Uh... what?
« on: June 02, 2012, 02:28:20 pm »

This is new. I have never seen this happen before.

A Kobold propelled away by the force of an impact. An impact of a copper crossbow bolt?  :o

WTF is that guy shooting with? A hand held Ballista?

The 'bold probably doesn't weigh much more than the bolt.

There was a "Are Crossbows still OP" thread... I think we should hide this away from them <.<

I never saw this happen before either. Perhaps the crossbow is Legendary/Masterwork? Not sure if that would influence the force in any way, but it might be part of the explanation.

I notice that the skids only happened when the bolts struck roughly center of mass, i.e. upper body and lower body.

Valuing life seems too close to an aesthetic rule for me, I think.
Only in Dwarf Fortress is the value of life placed as "aesthetic."

Probably took the hit and it caused him to double over or knocked him off balance, prompting a face/backfirst smack into the ground.

Once this happened with a berserking child in one of my forts.

The skidding is part of the new parabolic arc flight thing added with minecarts. Things can now skid across the ground or even of the surface of water.

Does that mean you could technically punch somebody so hard he would... skid on the ground? In Dwarf Fortress that is.

I punched someone in adventurer mode, he flew back and smashed his skull.

Right that is. Now all we need is a reliable way to do this with the elves and goblins...

I am awaiting somebody's battle report where a Dwarf insta-kills a dragon with a punch. I know it sounds completely unlikely... but I have high hopes.

Its just a Superior quality crossbow and its shot by a competent marksdwarf. Nothing special.

Each arrow weighs slightly over 1L or whatever the unit of measurement is.

Don't see anything special. Must simply be that the kobold is really just that small.

It must be the bolt. The bone bolts don't cause it to slam into anything, but copper bolts do.

My hunch is that the velocity of bolts is static, and when you use a denser material for the bolts it increases the momentum, which causes small creatures like kobolds to get knocked back.
