Wheelbarrows
« on: May 29, 2012, 04:31:29 am »

Hey folks i just had a look at the new version and i must say i am allmost mildly disgruntled. is it me or do wheelbarrows just kinda not work? heres the thing. i dug in and disasembled my cart it took a full year to move all the objects inside. like three months in i figured this must be becuse i ongly had one wheelbarrow so i made 5 more but then i started watching the highly intelligent creatures work and they seem to pick up a wheelbarrow go grab an object move the object to a destination and then kinda just leave the barrow there. meanwhile there are 5 availiable barrows and they prefer dumping rocks with their hands and moving at a snailspace. am i doing some setting wrong? dont get me wrong i aint putting the game as a whole down its just this made it kinda weird. thoughts ?

Could be a couple of things.

1) Make sure you set the wheelbarrow to be used by the stockpile with [w]. If you want them to use more wheelbarrows, you need to assign more (up to three)

2) Only assign 'barrows to stockpiles for heavy objects like rocks, furniture and cages. A wheelbarrow can only hold one item at a time, so it actually makes hauling small stuff slower.

3) Once you assign a wheelbarrow to a stockpile, dwarves will ONLY use the 'barrow, no matter how many of them are idle.

4) Unless you've set the stockpile to [g]ive to a workshop, dwarves will still grab bigass, heavy rocks on the other side of the map to drag to the workshop.

5) Dwarves need the Hauling>Vehicle duty to use 'barrows. Make sure this is turned on in addition to other hauling tasks.

For stone and metal related workshops put a stockpile RIGHT next to them with a wheelbarrow or two, with orders to take from a larger stone stockpile.

And a note for constructions: USE BLOCKS! They are lighter(so haulers move them faster), and you get more than one per stone.

We just need to get Toady to embed a Lisp interpreter into DF.  Learning lambda calculus in order to play the game wouldn't make DF's learning curve much steeper.

Also, with the change to mining drop rate, you're better off using blocks for constructions, otherwise you find yourself running out of stone for construction.

A wheelbarrow can only hold one item at a time, so it actually makes hauling small stuff slower.

I'm a little confused by that, since we're also told that a wheelbarrow can hold one-fifth the amount a minecart can hold. Doesn't that seem contradictory? Either they can hold one item at a time or they can hold one-fifth as much as a minecart, but how can both be true?

What am I missing?

Wait... it took a YEAR to get things inside your fort? What did you bring with you? How far from the wagon to the stockpile? I generally don't bring heavy things, so I do not assign a wheelbarrow to my initial "holds everything the wagon brought" stockpile.

Here is the thing with wheelbarrows: if you have one assigned to a stockpile, then only one dwarf can give/take from the stockpile at a time. Also, you absolutely need to assign a wheelbarrow to a stockpile for it to be used, and then it will only be used to give/take from that stockpile. It sounds as though you made five wheelbarrows and expected them to be used for all or any of your stockpiles without assigning them explicitly. Finally, you can only assign a maximum of three wheelbarrows to a stockpile. This really makes it so that wheelbarrows should only ever be assigned to stockpiles that hold nothing but very heavy things, like stones. Even wood stockpiles do not need a wheelbarrow, dwarves will haul logs just as fast by hand.

I do feel like it should at least be possible to assign as many wheelbarrows as one wishes to a stockpile.

@Footjob, you can microwave most grains I've tried pretty easily through the microwave, even if they aren't packaged for it.

I found that using 3 wheelbarrows in my metal bar stockpile significantly improved hauling time for that pile. I recommend that for metal stocks as the full bins are causing significant slowdown and a wheelbarrow can remove the penalty.

they can hold one fifth as much as a minecart if a minecart can hold 5 items!

The wiki says that a minecart can carry as much as 2400 rolls of cloth or 100 stone blocks. The wiki calls that "an enormous amount," and yes, I'd agree. But now you're trying to tell me that it can carry only FIVE ITEMS?

Something's wrong somewhere, and I don't think it's my math.  :D

I don't know the answer either, but just a guess: perhaps when it says 100 stone blocks, it means 5 bins, each containing 20 blocks? Bins have always counted as a single item for hauling purposes, even before the recent hauling changes.

As far as the 2400 rolls of cloth, no idea, a bin certainly doesn't hold 480 of them.

It's not strictly 1, but the dwarves will only use them for one unless they're grabbing a barrel or bin of something. So if you have a plant stockpile, the dwarves will take the wheelbarrow and grab a single plant from a field to bring back. They don't go around and collect stuff like they do with bins.

Actually has science been done on that? In my last fort I noticed I was having problems because my entire cloth stockpile was being held in a single bin.
