lot like The Sims, only... you know... with more vomit and decapitation.
If you launch a wooden mine cart towards the ocean at a sufficient speed, you can have your entire dwarf sail away in an ark.

I say use them as your cavern clearance system. Dig down further through their cave, but not your fort, if possible and whatever comes up will have to go through them first.

Either that or sanctuary. Your Dwarfs dedicate themselves to conserving the kobolds at all costs.

Yes there is. Sort of ... if you enter the military screen and you go to the "assign specific weapon" part of the uniform; you will see a list of all available weapons. This includes the spears and blowguns of an underground civ.
 It doesn't say WHAT civ there is so you might have rats or lizards or something ... but atleast it confirms that something is living down there in the deep. The kobold's gear might show up in the list as well.
