summer 104

Summer, looks like the merchants found a necromancer on their way out, their guards handled it, it was an elf too. Coincidence?

Started building the tower after being reminded that is sorta the point we are here.

Humans have arrived to trade! I don't remember seeing them before, I wonder why they are showing up now?

Ogods, they were pursued by trolls!

And Goblins!

SO MANY GOBLINS!!!

The human guards are really good, they took down the trolls with no problems, but the goblins are still there, I have ordered everyone inside for now.

That was the best plan, now we are attacked by goblins riding giant ants and cave crawlers.

Ishar why are you going outside? You have so much to live for!
He appears to be trying to catch his Dragon Raptor, I don't think that will end well, fight Ishar, fight for your life!

Damn merchant, I don't care about your trade agreement right now!

Ishar appears to have failed at fighting for his life, the gates are sealed and no goblins got in, we lost four though, in addition to all the guard animals stationed outside. Ishar, Questionquality, my lover Zuntir who was one of the founding seven, and some other miner who I never bothered to care about.

The goblins seem to be happy outside, why not? They have a whole caravan worth of loot to play with, there is a single merchant with donkey who ended up in the fort, he seems agitated. I've heard stories of merchants going mad when they are unable to trade or leave, hope that doesn't happen before we can open the gate.
This has been a terrible summer.

That blew, I set everyone to burrows when the attack started, but the four I mentioned didn't appear to care at all about that, Ishar appeared to actually be looking for his raptor, I don't know what was up with the others.

On another dangerous note, I noticed that our expedition leader likes to hold meetings on the far right edge of the map, nothing happened to him this time but that could end poorly as well.

I might get Autumn done tonight, but more likely I'll be until Monday to finish the turn.

Bugger. It seems that I kind of died. It's kind of a pity, I just started to like the place. Bastards got my raptor, too, as well as some of the others.
As I see the fort from up here, I don't exactly have high hopes for the lads. The population is low as it is, our deaths won't exactly improve morale, and the goblins won't leave anytime soon. Sure, they can release the dragon to just burn everything, but that's a bit drastic, and could hardly be called a 'plan'. Maybe Meph has some clever idea, I don't know. Something.
At least as long as my body isn't buried, I can watch the whole show from here. Really confy, actually. Who knows, maybe I'll go down and visit them in this shiny new form someday. I'm sure they would be thrilled to see me again.

I think unleashing dragons to burn the world sounds like a brilliant plan right now. But dont hold me accountable for that.

Panopticon's Journal
Fall 104

Started training the dragons for war, still stuck inside. Pretty chaotic out there, looks like there is a necromancer somewhere who is raising the dead, the goblins appear to have been mostly overrun by zombies.

I had some thoughts about trying to let the dragons out and burning zombies, but without killing the necromancer there is no point. The doors are staying closed for now.

Our lack of fuel has brought metal production to a stall, we have an abundance of gems though, so perhaps we can make weapons and armor from those.

The merchants have gone berserk! The elf wanders the mines looking for conflict, and the human tried to punch a war sauropod with predictable results.

About a week later the elf came out of the mine, and a sauropod and dragon dealt with him. I need to get those dragons caged before they kill us all.

I've disbanded the squads and made Higgenbottom the new militia commander, not that he has much to command, or to do, he also holds the title of psychiatrist for some reason.

New life! A boy has been born, only a lot of years until he can work!

Oh joy, a trade caravan has shown up, sorry folks, kill the zombies or stay out there.

Hah! Goblins are ambushing the undead, most amusing.

Man there are a ton of goblins out there, no mounts this time though. the merchants are having a hard time of it. The latest squad appears to be lead by a Frost Giant they chant his title: Awe-inspiring Glitter of Dabbling

Aww, Meph had a baby girl!

And that rounds out the season, our visitors have killed the undead, mostly, but they haven't found the necromancer responsible yet. We still can't open the doors, also thieves keep stealing crap from outside the walls, on the positive side at least they are all out there!

Winter will be done in a few hours, I'll post screenshots and so on at that time.

