Final Fantasy V: Four Job Fiesta
« on: May 31, 2012, 01:02:37 pm »

Hey guys, I'm here with AMAZING INFO about a PRETTY COOL if RATHER DIFFICULT event.

This is an annual event based on Final Fantasy V. Normally, during the course of the game, you get fragments of the elemental crystals(wind, water, fire, earth). When this happens, you get a bunch of new jobs to use - the first one, the wind crystal, gives you a bunch of jobs like white mage, black mage, knight, thief, the kind of basic jobs that're used through most of the series.

The idea of the Four Job Fiesta is that you have a particular job chosen for you at each crystal. You might get unlucky and get white mage for wind crystal, which means you have to play up 'til the next crystal with a party of only white mages. Or you could get lucky and have knight, meaning plain sailing to the next one but a fair disadvantage later on since you have no access to white magic.

I played it last year and found it quite fun, myself, though I guess it won't appeal to anyone.

The website is at http://www.letsplaying.com/FF5FF/

The job selection bot is based on Twitter - you tweet specific hashtags that it recognizes and it responds with a job and LOTS OF CAPITAL LETTERS.

The event begins the 17th of June. Registration starts tomorrow, the 1st.

Any version of FFV is allowed, but the extra jobs added by the GBA remake aren't allowed.

EDIT: On the 15th of June, the creator of the event(RevenantKioku) will begin a streamed marathon run of the challenge. The event will begin at the end of his marathon or midnight(Japan standard time) on the 17th of June, whichever comes first. To that end, you should vote to give him as good a party as possible so he gets it done quicker. Or a terrible one so he fails miserably and everyone can laugh at him.

Bump? From the views, it seems there's at least some interest, but it's hard to tell if this is hidden on page 10 or something.

They're nearly as bad as badgers. Build a couple of anti-buzzard SAM sites marksdwarf towers and your fortress will look like Baghdad in 2003 from all the aerial bolt spam. You waste a lot of ammo and everything is covered in unslightly exploded buzzard bits and broken bolts.

Huh, that could be cool and I think I'll have time to do it, I'll have to see what FFV I have access to (not sure I want to play the PSX version). Were you thinking that if people took part they'd just kind of post periodic status updates and that kind of thing?

The moment the lever was pulled, somebody's pet kitten stepped onto the bridge. I read somewhere that if a cat falls more than 11 stories, it instinctively flares its legs out to increase air resistance. This slows it down enough to stick the landing with relatively minor injuries. In Dwarf Fortress, apparently, cats don't do that.

Good thing this wasn't FF3 or else this challenge would be impossible (since some areas you need certain spells)

I didn't really think that far. My plan was basically "hey, this is a pretty sweet challenge, I'll tell the bay12 guys about it!"

Status updates would be pretty cool, just to see how well people are doing. and to keep the page bumped...

Haha, sounds like a plan. I'll keep this in mind as the date gets closer and try and finish up some of the books/games I've been reading/playing recently so I have less to distract me. :P

I see problems occuring at that one tower where you can only use magic or attack to fight.

There comes a time when you must take off the soft, furry slippers of a boy and put on the shoes of a man.
Unless of course they don't fit properly and your feet blister up like bubble wrap.
Oh ho ho, but don't try to return the shoes, because they won't take them back once you've worn them.
Especially if that fat pig Tony is at the desk.

Ahh, fork tower, my foe!

So wait, can you only play the jobs the most recent crytal gave, or also the job that you rolled with the previous one - eg - you get Thief at the first and Red mage on the second, does it mean you can only play red mage until the next crystal, or does it mean you can swap between red mage and Thief?

You might have already found the answer, but you have to use a combo of all the jobs you've gotten at the crystals. So in your scenario, you'd need one thief, one red mage, and the two others can be whichever of the two you prefer. So after the last crystal, you'll be using one(or more on hard!) of each.

Alrighty. I'd be hoping for a blue mage to help win early game, though getting some of the better Blue magics wou;d be difficult.

Is it a race?

Apart from "congratulations, you finished first" it's not really a race. There's no point in trying to finish it faster than other people.

Bumping (again) to remind everyone it's live, to send their #wind tweets, and start their Fiesta!

Currently got Black Mage, Red Mage, and Zerker. Liquid Flame was a pain, forcing me to break 2 rods.  :'( Hopefully the rest will be a bit better with some physical damage around.
