Not just terrorists, but a lot of them are directed towards terror threats.

Most of those make sense. "Cloud" "Mexico" and "pork," however don't.

I cringe whenever I see the Daily Mail used as the only source for a news-based post.

Clearly you're not aware of the threat posed by the Cloud-based Mexican Pork Flu.

It rains diseased pork chops from the sky.

And hello government spooks. Please to not Guantanamo me.

I've found various articles about it with google but they all point back to dailymail.co.uk. Got any other sites to add to the OP?

Unfortunately, no. Which is exactly why I would stay wary of this news, even if it seems legitimate.

This seems to be old news anyways, pretty sure we knew the US government was already using keyword searches to look for threats online, and that many keywords were nonsensical.

They do link a source but it's glitched up for me.

"Cloud" is under nuclear so presumably it's supposed to relate to clouds of nuclear matter (not that the millions of false positives from that one would be worth it).  "Mexico" is under south-west border violence so I guess that could be a contributing word.  "Pork" seems to be aimed at noticing a swine flu outbreak early (although considering you can't catch swine flu from pork that seems like an odd way of doing it).

Mexican Pork Cloud. Sounds like an Epic Meal Time's version of the meringue puff.

Consists of spices, blended pork and bacon, and bacon, and bacon, and more bacon, blended thoroughly until fluffed up and served topped with BBQ sauce on a bacon weave platter. For bonus points, we stuffed them with cheese.

Do they base themselves solely on keyword searching, or do they use pattern matching as well? (Sorry for asking but I refuse to support the daily fail in any way.) Because I could imagine pork making sense if it's often used as a synonym or code word, which could easily be picked up by pattern analysis engines.

Yeah, I'm not buying this. I'm still having a hard time buying that the whole "government spies on people through use of hotwords" thing isn't false entirely. You'd get way too much innocent data if you weren't using extremely narrow parameters, much less if you weren't using any. It sounds like the kind of thing that sounds just believable enough that you'd release that information as propaganda.

If that was what they really did to "find terrorists", which you really should be doing in places other than the internet if that's your goal, they'd want to keep the very idea more secret than it is.

See: NSA Data Center in West Utah. (I think that's where they're building it.) It's designed to troll this garble, filter it and pass on good matches to human operators so they can monitoring an individual or group of people. It's inefficient, but no one has ever accused the U.S government of being efficient.
