I find it funny how the "very skinny" Mason gets paired up with the "corpulent" Miner. This can only go well.

20th of Granite, year 103

Another group of migrants arrived. Twenty-six dwarves in total, taking our population up to forty dwarves. There were dwarves from nearly all fields of professions so I think some of them should find proper job here. Everybody else, well, we always need some haulers.

So, after going through all the migrants I found dwarves for following jobs:
  • One miner
  • One doctor
  • One carpenter
  • One smith
  • One mason

Those were the dwarves who had skills in their respective fields. Besides those I appointed five random dwarves to work as masons, just to speed up the construction of walls around the entrance, and five dwarves to work as farmers. Rest of the migrants will act as haulers for now.

10th of Slate, 103 S.B.S.

One of our citizens has turned strange lately. She has been heard babbling something about gods and fate. Some even claim she is possessed!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I don't know what it is but today she snapped completely. She just halted, canceled whatever she was doing at the moment, ran to one of our crafting workshops and claimed it for herself.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Right after she claimed the workshop she begun collecting raw materials. But she was never able to finish the collecting as she noticed that we have no cut gems, only rough ones. And now she is demanding some. We have no jewelers around here but if I pick one random dwarf and temporarily make him of her one then perhaps we can fulfill this demand? Well, we will see it sooner or later.

18th of Slate, 103 S.B.S.

The plan worked! Even a gem with lowest quality of cutting was sufficient to fulfill the demands of the "possessed" dwarf. Now we must wait to see what she is producing.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

In fact, the plan was working so well that I think I will make the temporal jeweler position permanent.

22nd of Slate, 103 S.B.S.

The possessed dwarf has finally come out from the workshop. She was carrying a crown made from cedar.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Seriously? A wooden crown decorated with wood and one gem? Where are the detailed pictures this kind of artifacts usually contain? Where are the menacing spikes?

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

This artifact is lame in every sense of the word. And I bet that the creator won't allow me to trade it away. So seriously, what the hell am I going to do with a crap like this?

One other news our masons are producing blocks so that they can construct a proper wall outside. Otherwise everything is going as usual.

15th of Felsite, 103 S.B.S.

Something happened today that I still can't understand; a group of elven merchants arrived our fortress.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I don't know how they knew where we are as no information was sent to those pointy-ear hippies about this experiment, mostly because we have different opinions regarding trees and cutting those down.

Now, we don't usually deal with elves but I decided that perhaps we should see what they have to offer. Well, their supplies were almost worthless; no wood, only few barrels of alcohol, few empty cages and some splints and crutches. It was actually so bad that I decided to just take all those things I wanted and not to pay anything.

Of course elves were very unhappy about the situation but when I mentioned Nix and her axe they decided to just collect their stuff and leave. I also mentioned that if they want to do real trading they should bring more valuable goods next time, otherwise I will just claim what I want again.

19th of Felsite, 103 S.B.S.

I just received the report that dining hall, dormitory and my office are ready.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Since I'm the undisputed ruler of this place I took the liberty of getting personal dining room and bedroom as well. The public dormitory will also act as hospital for now.

Next step is to have the floor for workshops ready. At the same time our masons will start constructing the wall outside. I have seen several plans about it already but details are still somewhat obscure.

2nd of Malachite, 103 S.B.S.

Thanks to the recruited masons we finally have walls around the entrance.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The only route outside is the narrow passage at the northern section of the wall. A passage which has bridges at both ends which are linked to two levers inside the dining hall. These levers makes it possible to seal the fortress and, when we have constructed them, safe reloading of the traps even during a siege.

Now, the only problem is that I was just informed that if we want merchants with wagons we can't build traps inside the passage. That means we must find alternative way to let those wagons inside without risking the safety of our fortress.

20th of Malachite, 103 S.B.S.

The wagon problem has been solved, thanks to Unum and his cunning plan.

The solution was to build another passage next to the main one. Inside that passage is also the depot.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

What makes this so cunning? You see, both ends of the passage are blocked by bridges. Now, if there is no merchants in the depot we can keep the outer bridge lowered while the blocking the passage inside by raising the inner bridge. When the merchants have reached the depot we just raise the outer bridge and lower the inner bridge and suddenly we have direct access to the depot without stepping outside the walled area.

