Throne Inheritance?
« on: May 29, 2012, 07:16:21 am »

I have this REALLY annoying queen in my fort. She constantly mandates large gems, windows and other stupid stuff, and my jewelers can rarely make them. I'm afraid she's going to get my whole craftsdwarf-class killed soon, and I was wondering what would happen if I killed her? She has at least 5 children and a spouse. The spouse and the youngest child (baby) are in my fort. If she dies, will there be an inheritor? I'd like to have my fort as the mountainhome, it's just that her useless cravings piss me off. Who will inherit the throne, and will they come to my fort? I think the queen consort would be a better option, since he's a good soldier (spears and such). Damn, even my duchess is more agreeable, since she likes to order picks and ballista ammo.

Nobody will inherit any noble title. If the Duke/Duchess or the King/Queen dies... well, nobody's going to replace them.

duchess should be more agreeable since you probably picked her yourself. If she's not, wth did you choose? :p

I think your fort is already the Mountainhome if the Queen moved there.

I haven't done this myself but maybe dfhack or runesmith could help you here.  By putting another soul into the body of the queen you could get someone with less taste for expensive finery such as jewels and windows and more with the taste for gabbro statues :D

Well, I actually picked the most useless dwarf in town for the duchess' post. Apparently she had dabbling miner skill, but not the labor enabled. So, maybe I should make the queen a vampire and then make her go insane? I understand she won't mandate anything that way, and also she won't starve/die of thirst. I'd have to lock her up somewhere, though.

As I said runesmith.  You can put the soul (personality) of the queen into some miner or something, and give the most modest and least demanding dwarf's soul to the queens body so then you'll have a queen who don't ask for much.

But a queen so obsessed with large gems that she kill all the crafts dwarves in the mountain home for not managing to provider her with enough big jewels is emersive, realistic, and totally dwarfy. Why would you cheat and remove this gem of a story?

I see what you did there.

It isn't a new Dwarf Fortress version until we're made to fear some kind of regular creature.  Carp, Elephants, Unicorns, Badgers, and now Mosquitos.  I've got 5 dorfBucks on the next one being plagues of groundhogs.

Runesmith is dead. It's developer is out of reach for 3 months already. Maybe you meant DFhack? But i don't know how to meddle with such a task in dfhack. Try asking in dfhack thread in modding forum.

Phew, by letting only my best gem cutters to use the workshop, I can usually fill her orders. What should I do with the gems, since the Queen Almighty Sovereign of All Lands Beneath doesn't want me to sell them either? Can you do a diamond cat shredder? :D

Unfortunately, large gems are currently only good for trade value. They're increasing the value of your fort, though.  :D

I think my fort has passed the point where fort value mattered, since all my gold stuff, architecture etc. have allowed it to sky rocket, and my population is full. Maybe I'll just dump pile them neatly in the Queens office?

That'll work. Definitely raise the value of the specific room - I don't know if dwarfs get extra happy thoughts from admiring things dumped on the floor if it's one of their preferences.
