The Dawn of Dwarves

Introduction

Since the beginning of time no dwarf had left the safety of mountain home. Well, no dwarf except few brave souls who were possessed by the wanderlust. Those few souls became the merchants of dwarves, the only contact others had with dwarves. You see, nobody who wasn't a dwarf was allowed to enter the great halls and thus humans, elves and goblins knew only what the merchants decided to tell them. Sure there were few incidents and even wars when especially goblins tried to invade the mountain homes by force. No such attempt succeeded though.

Our story begins one hundred and two years after the first merchants left the great hall. It was then when the first dwarves who weren't merchants were sent outside to establish a new outpost to spread the influence of dwarven civilization. Now, why would they want to do such thing? The first reason was that the mountain homes had begun to run out of minerals. And without minerals no production of legendary items could take place. Secondly the halls had become too crowded. It was only a matter of time before the great halls could no support the increasing population anymore so some actions had to be taken.

And so in the day of 1st of Granite, year 102, a group of dwarves arrived to their destination. Seven dwarves, guided by the expedition leader Kipi Deepsilvers, reached the stream "The Boil of Pus".

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

There they were supposed to construct a fortress, possibly even the new mountain home, called Ringhammer. They were given enough tools and supplies to ensure the survival for the first year or so and the queen had promised that more migrants would be sent when the news of reaching the site arrives the mountain hall.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

And so begun The Dawn of Dwarves.

About Ringhammer

Ringhammer is community fortress using vanilla 0.34.10. That means no mods of any kind. As for tools I'm using only Dwarf Therapist and DFHack. As for the DFHack I'm only going to use tools which allows me to fix some bugs, like drying buckets.

The fortress has been moved to DF 0.34.11!

As Ringhammer is community fortress it means I'm the one playing the fortress and sharing the events. But if you want to claim a dwarf I need following information:
  • Name. If one is not given I will take the forum name instead.
  • Gender. No mandatory.
  • Profession. If you want specific profession enabled then this is mandatory. Of course I reserve the right to enable additional professions if I see fit (usually all smiths have every forging jobs enabled).
  • Short description. This is needed for the story mostly, it makes it easier to include claimed dwarves to the story when I know how they should behave

Make a note that there might be few dwarves who can not be claimed. Good example is the expedition leader, who is claimed by me. I believe there will be only few of such dwarves and it's only for the story purpose.

Also note that all the personalities listed by the game itself will be overruled by the description given when requested if there is contradiction.

After you have claimed a dwarf you can also make small requests and I will see if and when I can fulfill those requests. For example you request specific type of weapon for soldier or so on. No promises though.

Finally, I'm not going to use the method of crashing the game and then loading a previous safe unless one of the following conditions are met: The fortress is doomed (only one dwarf left who is almost dead already) or I accidentally breach the circus. As long as the fortress has possibility to survive I will keep on playing.

Dorf me as Nix please.  I don't care about gender.  Profession can be axedwarf.  If you don't want to make one in the starting seven, just train up any mook from scratch.  It doesn't matter if the dwarf has previous skill or not.

Another Kipi community game, this oughta be interesting.  And by interesting, I mean ABSOLUTE WIN.

Here you go! From starting seven.

You have some skills in farming, cooking, brewing, butchering and tanning.

You should know by now that I almost always prefer axes and crossbows in military ;)

But here is you dwarf.

Spoiler: Nix Manorspatters (click to show/hide)

You have skills in axes, armor using, shield using, fighting and dodging. You also have very good disease resistance which should help against infections and FB blood. Your equipment are made from iron, as you can take from the equipment list I posted in first post.

And thanks for the praises, let's see how this fortress turns out...

From the diary of Kipi Deepsilvers

1st of Granite, 102 S.B.S.

So, we have finally reached The Boil of Pus. And I'm talking about the stream so you can forget all the filthy images running in your head immediately.

Honestly I don't understand why our queen suddenly wanted to send a group outside just to build a new fortress. Why couldn't they just expand the old quarters if they were so afraid of running out of space? Why in the name of Armok did she want to break the tradition that has lasted since the beginning of time? Wasn't it bad enough when her father decided to let few of our citizens to become merchants and leave the mountain home? And what did we get from that? Some stupid ideas that perhaps we should build a new fortress! Oh, and yeah, few goblin sieges as well. But nothing else! At least nothing that benefited our society.

