Panopticon's journal
Winter 109

Winter, picking up the bodies, getting metal production moving some more.Got a bit of work done on the tower

Charcoal is in major shortage here, I ordered the burning of the wooden cages we have for more.

Hmm, I suppose I could have ordered the removal of the prisoners from those cages first, oh well, they burn too it seems.

Doren the Jewelmaster has been possessed and is now working on a single amethyst.

Produced a perfect amethyst, so boring I didn't even bother to remember the name.

Exploratory digging found a second cavern level, man that is a long way down, we hit it at level -35

well that is odd, since when did migrants come in the Winter?

Looks like Zen got bored lying in bed, saw him at the woodburners earlier today, in addition to the missing arm one of his legs is basically torn to shreds, he says it's nothing and hes got a crutch, far be it from me to argue with royaly.

Drow caravan here, let's see who ambushes it.

No one, instead a couple frost giants try to snatch a baby, when discovered they refuse to leave the fort, so we spend the next couple weeks chasing them around with the help of the caravan guards,

It is now summer.

Things the next victim should know, we have a population of 66, we have a booze shortage looming that needs more containers to deal with. I got another floor of the tower mostly done, the Drow are at the Depot right now waiting to trade, interruption from the thieves has prevented me from doing it, but our trade goods are either in the Depot or on the way right now.

Also, Frost Giants are sending thieves, you know what that means for a year from now.

* Actually, one of the caged thieves is an "Elf Fanatic".  Never seen that before.  I'll leave it to one of the military leaders to decide what to do with that guy.

Early Spring, 110
Finally, I've found myself a new body... unfortunately, while a berserker, he is not nearly as strong as the previous one. I'll have to do something about that, by the way. That body possessed the best fighting skills of the fort, the loss of it can't go unpunished.
Huh. I guess this whole 'wandering spirit' thing gets creepier with each new possessed body. I don't care, not as long as I get results. And I don't care if others care - fuck others. I can still punch anybody to death here, so let them complain. They can't exactly DO anything about it, so I just simply took control.

Sok, about the general state of affairs.
The drow brought in some sweet things, but we are not exactly on top of things, tradegood-wise. The first thing I grabbed was a bunch of sauropods - six of them, in fact. They will be trained and bred for war: the numerous enemy encounters don't bode well for our future, and warbeasts are a good way to prepare. I didn't think I'll ever say this, but some elf caravan might come in handy in this department.
I also bought quite a bit of booze, in exchange for some decent food. I'm told our booze stockpiles are running low, but food reserves are overflowing, so that seemed like a reasonable thing to do.

The remaining tradegoods were enough to buy all of the merchants' mithril, a grimoire of death, some fungiwood seeds, things like that. Usual stuff, except for the grimoire. I figured this place could use some gore.

My first action of overseer was to remove Panopticon from the position of militia commander (for the grave error of letting me die). So, I reclaimed my old position, but not my quarters. It seems like that belongs to our mayor. Normally, I would just kick her out in a heartbeat, but she's a veteran from the old fort, and that demands some respect.
Work on my new estate has begun.

Somehow I'm beginning to think that frost giants are overrated, at least I can take it one on one without so much as a scratch. Apparently, this is also the first kill of this new body: Hatedust the Worldender is not a bad start, I'll say. I'm back, baby!

(Big-ass update, but sorry, no proofread, so it may be ridden with typos. I'll correct it tomorrow. Edit: corrected, as long as I know.)

Late Spring, 110
I dislike squads as large as these. I gave Zen Jr the command of the fortress guard, and gave him Nyala, The Hammered One, and an average axedwarf by the name of Kilrud. That leaves the fortress guard with four members, my squad with five, and Mokar's with four. Of course there's the ranger squad as well, but who gives a shit about them, honestly?

