Useless youths?
« on: June 02, 2012, 08:43:58 am »

I've played this fort for a very long time, and kids born here are starting to grow up. The thing is, do they get other job experiences during childhood than growing?

You can force them to do hauling and stuff with Dwarf Therapist, I believe.

I also recently asked a similar question and was thinking of suggesting "Dwarf children should learn skills as they watch their parents do stuff." but I never got to it.

Yeah, now instead of immigrants I get a load of useless peasants... I guess they'll be joining the militia at the age of 12 :D.

Turn all dwarves farm on and then assign them to a burrow encompassing your farm areas and assign all children and farmers to it.  Then they'll grow up gaining attributes as well as farming experience in addition to actually being useful.

Hmmm... The kids are taking over my fort. The oldest kid just won the election. I imagine that my fortress degrades when time passes, eventually becoming a simple farming community surrounded by ancient walls and pieces of art. That is, unless they start getting strange moods.

A good idea is to give all new kids basic training in at least one profitable profession. Since skilless peasants will have wood/bone/rock crafter moods, whle a peasant with adequate weaponsmithing skill becomes a legendary weaponsmith!

Alternately, give them some good armor, and send them at the goblins!

or apprentices!

if there is a caste system then you might have parents trying to get there kids to get the best professions possable.

I hope they'd add some sort of apprentice system, where a dwarf (an armor smith, for instance) would show some kid how their work is done, and so when the kid grows up, he has some proficiency in the labor (novice or something).

Yeah, like squires. Kids should throw rocks at enemies too, when sufficiently safe! :D

I also don't like how the children spend 12 years and can only have farming skill and maybe a little masonry skill.  I mean if a child wandering around the barracks, forge, or other workshops then the child should 'obviously' have learned something during 12 years.

It would embarrassing/shameful for any parent to have a 12 year old child without any skills, knowledge or abilities... ... but it happens in dwarf fortress for the majority of children.       :(

How many people in the real world could do anything useful at 12 years old?  Not claim it, not believe it, do it.  Hell, how many people in the real world can do anything useful as adults?

I don't think it hurts verisimilitude that much for 12 year olds to mature into mostly unskilled peasants.  It would be nice if they didn't, but it's no egregious error that they do.

It's useful to keep a ‼torch‼ handy.