I think Unum almost deserves a medal from this innovation. Yes, I said almost, not going give him one.

21st of Malachite, 103 S.B.S.

The strand extractor that came to my fortress last autumn has made the second artifact of the fortress. Strange thing is, I didn't know she was even making one!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The artifact is ring made from magnetite, decorated with magnetite, dog bones and bituminous coal.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Now, I don't mind the usage of bones but seriously, why did she have to use precious iron ore for such project? We had plenty of other stone types around, why did she have to pick magnetite? And even three times? At least she proved that she can do something else than extract strands as well. And thus she became our third crafter.

The Journal of Unum Truthfulstaves

Ye gods, this fortress is getting crowded. I knew the Mountainhomes were crowded, but not this crowded. A wave of twenty-six dwarves? How can the delusional queen believe that this fortress (or more accurately, hole in the ground) believe that we can hold so many people? Bloody migrants. At least a decent number of them are out there helping me with my brilliant plans for the walls and the bridges. Kipi, you're going to owe me one on that for a long time.

Also, all these new "crafters" are a bunch of talentless hacks. So you can slap together some wood and make a crown. Nice job! Or you took some valuable resources (the ones that we were sent here to get, no less) and some of the bones lying around and made some shoddy ring. Absolutely astounding! And what use do these things have? Absolutely none at all! Anything and everything I've made is infinitely more valuable for this fortress than whatever garbage they put together on a whim. Also, I think I'm going to ask Kipi to start a new project - building new statues around the fortress. I want to do some actual art for once (building walls is fine and good, but statues are infinitely better to look at) and it'll make this fortress so much less of a hole in the ground.

Spoiler: MS Paint Baran (click to show/hide)

A note by Baran Whipsabres, chief medical dwarf

Ringhammer, 20th of Granite, year 103 SGO*
Once again, I have no idea where I put my journal, so this bit of parchment will have to do. I've been putting this off for too long.
The first big wave of immigrants is here. The queen will be thrilled to hear that they made it here safely. Gasis be praised! The fort is not at all as impressive as I had hoped for. The digging is really slow. I guess we aren't very good at making new places to live, and Ringhammer is a new fortress. (I like that name, sounds like metalworking.) The queen was smart to send us all here to help. All hands will be needed, and I'm really excited to do my thing. Well, actually not, since I don't want anyone to get hurt. I hope that doesn't happen, at least any time soon.

But back to the fort. The rock level is going to be dug for stockpiling, the way I see it. Tiki Deepsilvers (the exp. leader) wants it done like that for some reason. I guess he wants to make his mark. He's a decent enough person. Thank the gods he likes to talk sense. I'm a bit worried about that whip of his - those marks might be the first thing I'll have to patch up. But I guess that's just the way it must be, if we really want to make a Mountainhome to last for centuries, if not millenia.

But right now I'm a bit miffed about the lack of dining rooms and bedrooms. I guess I'll need to talk to Kipi about this...
Oh yeah, the microcline Depot is pretty nice.

25th of Malachite, 103 S.B.S.

Another group of migrants arrived today. This time there were eleven dwarves, taking our population up to Fifty-three dwarves. That number also contains the few babies that have been born during last few months.

Most of the migrants were farmers or random industry workers. In fact there were only two notable dwarves, a doctor and smith. I really think we should get our first forges and furnaces up and running soon.

28th of Malachite, 103 S.B.S.

Our miners have completed the crude barracks near the dining hall. So far the only dwarf who is going to need it is Nix, but when we get our metal industry running we should start producing weapons and armors and recruit more soldiers.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

10th of Galena, 103 S.B.S.

I was ordering our masons to start constructing the traps in main entry when I noticed something strange; we have only twenty-six giant copper axe blades!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The problem is, I'm completely certain that we had twenty-seven of those when we arrived here. So the big question is, where is one axe blade? Who has stolen it? None of the kobold thieves has been able to reach our stocks as far as we know so none should be missing. I think we need to recruit a sheriff who can do the investigations. In the mean while we must get by with less traps.

