An idea - Firing minecarts over the border
« on: May 30, 2012, 08:27:36 am »

Here's a thought which just struck me. I don't know if anyone has tried this already but....

What happens to a minecart that's leaving the map?

I haven't tested it personally (haven't managed to get into building a new fort in .34 yet) but minecarts seem to offer a perfect way of getting objects and dwarves to leave the map, which isn't normally possible for the player to do. You can't build tracks up to the edge of the map of course, but you can build a ramp aimed at the border...

Why is this useful? Well, as I understand it, items on the map, even if destroyed, still contribute to FPS issues. But do items that leave the map do so? I don't think so. So flinging minecarts full of junk off the map could help your FPS. Also, for isolationist forts that don't want migrants, this could provide an automated way of getting rid of them without going to the hassle and mess of killing them (and subsequently having ghosts to deal with). Save the deathtraps for the goblins.

Anyway, just my small thought. Has anyone done !!SCIENCE!! on this?

I have no idea, but you might have better luck if you edit the OP title to actually represent the topic.

Now that you mention, I'm also very interested to know...

The edge of the map is a solid impassable barrier.  The cart makes a hard dead stop.  This has been experimentally (and sometimes explosively) fatal for dwarfs who were unfortunate enough to be riding along.  Neither the cart nor its contents leave the map.

Aw, that's a shame. I guess it's the easiest solution for Toady though, to avoid him having to deal with all of that just yet.

What about units being swept off the map by liquids? I thought that had been done? Or do they just pile up on the border as well?

Then it happened. Then I cringed. Then I picked it up and beat him to death with it, and then his buddies, too.
You beat a man to death with his dick?

They just pile up as well (unless they are invaders, then after enough die they will exit through the map edge). The liquid drains out though.

If you want to get rid of unwanted items, just use a Dwarven Atom Smasher. It gets the job done, nice and clean.

Efficient isn't the same as !FUN!, though. It seemed like a cooler way of dealing with trash/unwanted visitors.

They just pile up as well (unless they are invaders, then after enough die they will exit through the map edge). The liquid drains out though.

This is also true for creatures knocked around by blows; they too will collide with the map edge as if it were a wall