Whoa! We are to become a barony. That is a great honor, on one hand. On another hand, I have to recommend somebody as baron... it's tempting to just recommend myself, but I have the sanity not to - the mountainhomes may have a problem recognizing a noble with changing bodies. Since he's nobility already, I just nominated Zen Jr instead. Frankly, it could have been any of the previous overseers, they did a fine job (except Panopticon, letting me die and all that), so recommending the crown prince was the only option to shut everyone up. If I said any other name, there might have been... disagreements. Nobody would dare to question royalty though.

I suppose I should start working on his baron estates I guess. Giving him a few levels of the tower seems like a fitting choice. I'm sure he would like that.

The drow finally left. We made an agreement which I don't think they could possibly refuse, so it's expected that we get dragons, sauropods and more mithril next year. I also requested a breeding pair of direwolves if possible: they can't hold a candle to larger warbeasts in a real fight, but they can be decent guardians for nobility. Some of their creepy-ass metals would also be nice, at least we could put that grimoire to a good use, I hinted at that as well.

A kid went apeshit crazy, and somehow destroyed one of the forges. That's definitely not cool.

On another note, I gave some of the useless guys a new task: try to recreate a rune, so we could finally get something out of the hall of the mountain king. Of course dwarven science has never been easy, so every important... well, semi-important... okay, so everyone who is not just a burden for all of us is kept safely away from the little science project.

OK, so giving power to Zen Jr was not my brightest idea ever. He goes around and beats people up for any minor offense. He's telling me there's nothing he can do, since we don't have any sort of jail, so direct hammering is the only kind of punishment he can think of. We'll get to that prison thing ASAP.

The sentries sounded the alarm! To glory, my fellow brothers in arms! To victory! This is the hour of fate, our greatest battle ever!
It was a fox. I gave the sentries to Zen Jr for punishment.

That fucking kid again. Now, he went insane, attacked his own mother (a forgemaster even), who had to strangle him to death, as self-defense. I'm sure she'll... get over that. Yeah, that's something you can forget, right?

Migrants. I was trying hard not to give a shit, but that's not possible in this case: they have an iron golem with them. Well, and two soldiers, but that's routine at this point. Come to think of it, I don't think every possible soldier is drafted yet. I'll get to that immediately.

The animals are in chaos. I've issued a few adequate halls to be dug out for them: I plan to keep seperate animals apart, mainly because I don't want them to hurt each other, but also for the purpose of breeding. The first of the 'stables' goes to the sauropods obviously, the dogs can stay and guard the entrance, they are good at that in such numbers as they are.
We'll need a decent animal training area (the topside kennel is a bad joke), as well as decent housing for a future dungeon master - I want a dedicated man for the sauropods, and possible dragons in the future, and that position comes with some merits.

The scouts informed me that we are under some kind of weird siege. Nobody exactly SEES anything, but there are unmistakable sounds of war drums from the second cavern floor. I'm positive they are right this time - though I'm unsure about who or what wants to attack us now, I say bring 'em on!

On another note, the mayor banned the export of bins. I'm sure that'll do wonders for trade. I know I should have kicked her out of my chambers when I had the chance.

Goblin ambush! The turrets work like a charm, but I wanted the soldiers to show their stuff as well. It was a bad idea. Lish, an axedwarf lost a hand - what are these bodkin arrows, cannonballs? A single one of them cut through his arm like it was nothing. He bled to death soon after that. Eventually, we closed the distance between us and the archers, and that yielded predictable results: we massacred them without further casualties. I would have been OK with that, enough fighting for one day, and all that. Unfortunately, goblins are cunning little bastards - there were two more ambush parties nearby. One of them was an archer squad (easy pickings), the other was a group of lashers.
Now THOSE were tough sons of bitches. First off, they straigh up killed our manager. Just like that, dead. Panopticon took an arrow to the arm, but since Panopticon's not a total pussy, the arm didn't disintegrate, just broke a bit, let go of the shield, and the soldier fell over. The iron golem that came with the migrants, a pet turtle, and some woodcutter also got bad treatment, injuries were piling up alltogether.