13th of Galena, 103 S.B.S.

Human caravan arrived today. It was also the first opportunity to test out the locking system of made by Unum.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Well, as expected, the system worked well. I never took a step outside nor did any of our haulers who took the trading goods to depot.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I traded all our stone crafts for few metal bars, alcohol, wool cloth, anvils and food. Fair trade in my opinion.

7th of Limestone, 103 S.B.S.

I'm starting to realize that we are going to stay here at least a bit longer, so it seems that Blue's concern about clothing was right. So, to prevent any kind of morale drop I decided to draft three plant processors, three weavers and three clothiers to keep us in clothing. We already have proper stockpiles so we only needed the workshops. And thus the new industry in Ringhammer has started today.

18th of Limestone, 103 S.B.S.

Another group of migrants arrived today.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Eleven dwarves and none of them possessed any useful skills. I decided to make them haulers for now and decide their fate later.

When I asked one of the migrants why they left the mountain home and traveled here she didn't reply but instead gave me an pamphlet she had brought with her. In the pamphlet there was a following text:

"Attention!

Do you want to experience something new? Is the life in mountain home getting dull and boring? Do you want to become something more than just ordinary citizen?

If you answered yes to any of the previous question then your opportunity has come! The new dawn of dwarves has come and we are seeking brave souls to take part in that dawn. Do you want to see the future today? Then join the groups of migrants heading to Ringhammer, the future of dwarven society!

Before applying please note that this offer is for the life and thus there is no room to regrets. But if you think you are ready then you may just be what we are looking for!

More information can be obtained from your local magistrate"

What the hell?! Ringhammer is considered as future of dwarves? Is the queen mad?! This place can hardly be considered as proper fortress, there is no way this place can become anything important!

And this talk about no regrets is disturbing! Does it really mean there is no way to get back to mountain home? This doesn't bode well for my plans! I must send a letter to her royal bitchness about this! In the meanwhile I must try to keep all these lazy bastards happy. Why in the hell did I accept this position in the first place? Oh yeah, I wasn't given any option. Damn it!

9th of Sandstone, 103 S.B.S.

Our clothing industry is fully operation. I decided to go with tunics, trousers and shoes for everybody. We also have our metal industry going, though currently our smelters are producing mostly coal. But soon we should be able to start producing iron and copper items as well.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Unfortunately we have only two smiths so there was no point in building more than two forges. But whenever we get more smiths, or end up training some of our lazy haulers for the profession, I shall order the construction of more of those.

So currently we have eight furnace operators and two smiths. That's a good start.

7th of Sandstone, 103 S.B.S.

Now that we have enough coal I ordered the smelting ore iron ores to begin. And with iron we should soon have more weapons and armor for our soldiers, we can't really expect Nix to defend this place all alone.

12th of Sandstone, 103 S.B.S.

I decided to give our masons another project; they must build second floor above the ground level, where we shall store some ammo and cages. ANd after the floor is done they will build a roof over it to protect this place against anything that can fly

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

While our masons are busy with the project our miners are mining deeper to see what they can find. Perhaps they could discover new metal ore veins? Or perhaps the cavern I suspect is somewhere bellow us?

14th of Sandstone, 103 S.B.S.

Just like I suspected, there is a cavern right bellow us. And today our miners finally discovered it.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

We saw no dry land down there but instead there were several veins of coal, iron as well as gold and tetrahedrite.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

This place is showing some potential I didn't expect to find here. Perhaps this place could be useful for our civilization, though I still can't understand how this place could be considered as the future of dwarves.

18th of Sandstone, 103 S.B.S.

Because heading straight down in the cavern would cause some unwanted flooding I decided that we must reroute our stairs down a bit. This means our masons must build some floors and missing stairs so that we can access better spot for going down.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Our miners also spotted a section of dry land southeast from the stairs. Perhaps we should concentrate our mining operations there? That place should also offer us some underground trees.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

But before we actually connect our fortress to the cavern we must expand our military a bit, there is no telling what lives down there.