It has been one hundred and two years since the first merchants left the mountain home. One hundred and two years of the new era. One hundred and two years Since Big Sacrilege. Yeah, some of us are still using the letters S.B.S. after the number indicating the year. Or B.B.S. if the year is before the beginning of the new era. All of this is not official though.

So, now that we are here I think we should do something? What that something is I honestly don't know and in fact couldn't care less. I still believe that if we fail we can just return to our home and our queen forgets this nonsense. But before our queen gives us the permission to return we must act like we were obeying her.

So, our first task is to get underground. Thank god we have two miners with us, I'm already hating the sun and fresh air I'm forced to breathe. Where is the smog? Where is the miasma? No dwarven lung should be forced to deal with clear air like this. I honestly don't know how those merchants can tolerate this. But that's their problem so I'm not going to bother myself with that anymore.

So, our miners are going to mine down, what else? Oh yes, perhaps our carpenter should cut down some trees? We can always use those to make beds and bins, perhaps even make some charcoal to power our furnaces. So lets get working, I want some solid rock over my head already!

5th of Granite, 102 S.B.S.

So, we have two floors worth of soil between the surface and solid rock. That's more than enough, we only need soil for farming.

The more interesting thing is that our miners discovered two veins of iron almost immediately they reach the solid rock. Besides the iron there was three clusters of gem already visible. Now we only need some coal or magma.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

15th of Granite, 102 S.B.S.

I don't get it. Now that our miners are carving out the place for farms in the lower soil layer we have noticed that there are some fungus growing already. Doesn't that usually means that there is some kind of breach to caverns? But so far I have seen no such breach. This is strange but on the other hand it confirms that we have cavern bellow us. Interesting...

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

12th of Felsite, 102 S.B.S.

The farming area is finally ready, including all necessary workshops to keep our food supplies high. And a stockpile for food and alcohol of course. For some reason our farmer Blue demanded two farms instead of one. When I asked her why in earth would we need two farms she just said that one is for plump helmets and one is for pig tails. Does she really think that we are staying here so long that clothing becomes an issue?

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The fungus is becoming a problem already. It's spreading everywhere. Well, luckily we don't need that much soil space so I think we can contaminate the problem. And we could always make a pasture inside the fortress if there is enough fungus around...

17th of Hematite, 102 S.B.S.

After studying the traditions of how to build a fortress I have noticed the trend of fortresses spanning out horizontally. Well, I don't like that so instead we are going to go more vertically. The first step is to carve out the floor where all the stockpiles will come.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Starting from northwest we have trading goods stockpile, furniture stockpile, ammo stockpile, cage stockpile, weapon stockpile and armor stockpile. In southern side of the hall we shall have, starting again from west, leather stockpile, cloth stockpile, stone stockpile, wood stockpile and gem stockpile. Those should be enough for now, it already takes damned long from our miners to carve out.

Oh, and the coal problem has already been solved as there are veins of bituminous coal around the first floor. That's very good thing.

24th of Hematite, 102 S.B.S.

Just like our queen promised we received our first group of migrants today. Three dwarves and a chick. While I'm happy that we have more workers down here this really interferes my plans of getting out of here. More workers means better chances of succeeding. On the other hand, one of the migrants brought me a letter from the queen. In the letter she clearly states that this is our home now and we either succeed or die trying. I'm sure she doesn't mean that, I just need to be patient and wait until she realizes the mistake and requests us to come back.

So, about the three migrants. One of them is dyer, one is trader and one is some kind of animal handler and leather worker. Well, the animal handler shall help out Blue in farms, two others may as well become our crafters. We need someone to make some crude toys and crafts for trading as well as pots where we can keep all our food and alcohol.

7th of Malachite, 102 S.B.S.

While waiting for the storage floor getting ready I ordered a depot to be built outside. Yes, I know that we should build it inside, but the damned wagons won't have access to it then. I think we just need to build some kind of roof above it. We also have small refuse stockpile set up next to the depot so that we don't have to look at the rotting vermin corpses inside the fortress. Let me tell you, bring two cats was mistake. A big mistake. Those are hunting down vermins faster than we can remove outside.

22nd of Malachite, 102 S.B.S.

I ordered the first workshops to be constructed. It means that we finally have some kind of masonry, two crafting places and carpentry working. Also the first stockpile, reserved for trading goods, is finally finished. I don't even want to think how long it will take from our miners to finish up with all the storage rooms...