Meanwhile, Nyala and Mokar took on the great task of dispatching a couple of gray langurs. I'm sure that was really fucking important, but I would have appreciated some help with the fucking goblin fucking melee fucking squad - the squad that I had to fight by myself, because all of my men were busy turning into pin cushions, thanks to the archers.

When my partners were done with the langurs, they finally decided it was time to help me. It was then that it turned into a disaster. When I was alone, it went great: limbs flying everywhere, goblins dropping dead, the usual stuff. Then Nyala rushed in to help, disemboweled a goblin, beheaded an other, and then collapsed in the mud. For the record, that's NOT a safe thing to do next to a couple of lashers. He survived the incident, but barely.

In the end, we won the battle, the goblins were broken and defeated, but our own troops weren't much to look at, either. Mokar, Panopticon and Nyala all ended up in the hospital, all three of them with serious injuries. At best, it will take months for them to return to active duty, at worst, there is a serious risk of infection. We have one military casualty (poor Lish), a few civilian ones, and a couple of useless pets. All in all, could be better, but could be far worse. I'll have to scrap the idea of meeting the underground siege head on though. We need something else for that.

Summer, 110
I was digging out a few new tombs when I found a new vein of bituminous coal. While I do enjoy murdering trees for charcoal, this is extremely good news for our metal industry.

Holy shit, the forgotten beast Kogot has come! It's entirely made of pig iron, walks on four legs, has large mandibles, and hungers for warm blood... that raised drawbridge was a nice touch. Maybe it meets the siege forces, whatever those may be?

Now a tundra titan, you've got to be kidding me! To arms, men, to arms! we can take this one: it's just a huge feathered dimetrodon. It even emanates giving and kindness, this should be easy. The titan mangled a baby drake for warmup, and then collided with the iron golem that was battered during the goblin ambush. The golem couldn't exactly HURT the titan, but it bought us valuable time.
The Hammered One was the first to the scene, and immediately began slashing the abomination with his mithril zweihander, to a surprising extent: he bruised muscles and fat alike, which is not much in general, but pretty impressive, considering that the golem couldn't pierce its skin for shit. Unfortunately, only a few recruits came to his aid in time, and the titan eventually caved in his skull. A fitting end for a noble warrior.
Just a moment after that, a one-handed recruit managed to pierce the brain of the damn bird, so it went down almost immediately after The Hammered One.

Meanwhile, there was some serious action going below: the forgotten beast seems to have found our invaders, who turned out to be antmen. Those are very agile, and Kogot is a clumsy beast, so the ants had the upper hand from the start. Their crude rusty weapons could barely harm Kogot, so at first, I thought that may not hold out for long.
I was wrong. Turns out 'barely' hurting an enemy is enough if you can keep it up indefinitely. It took quite a while, but they absolutely crushed the beast.

Another small migrant wave, with another iron golem. These thing start to pile up, really. I think I'll station them at the entrance instead of dogs - they are waaay more durable.

Sauropod training is going well, I've assigned one of them to every prominent military figure: Panopticon, Zen Jr, Mokar, Nyala and myself.

Well, Nyala got up from his hospital bed, and promptly threw a tantrum: picking fights, destroying minor buildings... sadly, Zen Jr just had to interfere. Normally, this fight might have gone a bit differently, but Nyala's injuries took their toll, and after a few blows, he collapsed to the floor, dead. A sad end for a good soldier.

A few days after Nyala had his... incident, a mind flayer ambush party attacked our woodcutters. It's almost as if they somehow... sensed the passing of their nemesis. Soon, it turned out to be actually worse: they were waiting for the human caravan that came in just after they revealed themselves. We didn't have a choice - if we wanted that caravan, we had to meet the illithids on the field.
However, when they saw our militia, they turned around and just ran. It was sadly anticlimactic.