19th of Sandstone, 103 S.B.S.

The plans for rerouting our way down has been made.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The new route requires some mining and constructing of floors and walls but it should give us access to the dry section of the cavern eventualy. All other construction projects has been abandoned until the tunnel connecting the two stairs is ready.

28th of Sandstone, 103 S.B.S.

Our carpenters don't have anymore wood to use so I ordered them to go outside and cut down a small section.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I know it's a bit risky to send them out but on the other hand there has been no signs of kobold or goblins lately and so far our fishers have survived without any problems. Of course I told Nix to stay alert in case someone spots anything that may put our citizens in danger, though I hope no such thing happens.

We also have enough iron bars to start producing weapons and armors. I think nine sets would be enough, after recruiting nine dwarves to train and fight under the command of Nix we have one full squad of axe wielders. Enough so that we may explore the cavern a bit.

6th of Timber, 103 S.B.S.

There is no more bituminous coal to make coke.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

That's okay, there should be enough veins around the cavern which are only waiting to be mined. And currently we have more than two hundred bars of coke, which should last for a moment.

10th of Timber, 103 S.B.S.

The connection tunnel is ready.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

While we are waiting for the full squad to be formed I decided to give our miners another task; mine out some personal bedrooms for our dwarves. Not for everybody though, only for important people. I have also heard complains that some of our dwarves are demanding personal dining rooms as well but those requests are quite absurd at this point. Only bedrooms and only for important dwarves for now.

14th of Timber, 103 S.B.S.

I heard news that a caravan and the liaison from mountain home are coming.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

They should be here in a day or two so I ordered everybody to get ready and look sharp.

21st of Timber, 103 S.B.S.

So, our crafters have been slacking lately. It actually took me few days before I faced the merchants to find out exactly why we didn't have anything to trade? Well, we had few spare crafts so I was able to buy some metal bars but nothing else. I ordered that next six months our crafters shall do double shifts, I can't allow this to happen again!

After I was finished with the merchants and the lazy crafters I met the liaison. She was quite surprised by our progress. Really? I haven't noticed much progress. Perhaps I just have become blind on such things because I'm living here? It took few hours from the liaison to actually explain me what she meant by the progression and I think I understand now what she means. After all we have metal industry working, we have clothing industry, we have somewhat proper defense system here and so on. And our population is much bigger than year ago.

Finally, she also brought me a letter from the queen. I'm actually a bit surprised that her majesty decided to write me personally. In the letter she clearly stated that under no condition I can return as this place needs me more than mountain home does. Apparently, even though I don't remember it, I have also signed a contract that forbids me leaving this place. Even more, if I ever suggest this kind of thing again she may consider it a treason against our civilization and I shall then be removed from my position and live as a common worker here in Ringhammer.

Great! Just great! So apparently I can't return my previous home if I decide to leave here. What other options do I have? Staying here? That's not an option for me. Perhaps some other mountain home accepts me as migrant? But how could I contact them? I can't leave here and using normal methods of contacting is out of question. I think I need to consider my options a bit longer...

3rd of Moonstone, 103 S.B.S.

The first set of sleeping quarters are ready. Eighteen rooms in total

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

First I assigned rooms for Nix, Unum, Baran and Blue, then our doctors and smiths, then our crafters. After they and their families had a room assigned I just went down the list of citizens in order of arrival and assigned the rooms until there was no spare ones left. After it was done I noticed that about half of our fortress had a bedroom, mostly because each couple shares the bedroom. No more bedrooms are going to be made though as we need all the wood for more important things than beds, like bins and cages.

9th of Moonstone, 103 S.B.S.

It will take ages from our two smiths to produce all the necessary weapons and armors so I decided to draft four random peasants to work as smiths. I know they have no experience in the profession but I believe they will learn while working. I would rather have those equipment ready sooner than later.

23rd of Moonstone, 103 S.B.S.