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

6th of Galena, 102 S.B.S.

Furniture stockpile is finally ready. With the speed like this it will take two to four months before all the remaining stockpiles are ready. And that's too slow for my taste. I think I have to remind our miners again what will happen to them if they don't work faster.

11th of Limestone, 102 S.B.S.

It's autumn already and our miners are still working on storage areas. I think I have to go down there once more and show the bloody whip I happened to find nearby, probably left behind by goblins. And no, we haven't seen one yet, the whip I wound was somewhat ancient and rusty. But it still inflicts enough pain when used to the backs of lazy workers.

Speaking of miners, so far we have storage rooms for trading goods, furniture, leather and cloth. The progression isn't what I like or hoped for.

19th of Limestone, 102 S.B.S.

We received another group of migrants today. Four dwarves and no pets came this time. Two fishers, one animal handler who also knows few tricks about cleaning wounds and one strand extractor. In other words, nothing interesting. Well, I think we should build a fishery or two now so that the skills of the two dwarves doesn't get wasted.

13th of Timber, 102 S.B.S.

Good thing we built that depot few months ago. A caravan from mountain home arrived this morning.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

With the caravan also came the liaison, a dwarf who has never took a step outside the comfort and safety of great halls.

So, first I met the merchants. Apparently they are the descendants of the very first group of merchants that left the mountain home over one hundred and two years ago. As we are the very first outpost outside the mountains they made me an offer; for all our rock crafts they are willing to give all the booze they have, metal bars, bronze battle axe and bronze war hammer. I think that's a good deal, war hammer will be reserved for the future hammerer and axe is for the poor soul who becomes our second carpenter.

After the trading was done I met the liaison.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The fat lady was unimpressed by our progress, which isn't a surprise. After all we don't have even basic dining hall ready yet! She demanded to see our miners and cave them a lecture of year. I think those bruises are going to last months.

When we actually got down to business I realized she didn't actually bring any important messages or orders from queen. She was here just to learn our situation. A task she kept complaining about all the time she was here. Good thing she has already far away. If the nobles in mountain home are now even close like her I don't think I want to return. Complaining and not actually doing anything important. Even if I complain all the time I at least try to do something about it! Oh well, back to the planning. I hope we get stockpiles ready before the year comes to an end.

20th of Timber, 102 S.B.S.

I decided to make Baran, the migrant with a bit of knowledge about treating wounds, to our chief doctor. I'm not expecting any kind of brain surgery from him but at least I can point someone when somebody complains about wounds or scratches.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Of course we don't have any kind of hospital yet but that's something which will be solved later.

27th of Timber, 102 S.B.S.

Curse it! A kobold was spotted near the stairs!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Unfortunately, even though she was standing right next to the filthy bugger, Nix was unable to to catch it and it was able to escape.

When we get more migrants we must definitely start constructing some kind of shelter around the entrance. Right now it's too open for thieves.

1st of Moonstone, 102 S.B.S.

Another filthy bugger was spotted near our entrance.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Again the thief was able to escape. I'm kind of expecting third one any moment now.

6th of Obsidian, 102 S.B.S.

Finally all the storage rooms are ready! It took what, ten months? Originally the plan was to move on the workshop floor next but I think we shall skip that and move directly to basic facilities. And with those I mean dining hall, my office and a place where we can sleep. After those we can focus on workshops.

Why this change of plan? The reason is that I have heard few complains already, especially about missing beds. And if I want to get out of here alive I need to keep my workers content enough so that they won't mob me down.

28th of Obsidian, 102 S.B.S.

The first year is coming to an end. One year I have been living in this dump. And what have we achieved? We have farms running and storage rooms for almost everything. Besides that? Well, I have my quarters ready and the public dining hall is under construction as well as dormitory which will serve as hospital as well.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

We have fourteen dwarves living down here and five animals. Our food supplies are good so there should be no worries about starvation or dehydration. Otherwise, well, we haven't been too productive yet. I hope this will change soon enough.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

What about my personal plans? It seems like the queen is still holding on with the attitude of "You live there and you die there!". But Armok hear my words, one day I will leave this hole we should be calling home and return to mountain home. Even our queen can't prevent that! I just need to find a way to do so without risking my precious beard.