Crafty bastards: before they left, they set fire to the grass. It didn't harm us directly, but it scared off the caravan. The bastards will pay for this one.

"Just" a huge feathered one of those ?

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I also try to envision an army of four-armed Antmen swarming an iron giant in barely lit caverns.
EDIT: I also just realized that I posted this in the wrong thread, sorry for non-rpg discussion.

"Just" a huge feathered one of those ?

Well it's way friendlier than a colossal elephant made of pig iron, complete with mandibles and shit! Anyway it's dead. A seriously injured golem, an average soldier and two recruits were all it took. I consider that very easy, as a titan.

Autumn, 110
The antmen have lifted their 'siege'. It appears they took quite a beating from the forgotten beast, and that forced them to abandon their attack.

A small group of migrants came in. Just a couple of folks, two of them went into the military to replace the vacancy left by Nyala and Lish. there's also a master blacksmith with them, that's sort of awesome.

Found two more coal veins at the burial level. Some of the civilians don't like my idea to exploit minerals around the tombs, but they can kiss my ass. We need that coal.

Also began digging a big-ass outer moat. My idea is that a single bridge will be built to allow passage for caravans, and right next to it, there will be cage traps. That should take care of any possible future ambush attempt. It won't defeat any invader, but at least they can1t sneak up on us when it's completed. Unfortunately, it's a longshot, the system is very-very-very far from complete.

The moat is complete, the bridge over it is not - I hope no trade caravan comes in just yet, that would be quite embarrasing.

Oh god, another siege from the caves. Again, I can't see shit, but it's safe to assume the antmen have returned. I'm entertaining the thought of breaching the caverns, and seeing what they're made of. Probably squishy stuff under all that chitin.

What do you know, the traders are here. what's more, they managed to pass through the maot before it was completely filled with water, that's awesome. I hope they like gold - what proper dwarf doesn't like gold?
Holy shit this caravan is HUGE. I've stopped counting the wagons when the fifteenth came through. How the hell did a caravan like this could NOT draw the attention of ambushers?

Cute, a goblin babysnatching attempt right next to the golems. It was dealt with in seconds.

Shit, an orc ambush! I guess they wanted to raid the caravan, and we are just an added bonus. Well, we'll see.
As usual, I was the first real soldier to arrive at the field, but by then, it was a mess. The orcs swam in through the river (They can do that. Who knew.), and rushed toward the entrance. They almost made it in, but they ran into our legendary miner, Tulon.

They didn't know the first and foremost rule about dwarf miners: do not ever fuck with one. Tulon calmly proceeded to break every bone in the first orc cutta's body, and that held off the rest just long enough for me to interfere. And by 'interfere', I mean cut the next fucker right in two (Angels on the sideline, Baffled and confused. Father blessed them all with reason. And this is what they choose.*) Well yeah, they beheaded one of the merchants right after that, but I don't see how that could be my fault: they have their own guards after all.
At that point, Panopticon and the rest of the military arrived, and that was basically it. Any chance the orcs had quickly vanished when the sauropods finally emerged from the fort. They stomped the remaining attackers to a bloody pulp, shattering bones with each move they made. I bisected two more orcs, beaten another to death, and did all all-around fine job, finishing the battle with four orc kills in total. One of the seriously injured golems grabbed an orc cutta, and jumped into the moat with it. The golem didn't survive the fall, but the invader drowned with it.
And that was pretty much it: the orcs were no more. It was a bloody battle, we lost two recruits and a mason, and the caravan lost a caravan guard and a trader.

*Sorry, couldn't leave it.

Winter, 110
The merchants have some kind of problem with the new bridge. Those that came through the moat are fine, but a few of them got stuck  on the other side when the water gushed in, and had to wait for the actual bridge to be constructed. Now it's complete, but still won't cross for some reason. And their partners refuse to trade with us until they do. We seem to be in a little standoff. If they go mad from being 'stuck' here (it's ridiculous, a fucking parade of dragons could cross that bridge, it's three urists wide for Armok's sake!), I won't take responsiblities for the actions of the fortress guard. If anybody, even an outposts liaison starts to make trouble, Zen Jr will be there. I hope they fully understand the problem with that scenario, and come to their senses before this gets ugly.

