need inspiration
« on: May 31, 2012, 08:13:53 am »

Title says it all. Recently I have really wanted to start a new fort but have been suffering from abandon syndrome due to changing my mind about set up and design choices.
So, can anyone help with some ideas for theams/story line to base a fort from?
Also, would you guys suggest any mods? I've havent used any before, but Im interested in trying some out.
Cheers

If you're looking for something new and interesting to do there's a page on the wiki called "challenges", you might find something there.  :)

Here is your challenge

- You may start with seven dwarves with whatever professions and provisions you wish.
- You many not alter the professions of the starting seven dwarves, or any migrants, during gameplay
- All trade caravans are evil.  Kill the traders and dispose of their goods in magma, for they are worthless compared to the glorious produce of your fortress.
- All who are elected Mayor while the population exceeds 50 are to be killed on the first of Granite each year to appease Armok.

OP should probably make an exception for architecture, though. Or does starting with architecture->architecture enabled by default?

Well I did state Minority could start with whatever professions they wanted.  And dedicated Architects do turn up in migrant waves.

Don't forget exceptions to the Dwarven caravan, you wouldn't want a civil war on your fort.

OR MAYBE YOU DO

It's not a challenge if it's easy.

I read a thread about this guy who drained the sea to farm sea serpents, and then I thought to myself: what's stopping a person from building their fortress entirely underwater like a supervillain? You have to admit it would be pretty cool, if a little difficult to pull off.

Cavern fort is a classic. Bring no animals. Eat nothing grown on the surface. Make insane amounts of cage traps and collect the spawn of the caverns for your animal trainers to master. The whole fort should start at the first cavern and culminate in the third (with a dip into the magma sea for forges). All your beds should be colorful cavern fungi.

Eat masterwork jabberer and rutherer roasts, train your militia on troglodytes and fleshblobs, die horribly to a godforsaken rot from a skinless sparrow with mandibles.

The worlds largest elven zoo zoo of elven females.
Change your goblin tags to civ_playable  start in a forest close to elves.  Without mods you will have issues with military, but thats not the point, you NEED cage traps LOTS of them.  After a few merchants leave unhappy prepare to be ambushed.  Fill your towers with lots and lots of elves.

Pick some dwarf figures you like.  Take descriptions of interesting dwarves from your world, use fantasy pictures you enjoy, whatever.  Design your fortress into a gigantic, Mount Rushmore-like monument to these dwarves.  Looking good in stonesense isn't enough, it's got to work as a fortress and general living area.  Bonus if you can arrange for the gargantuan stone busts to bite.

It's useful to keep a ‼torch‼ handy.

Repeating drawbridge(s)! NOM

Bonus bonus points if it vomits magma and has a roller coaster going inside the mouth.