A goblin was spotted near our fortress!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Fortunately our traps were efficient enough and now the filthy bugger sits inside a small wooden cage. I don't know what we should do to it so I ordered the cage to be tossed inside the animal storage. Perhaps we should build an arena where our soldiers may kill all the trapped enemies?

18th of Opal, 103 S.B.S.

Finally all the equipmen for our military has been completed and nine dwarves has been recruited. Unfortunately we didn't have enough male haulers available so I had to draft three female dwarves to the military as well. Hopefully none of them is or gets pregnant.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Now it time to connect our fortress to the cavern and do some exploration. I already told Nix to gather her squad at the bottom of the second stairs and to be ready when our miners arrive.

7th of Obsidian, 103 S.B.S.

Our soldiers have returned from the cavern. The reports indicate that the dry section was actually bigger than I thought, through the easter side of the cavern. Part of it is still unreachable unless we do some digging but that's not our biggest concern right now. I ordered three soldiers to be stationed at the breaching point at all time, rest of the soldiers are free to do whatever they want.

8th of Obsidian, 103 S.B.S.

I ordered our miners to go deeper and what did they found? Another cavern!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

This time there is no dry land visible so, with the help of our masons, miners will just try to get past the underground sea and go deeper.

At this point someone might be wondering why I want to go deeper and deeper? Truth to be told, I'm expecting to find a magma sea down there. Magma would be crucial to keep our forges running so finding it is one of the most important things to do right now.

The Journal of Unum Truthfulstaves

Argh, I hate working in that damned cavern so much. That place absolutely gives me the spooks, I swear some creature of the deeps is going to show up sooner or later and attack our fortress. I don't even think that we've properly walled off a section of the cavern! Still, at least I get to do some work above ground, which isn't so bad. It's pretty relaxing, actually. Also relaxing - actually getting to have a proper private bedroom. Now I can eh... properly spend time with my dearest love, Sazir, without the damned voyeurs looking on. Don't those migrants know their place?

Also, I am still disappointed at the lack of beautification in this fortress. Where are the artful engravings? The statues lining the hallways! I've said it once, I've said it a thousand times, this place is a hole in the ground. I'm going to go see Kipi in the office and ask him about letting me just make a few statues for the dining hall to make that place a bit nicer, and maybe about getting some of those useless migrants to do smoothing and engraving. I'm sure there are plenty of them sitting around and doing no real jobs.

Another note by Baran Whipsabres, chief medical dwarf

Ringhammer, 3rd of Moonstone, 103 SGO

Finally, a private bedroom for me and Feb! I'm overjoyed! Ringhammer has been progressing with giant strides these few months. I won't have to worry about losing my notes from now on, since I can just pile them up in the room. I remember writing several notes about the progress of the fort, but I'll be damned if I remember where I've put them! I feel that someone must be playing a sick joke on me.

Anyway, the progress has been great. We're making clothes now, as well as weapons and armor. I guess Nix (that poor sob) won't have to be the only defender of Ringhammer. Kipi recently recruited more fighters. Three out of the nine were female, which I stronly objected to. As chief medical dwarf, I'm worried about the possible babies - we must not endanger our young. But Kipi does as he pleases, since he is the exp. leader appointed by the queen. I'm still a bit worried about our defences, however. When I was younger, I studied the history of our kingdom from the engravings in the older parts of the Mountainhome. I distinctly recall the scenes of massive sieges: the sieges were more often repelled by ingenious traps than by military force. The goblins and kobolds know we're here. I'll have to talk to Kipi about this one of these days, if I can catch him.

Oh yes, we've also discovered a great underground cavern! Who would've guessed that the earth hides such beautiful places under its hideous, sun-scorched surface? I like the way the giant mushrooms and other fungi light up those majestic vaults with their soft glow, easy on the eyes. Sadly, Kipi had them sealed by the masons, so I only caught a quick glimpse. I'll have to ask one of the engravers to engrave the scene on my wall one of these days.

10th of Moonstone, 103 S.B.S.

I met Unum today. He had several topics he wanted to discuss with me, mostly related to his work. First of all he hasn't been too happy to work inside the caverns. He is certain that there is something down there that will kill us all. Instead he would like to work outside. Well, if he fears the cavern the wound't it be better that we get everything ready there as soon as possible? Until I say so the caverns are our top priority, everything else can wait.

