Remember how Matthew guessed "sefol" much too quickly, given that he didn't know that Jake knew Dwarvish? Remember when Matthew resolved to smash the laptop, but fired up DF instead? Remember when "Matthew" got bitten just before Matthew tried to deconstruct the depot? Did you notice that Matthew never actually contributed to the fortress, always getting interrupted? Matthew never had a chance, and his final act wasn't voluntary, just like all his other actions.

So there's an undercurrent of "Which is actually in the real world and which is actually the controller/being controlled"? Or am I over thinking.

I think it's the way towns develop now. In the beginning, people move into a town. Then they start producing tables, which results in more and more tables. Soon tables represent a significant portion of the population, they start lobbying for new laws and regulations, putting people to greater and greater disadvantage...
Link for full quote. 'tis mighty funny.

Nah, mind control is just the game's way of propagating itself.

BTW, my original motivation was the question: What would be the scariest DF-related thing that could happen to you? My answer: Being a dwarf. Next question: What would be even scarier? The obvious answer: Being an infinite number of dwarves. Forever.

Another BTW: If you want some eye candy, look up "Necrosis" on Wikipedia.

Remember those long summers of your childhood? That first kiss in the gardens while crossbows dwarves shoot goblins above your head? The rain of dead birds as the hunters get to work? Truly Spearhills is a paradise.

That's really rather good. You should call it "At the Mountainhome of Madness".

I think Toady's confusing interface better simulates the experience of a bunch of disorganised drunken dwarves running a fort.

The Shadow of Besmarkezat is a classic. I remember reading it a while back, probably when I should have been working or paying attention in class or something.

But others might prefer to have the mess contained behind windows to avoid tracking blood all over the their nice, color coordinated floor patterns. Kind of the Ozzy Osborne vs. Martha Stewart debate.

I just had an excellent idea for a DF creepypasta... Anyone ever heard of David Langford? He's a British SF writer who popularised the concept of mathematically-based informational weapons, explained here. Now, Toady One happens to have a doctorate in Mathematics and a vested interest in keeping the DF source code all to himself... See where I'm going here?

Something has been written like this, in the "If bay forum were a mountain hall, continued..." thread involving the people from boatmurdered.  It was an apocalyptic log engraved by a machine.  In fact, that whole segment had a strange feel to it.

If a DF creepypasta were to be made, it would have to include us going to mars at some point.

Generally, when one is conducting an experiment, it is worth noting that the observers went insane, killed each other, and then rose from the dead.
It's like DF inhaled a peanut.

Against my better judgement, I'll be monitoring this thread. I'm such a wuss, I don't think I'll be playing DF for a while just after those 2 or 3 stories. Still though, that Shadow of Besmarkezat was a damn fine read. It's mostly my imagination that's keeping me jumpy after stuff like that, since there wasn't anything that frightening about the thing. I sometimes wish I could rip out my cowardice and bare-knuckle box it into submission. Without my shirt on, of course.

Clearly, this represents six side-by-side wheelbarrows, as indicated by the right half of the icon.  The left half indicates they are carrying babies with hats in these wheelbarrows.

Presumably, they are lining up to dump them into the baby furnaces.
