Cats everywhere!
« on: June 02, 2012, 05:23:58 am »

The event called "catsplosion" happened in my fort. Do these four-legged devils have a population cap, or will their numbers just keep on rising?

The pop cap for any one animal is 50 as I recall.  I think you can import more after the cap is reached but you can't breed anymore until the pop drops below 50. Good luck with your kitties.

Pop cap.  Dunno what it is, but they will eventually stop breeding kittens.  Kittens will happen once the pop gets lowered by deaths.  Same with doggies and all those embark animals, they reach a limit in the 4x4, and then stop breeding.  Dunno how that limit is set, or what it is, however.  Some peeps stuff um all in one cage, to lower help offset the hit on FPS.  Try that.  They run nice interference during sieges, so we can get our dorfs all burrowed.  Take care, Knutor

Ah yes, it seems they've stopped breeding, and my FPS is still fine. I'm going to slaughter some of them, since I need bones and skulls for some crazy craftsdwarf. Also made a cat-bomb outside my gates. Since my computer is apparently pretty good, the only problem I have whit cats is that they eat spiders. The small cave variety, to be accurate. In what conditions do these spideys spawn?

Phase spiders spawn in evil areas, outdoors up topside.  Only ones I think that do that.

There sure are lots of fun things to do to cats in DF.

I guess we should be sealing the door into the caverns, so pets don't go in, and kill the spiders.  I always forget to do that.

Aligned regions have specific types of vermin and plants.

Not possitive, don't play evil much, cannot stand the miasma, but I think that a vermin there can kill a cat.  I wanna say, Demon rats.  But not sure.

Naw, I think the worst vermin can do is bite or sting you, and their poison is pretty weak.

I've had cave spiders spawn sometimes in rooms adjoining watery caverns (or underground rivers, in version 40d), separated by only one tile of rock.  It doesn't always happen, but I have had it happen as recently as 34.10 so it does still happen.  The best thing to do is to close off the area and put a locked door on it, so the silk can accumulate before a weaver is allowed to harvest it.  Cats will kill the spiders, but a child will also walk all over webs for no apparent reason (ie, no parent nearby doing anything).  I was rather annoyed with that child.

I would just cage the unneeded ones up for trade later. Also trappers do a good job capturing vermin. Something interesting to look into, peregrine falcons have vermin killer tag, nice to pasture at food stockpiles. Kiwis also are good for vermin/bugs

Yeah, trading would be OK, if it didn't require selling off my precious cages too. In the future, I think I'm going to control the cat population more strictly. Altough, they kinda work like scouts, when they roam the map and spot thieves/ambushes. For now, I'll let them be. My FPS hasn't dropped much yet.

Slaughter all the female cats except one and any new kittens slaughter only female kittens... which will keep them under control.  If the female cat dies simply request more cats at the DEPOT.

Since my computer is apparently pretty good, the only problem ...
More variables are important in knowing how "good" is the computer.
1) What's CPU model and specs?
2) What RAM model and amount of RAM?
3) What size is your embark?  1x1  or  12X12?
4) What mods or personal game hacks are you using? (these can make big differences)

nice to pasture at food stockpiles

This. Pasture your cats to the food stockpiles, they really do not need to be anywhere else. For the most part, I only have one cat roaming; the rest are caged up.
I've also had spiders turn up inside my fortresses, spinning webs and these places were quite a bit away from the caverns.

I wouldn't pasture all cats at the food stockpiles... I probably keep 40% of my cats at the food stockpiles and allow the others to wander because sometimes it's the cat who finds the hidden enemy instead of a dwarf.