Secondly he complained about the lack of decorations. Engravings and statues are something he wants, even better if he gets work with those himself. As I said above the caverns are our top priority, after which we must finish the project outside. Then it's time to think about decorations. Nevertheless I promised him that he will get a chance to make statues at some point.

I also received a note from our chief doctor Baran. First of he made it clear that he objects the decision to recruit female dwarves to military. Well, if Baran is so damn concerned about it then perhaps he wants to join the army himself? And for the second thing, about inproper defenses and only relying in military, I think he is getting something wrong. We are not relying only to military, after all we have the bridge system made as well as traps in the main entrance.

He was also a bit sad that he didn't see the cavern before I sealed it up. Well, if he is so damned curious then he can just go down there and take a tour! We have guarded entry to the first cavern, I never completely sealed it.

20th of Obsidian, 103 S.B.S.

Today our fortress faced the first real challenge; a goblin ambush squad!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The squad was spotted by two or our doctors, Baran and his assistant. Unfortunately neither one decided to try to run inside, instead both of them begun to flee away from the fortress.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Even worse they the chase took the two doctors and the goblins straight to our fisherdwarves who were returning from their last trip.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

At this point the order was given to our soldiers to rush outside and help the poor citizens. In the meanwhile everybody else were ordered to stay inside the meeting hall until further instruction were given.

Instead of fleeing Baran decided to give the others outside some time to escape and our military to reach the scene. So, he turned his face to the goblins and begun fighting. Unfortunately the goblins were too much to him and he was struck down.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Three of the goblins continued the chase while two were assaulted our first soldiers who already had reached the site.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The fight was brutal and third goblin decided to help its comrades. All three goblins were slaughtered by our soldiers, leaving only two goblins to chase down.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Nix made the decision to charge towards the goblin who was harrasing the other doctor. I say it was good decision since fisherdwarves aren't that important but we just can't accept the loss of two able doctors in the same incident. Unfortunately the goblin managed to kill the doctor before our soldiers reached them. Enraged by the death of fellow dwarves our soldiers killed the filthy goblin without mercy.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

After avenging the death of our doctor the soldiers charged towards the last remaining goblin. The battle was over as soon as it had begun and thus all the goblins were dead. But the loss we suffered was bad, very bad. We lost two doctors, one of them being Baran our chief doctor. Neither of the fisherdwarves were injured nor any of our soldiers. I ordered the squad to station just outside the entrance to make sure that our haulers could get everything inside, including the corpses.

Now that the battle is over there was few decisions I had to make. First of all I decided to reassign the fisherdwarves to haulers. We can't allow anybody to venture outside the walls anymore, it's just not safe enough. Secondly I assigned one of the remaining doctors to be our chief medical dwarf, replacing the dead Baran. Thirdly I ordered the construction of coffins and slabs as well as digging of graveyard. We need to bury these two dwarves soon, otherwise our moral here will suffer even more. I also allowed everybody to leave the dining hall again.

This was a sad day in our history and I fear these two were just the first dead dwarves we will have here.

You know, they could teach maths like this at school. "There are 105 dwarves in a settlement. A goblin invasion appears and 67 die. Then a migrant wave..."

So, our first real clash against invaders is over. Two dead dwarves, including Baran, against several dead goblins.

Vodrilus, if you want to claim another dwarf just say so. I will mark Baran as deceased in the first post as well as add Bastus in the list.

Next update should be longer, I decided to post a shorter update now since the next update will start in year 104.

So sad. ::)

But I can't help but be highly amused by the irony of Baran's demise right after he complained about the defences. Also, dying under the glare of that wicked, fiery orb... Perhaps he should be buried in the caverns?

I'd prefer not to be dwarfed at the moment, since I'll be without time or acces to the 'Net for about two weeks. Naturally, that would hamper my participation in this community effort. Let's see after that (if the fort hasn't died of kitten rot or some other unpredictable calamity).

Thanks for so far!
