Yes there is a population cap on any one single species of animal, but keep this in mind. If your population of that animal is lower then the cap then every female of the species will become pregnant. As such if the cap was 50 say, and you butcher 1 to take it down to 49, then all 30 females will become pregnant and have a litter. As such it is fully possible to end up with like 150 cats if that happens.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

@Slink and TCG, have you ever manually animal trapped spideys in those areas you mentioned, the areas outside the cavern?  I've only ever had luck traping nonphase spiders with meat traps in caverns.  *shrug* And usually far away from the cavern pools.  Never have had a trap animal /R, get me a spider, lotsa other stuff, hamsters, toads, etc..  But not spiders.  I must be just unlucky.  Does that happen for you?  Do they get ya spiders?  Or just the other vermin?

I get ONLY hamsters and rats when the dwarves chase vermin, and when I place meat traps I get somewthing called cardinals. One spider spawned in my fort, and everyone ignored it until a cat named Syruppainted ate it. I've stopped butchering my cats, instead they die defending my fort as distractions. I constantly have about 20 cats roaming the fort's surroundings, and when invaders come, they get chased down and killed, while I ready my defences and get my woodcutters to safety. By the way, do bobcats hunt vermin as well? They sometimes manage to kill thieves and stuff.

Newb question time: when pasturing/caging cats, is there a way to see the gender?

Garath says that sexless list is opposite the Animal stock list and to count backwards.  I just gave up on breeding.  Another way is to modify the raws, and name the chicks, male peeps or female peeps.  I suck at shark dentistry, so that's about as far a solution as I can offer.  Strongest will survive regardless, I figure.  Evolution.

@Noobazzah, no for bobcats, but I've heard since Toady's new animal changes, that a bird now hunts vermin like cats.  Cannot remember which, I can only afford cats at embark.  And with that Exotics button broken because of these animal training fixes and dungeon master changes, I don't know that we can even get that bird at embark, without a mod.  There is a bird, too.  Man I wish I could remember the name of that for you.  Crap.  Knutor

It's peregrine falcons that hunt vermin.