They packed their stuff and left. Fuck those guys, I don't need them anyway: we have mithril, steel, excellent soldiers, a couple of good golems, turrets - what more could a military leader ask for? Well, more of that obviously, but it's not like we depend on them or anything.

One of the sauropods gave birth today, to not one, but three calves. Huh. I thought these things are reptiles, and they lay eggs and shit. Not that I'm complaining, giant stomping machines are always welcome. Well they are not giant yet, but you get the point.

A turret cage somehow fell into the river from the trader's wagons. Slade-, bullet- and warpstone turrets, two of each... I won1t be able to do it, as my term is near its end, but the next overseer should definitely make efforts to retrieve that - pumping maybe? It would definitely be a nice catch.

Mokar is still a bit depressed. Fortunately, all that orc-slaying cheered him up a bit, but he is still a bit broken up about some family members dying or something. Wife and children I'm told. I'm trying to improve the situation, so he was given another sauropod, and I plan to give Zen Jr's current estate to him, when the Prince gets his own place in the tower. His dining room is already roofed over and fully furnished, but the bedroom and office takes time. More time than I originally thought.

Another batch of sauropod calves, three of them again. This could be the beginning of something awesome here: fine, they take a while to grow up, but this brings up our sauropod count to 12. When the newborn calves grow up, we could potentially assign one of them to every soldier here - or better yet, assign them all to a single beastmaster, who leads all of them to glory!

The drow traders have returned. They safely made it in, just before a goblin ambush party arrived... We're going to fuck those guys so hard, even their mothers won't recognize them!

Before we left to kick their asses, our broker informed us that we have aquired another sauropod, four dragons, a nice collection of bloodsteel and ironbone, a pair of direwolves, along with the usual booze supply. All we had to give for this was our supply of gold crafts, a few useless weapons - mostly orc loot, or no longer relevant iron weaponry. I'm starting to like this broker.

Two of the recruits were immediately killed when they charged ahead. I suppose they just tried to follow my example. Unfortunate that they lacked the skill to pull off something like that properly. Another recruit was close to succumbing to the lasher attack when Mokar arrived. He immediately turned the tide, by bashing the golbin SO HARD with his hammersling that he broke most of its bones. Four of the remaining goblins panicked, and the cage traps got them... pity, it wasn't my intention to use the traps to such extent.

Finally, Mephistopheles and Tun the Former Overseer (who the fuck is that by the way?) finished off the last remaining goblin on the 27th of Obsidian. The third recruit is seriously hurt, but he will definitely survive the encounter.

With that final triumph, it is time for me to retire from the office of overseer, and leave the fort to the - hopefully - capable hands of the next volunteer. as always, I'd very much like to keep leading the militia - but please, try not to kill me this time.

