No true dwarf would demean himself by arming himself with a wooden weapon

I would imagine pickaxe-handles would be suitibly dwarfy.

Engraved on the floor is a well-designed image of a kobold and a carp.  The kobold is making a plaintive gesture.  The carp is laughing.

How good are non-conventional metals for armour and weapons? A caravan from the mountain-home just came and they have gold and platinum bars. Can those be used for weapons?

I know that in real life at least, gold is soft and doesn't take an edge very well, but is quite dense and heavy. Perhaps you could make gold maces or hammers?

The forge allows weapons made of iron, silver, copper, bronze, steel, bismuth bronze, and adamantine.

Not in unmodded DF.  The only way you'll get a gold or platinum weapon is through a strange mood.  Gold and platinum hammers and maces (and crossbows), should you be lucky enough to get one, are indeed quite nasty, because of their density.

a retractable bridge with a lot of stone blocks dumped over and a pressure plate on the bottom. I should try that, it should be quite fun to watch

I wonder what's the optimal drop height for that

Actually, elves won't accept obsidian swords, as wood is used in the construction.

Stupid question time. I like the idea of every dwarf carrying a crossbow around, all the time, but how do you arm civvies? Do they first need to be drafted, assigned the weapon and then kicked out of the military? Do they simply retain their weapon when they become civilians again?

Or is there a way to actually arm civilians?

I've been forcibly separated from DF for the day, so I can't tinker and find out for myself. *sob*.

You assign them to a squad, give them a uniform that includes a crossbow, and never put them on duty.

Oh, and assign some bolts to the squad.

Counterpoint- dwarven pickaxes do not have wooden handles

Weapon traps with spiked wooden balls do ok against most goblins. Of course you need more of them than you would real weapon traps. Or, you can make a dodge trap with them (narrow bridge over deep pit, the gobs dodge and down they go).

I was just about to mention these!

Spiked wooden balls attack three times each, which I believe is three times the dodgy fun if you're lining a pit trap, and reliably break goblin bones through armor that spikes won't penetrate.  I strongly reccomend them if you're having trouble without metal, but don't want to resort to spamming cage traps.
