The Vault - Main

The Vault

Intro
After the Incident, which originated with a careless mage creating a perpetual power-eating spell, the various kingdoms and countries of the world made sure to prepare Vaults in the event of a catastrophe. They were simply sealed underground rooms equipped with anti-spell doors and walls at least three meters thick, batteries of power stored away to regulate temperature, humidity, and provide life, and simple facilities for rest, production, and research.

Inevitably, another disaster has struck. This time, it was caused by an overabundance of power, unlike the Incident, which was characterized by the lack of it. Plumes of magic appeared from tiny seams in the fabric of the world, which served to separate the seams more, which brought forward more otherworldly magic. In a positive feedback cycle much much wild power appeared in the world, which attracted strange creatures and warped many existing ones into more powerful, feral and tougher versions.

Needless to say, the world collapsed.

You and the others grouped together in the confusion and chaos. Some of you knew where a Vault was, and led the others on the dangerous path there. Though you lost three forths on the way, at least you made it here. The entrance to Vault E — made of metal and ceramic checkered and about ten meters tall, ten meters high, and square — looms before you. Far off, the thick, boiling clouds crackle as thunder and lightning ripple through them, while the surrounding hills are sparse and covered in hardy brown grass. There is a minor river about a kilometer away.

The sights

Jurith approaches the lever set into one side of Vault E's doors. Remembering the short code his father told him, he raises or lowers the levers accordingly and waits until the system detects them. With a heavy clunk and a low grinding of machinery, the doors slide to either side, ponderously and solidly. Inside is dark, at least until a dim set of red lights embedded into either side of the opening flicker on. The passageway leads into the main complex of the Vault. Landren, Tricton, Albri, Jurith, Sil, Olson, Achadias, and a number of other people cautiously head in. Jurith remembers that he has to pull another lever to seal the Vault again from the wild magic and creatures outside. There is supposed to be a small airlock somewhere, but he doesn't know where it is.

Though each Vault is said to be different, this particular one is built into the side of a mountain. This means that most of it is on the same level as the entrance hall. The main hall leading from the large double doors ends in a round room, lavishly decorated yet sparsely furnitured (which probably is not a word). There is a sort of carpet made of woven fiber and square covering most of the room. The high dome of it terminates in a set of extinguished chandeliers. Four pillars stand equidistant from the center of the room and from each other.

Other, narrower halls lead perpendicular to the main hall. They lead to various closed doors and smaller passageways. Meanwhile, there is a small flight of stairs leading down to the second floor in the middle of the hall.

All of the halls are tiled in cut but not polished stone in a varying grey-and-white checker pattern. Ten sets of key-rungs are hanging on each of the pillars in the big room. The room temperature is about twenty degrees Celsius, or roughly 70 degrees Fahrenheit. The only lighting as of right now are the solemn red strips of lighting lining the walls. The center of the big room at the end is mostly dark.

Summery: Long wide hall, circular room at end. Three narrower halls are perpendicular to main hall, each has about five doors; total of 15 doors on narrower halls. The long wide hall has two large doors about halfway down, between Narrow Hall A and Narrow Hall B.
The air is at 20 Celsius / 70 Farenheit. It is dim.

Ambient magic : [50/50(s)]
If you are a mage, record 20/20 power on your sheet.

Landren moves silently and seemingly without much interest in the surrounding area, the heavy metal boots managing to make little sound even as they hit the floor.

Move towards the large circular area. If anyone tries to open a door, follow them instead.

Edit: Therefore, follow Sil.

((Twenty degrees Celsius? This is a cool place.  8)))

Jurith was the last to enter, spotting no hostilities in the current vicinity. He couldn't find the lever that sealed the Vault off.

He tried to warn the rest, but noticed four of the other seven already moving in one direction.

He sighed before turning to the rest. "Watch your backs, lads. The entry is left open for any else who strayed behind, but keep your vigil. Do not be deceived by the grandeur of this Vault, for not everything is as it seems." He ended his short speech looking at the leftmost man in the group, someone that had the roughness of experience and resilience. And his strange green eyes.

Follow the last person to move.

Edit: And find any portable light source to bring along. Preferably natural, like a branch that could be lit, or a torch with a rag wrapped in oil...

"Ooh, a vault! I remember being in one back in the good old days, when the world also was threatened. Ah, memories... I wonder where this one's lab is." He utters the last sentence with a strange sheen in his eyes.

Ignore Jurith's speech and catch up with the advancing group.

Achadias nodded, hefting his hammer easily with one hand.

"These old places are infested with Demons..." He said, crossing himself across the heart at eight points-paying homage to the Chaos powers for protection.

"...but, good for shelter. Maybe find food. Can't be picky." He said tersely, smiling grimly-as if those were the only things that mattered anymore. To Achadias, little else did. He had long since ceased to care about the 'where' the 'how' and the 'why'-only the moment of impact, the tear of flesh, the moan of pleasure. All were equal.

And yet, he was constantly amused by the scarred warrior-Jurith Creyn. Had he not marked the boy, so long ago? Aye, Achadias remembered. The fool had turned his back on him, and that dishonor Achadias could not bear. Behold! How man years now? And the forces brings them together again...

And the man does not recognize him. Not a trick. His eyes pass over mine with no recognition. And why not? To the Jurith, it was a horrible day, no doubt-but Achadias had no face to him. Perhaps the Jurith forgot him on purpose, the one who had come so close to killing him. Achadias might be tempted to do the same. It's almost enough to make one believe in fate, he thinks, echoing his (former) peoples own sarcastic belief....

The Gods laugh, and men die.

The barbarian laughs now, but no one need know why, but him.

Action: Lead the Group onward!

Sil et al heads towards door C-3. Sil swings open the door, and reveals a dark, spacious room. It has many racks and shelves that lead into the shadows. Some of them have small rods of glinting metal on them. There are labels on three of the shelves. One reads IRON, KING'S, one reads IRON, COMMON, and the final one reads COPPER.

Some silver colored bars sit on the former two shelves, while a smattering of shiny bronze-colored bars are dimly illuminated at sit on the latter shelf.

Jurith doesn't find any things to use as light.

HINT: Don't walk around together when there is no danger. >.> It takes longer.

"Excellent!" Sil cried. "This must be the metals room. We can use these to build things, if, y'know, we have a good reason to. We should ask permission first though, so as not to waste it!

Speaking of which, what can you all do? I know a bit of smithing and alchemy myself, and I'm not bad in a fight..."

Landren eyed the ingots of metal. Crafting had been lost for him for some time already, but even then he felt that acquiring some metal to add to his reserves would a reasonable action in the near future...Maybe someday he got back to hammering the metal and forgot all that he had seen and done.

For the time being, his memories were still sour and those were just ingots.

Sil opens room C4, while Landren enters room C5. They can see each other.

This room has a small plaque attached to the door of C5. Landren backs out and reads, GENERAL STORAGE. Popping back in, he notes that there are 'pallets', created of wooden planks and slightly raised above the ground, in order to keep the bugs out. There are neatly folded piles of cloth, a couple of small chests, boxes made of more wooden planks, and the smell of dust.

Aaron heads towards the main room at the end of the main hall and looks up at the chandeliers. They don't seem to be candles, rather some sort of glass sphere.

Just a storage. It seems the place was safe so far. He asked himself if he was expecting hordes of enemies to fight for the dominance of the place.

Jan looked at the various types of metal, and shrugged. He wasn't a smith, but maybe a couple of the other people here were? Still, it would be best to check all of the doors.