About my accomplishments:
- Fuel supplies are more than adequate, thanks to the coal veins, we have hundreds of the stuff.
- The military is armed and armored, in fact, we have gear for a couple more souls, if there are any capable ones that I don't know about.
- We have a metric fuckton of warbeasts now, please try not to eat all the dragon eggs so it could stay that way.
- Zen Jr has his dining room office and bedroom in the tower now, it spans two floors. His old rooms went to Mokar, as promised.
- The prison can hold ten inmates at any given time. If this proves to be too few, there's room for expansion. Please use metal chains at all times, ropes are too easy to tear apart.
- There's a small garrison near the intended breaching point of the second cavern layer. Some beds, a little food and booze, small dining room, that kind of stuff. The mammoth and the leopard are still there, but we didn't take down the final wall of rock, we had enough problems topside.
- As we have some ironbone and bloodsteel now, it may be possible to build the church of the dark depths - It's not simple, but I think I have everything to set that project in motion.
- Lazy-ass science team didn't research shit, so still no rune for us.
- try to get the turret cage that fell into the moat somehow. I don't know how, since the river is refilling the moat constantly, but maybe pumping IS an option. The cage is right next to the new bridge.
- The tower has five floors now, so we can start calling it a REAL tower. First floor is the well room obviously, second floor was left empty for possible furtrer use (ranger barracks or turret station maybe?), third and fourth floors are for the crown prince, captain of the guard and future baron, so don't disturb it. Maybe spice it up with some glass windows, that would be nice.
- Fifth floor is under construction, but mostly done.
- We don't need to burn wood anymore, save it for the carpenters, and for emergencies.
- If you look at the military level carefully, you may find the little hole I live in now, near the animal training area. Keep the fuck out if you know what's good for you.
- We have a decent supply of gold, wolfram and platinum, but not much in the edged-weapon material department. Most of our steel went into armor production, but there are plenty of coarse iron bars left, so feel free to jumpstart the industry. We also have a single slademantine bar. Try not to waste that.
- No changes were made to any crafting or housing areas (well except the royal estate of Zen Jr and my new modest quarters), and I only built a tomb for myself. I wish to keep my future bodies in a neat line, so pretty please don't expand the cemetery in that direction.
-You may want to check out the booze situation, the drow didn't bring nearly as much as I hoped they would.
- Seriously, if you mess with my room again, I'll build something even bigger next time, possibly with solid mithril walls or something.

a diplomat has left unhappy.

Besmartes and the surrounding lands have been made a barony. that's nice to know.

Good news we recovered the turrets from the moat.

i see we encountered a forest imp. Release the rape train.

oh it got scarred and jumped in the river (the river was at 2/7 3/7 amount near the end at that point)

zen had mandated the production of a barrel. We had some on hand

We hit a metal of armok what ever that does

domas adog banned the export of quivers. why? what have quivers ever done to you.

i ordered the killing of a beak dog and ishar tore  that beast apart. this is the reason he is in the military because we are afraid of what he will do if he isn't killing something.

ah the wierdo in the fey mood began making something. i ordered the beak dog dead because he needed a hide and some bones and there was some beak dogs outside.

ok we hit cavern lvl 3 we did not breach it on a ground level so we are safe

um we also found a curious underground structure. ok im scarred now. i will have a military garrison in the main stair well in case if shit hits the fan.

oh good he calmed down.
He says he was traumatized by a lesser pretentious office arrangements. WHAT THE FUCK ZEN DID YOUR TABLE RAPE YOU WHY ITS A OFFICE ARRANGEMENT NOT THE DEATH OF A GOOD FRIEND! Thats the only bad thing on his mind other than that he has minor injuries.

oh fuck another tantrum well at least zen calmed down.

the fort has attracted no migrants this season. fucking cave beast's starting sieges when they cant even get to us

ugh zen is throwing another tantrum

look im sorry ishar but you need to share a office with zen because he thinks he is being raped by his table. this is probably the best way to stop the tantrums.

huh remember when the army of zambies went to the edge of the caves. i was looking at the reports and they said there was a black opal golem down there.

ok zen is still throwing a tantrum and im scarred he wont come out of it

oh thank armok he came out of it. ok i had to remove zen from fort guard d it was having a adverse effect on his sanity

a vile force of darkness has arrived PANIC PANIC

ok seconds after a siege arrvied (a cave one from lvl 2 none the less) a human caravan is here.

an ambush after the humans got in. um shit this is alot of goblins. and they brought giant ants.

ok there are like 40 goblins and even more siege animal and they just keep coming there have been like 5 ambush messages. zen and a few others are dead. our best bet is just to try to restart summer

I suggest that we add a clause permitting the keelhauling of anyone who suggests a plan involving "zombify the crew".