I think, the lack of migrants endangers the King's tower program?  Clearly razing the region to the ground in a blaze of dragonfire is a suitable back up plan.  Let's at least get an obelisk or some such installed so that the locals remember the fury of the Mountainhomes even after the fires fade.  Not to mention, to serve as a legally verifyable stake of claim on the land, which may placate the King on the off chance that anyone here makes it home alive.

If we spend a few seasons using some of these fancy workshop plans sent by the King's R&D dwarf we can stockpile some suitably terrifying and/or ostentatious construction materials.  Ornamental bricks, Bone blocks, Cobalt statues, that sort of thing.

Winter 104

It's been a couple weeks, the goblins have been driven off with heavy losses, and of course the undead ranks just keep growing.

The human diplomat went mad and now wanders around the fort moping.

Set up a contained area to start a fire without letting the enemies inside, at least hopefully. Gonna try a brushfire first, if that doesn't work I'll put the dragons out there.

... Just realised that static fire sources won't pass over the bridge when it is down, dragons it is.

Sad stuff, there is a herd of horses running around out there. They seem to be killing the zombies that come near them more often than not.

Hmm, doors are open, but the dragons won't go outside and set fire to things. Move damn you!

Curses, one of the dragons moved out, but it's raining so the fire doesn't spread far, now he is dead. Hopefully the other one sets stuff on fire after the rain stops.

Oh joy, the drow are here, sorry guys, doors are staying shut.

Erush is back, and by back I mean haunting us.

It's finally spring and I can step down, the drow are still running around out there, but I don't think they will stay alive much longer. Whatever, this is a problem for someone else.

I could put up some pictures, but not a lot has changed from the last set, if folks demand it I will edit this with some.

save is here http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=6537 the fort is now in the hands of Jakmak.

Spring of (insert year here)
ok then i have been elected to run the fort. All hell has broken loose here. There are zombies a large part of the ground is charred. This is the worst monday ever.

It seems i struck a blessing of armok what ever that does so i had ordered it mined out. I also ordered the construction of a moat right outside our walls. That should help a little bit.

Hmmmm damp stone. Im not gonna fuck with that so it can be someone elses problem. I also hit a rusty weapon bundle if anyone cares at all.

I had all the cages brought out to the center of one of the rooms to see whats in side. I also reclaimed the majority of the junk outside.
One of the sauropods gave birth to i think 2 calves.

Ah shit 2 of the miners inhaled warpstone dust. please dont die we dont want you to stink up the fort

Well it seems there was a forest imp out side and it ran into a zombie. Oh the hilarity that will happen shortly.

I also made a trap engie workshop.  I also had the are above the damp stone dug out and i found a tear of armok.

I ordered the mining stair well thingy to be dug all the way to the very bottom in hopes of lava.

I hit a cavern. i hope the spores make it up soon.

Shit i hit a tear of armok in the stair well. well nothing is flooded so thats a good sign.

Well then a drake gave birth. Now to repress seeing it happen.

Another cavern with crystal trees and poison glass? I  best not fuck around with it.

hmmm there is a ambush. what ever we are fine the door is sealed and they can play with the zombies. I think they want some brains

One of the mastiffs has grown up.

The treasury master from idla rala has arrived. He is so fucked. Even if i could fine the lever to open the door i would not open it. Its insane out there.

He is also with the elves. couldnt find the lever they are screwed. same as the treasury master will not open the door unless they kill those zombies.

well then another cavern  dam these things are far down. i hope i hit magma soon.

well its summer.

look im sorry but i dont think i will be able to finish my turn completely so someone else will need to finish my turn and so theres  :( . im sorry truly but it doesnt seem possible for me.  i will upload the save file. Hey maybe you will get more  "FUN" :D

Damn this mess is crazy. I mean I knew I was surrounded by incompetent fools the whole time, but come on! In the end, I may have to possess another body to sort this thing out... it seems the little shits are useless without me.

Summer, 105
Shit. The whole fort is in such a sorry situation... I couldn't think this was even possible. Since this whole mess damn well qualifies as a military emergency, it's natural for the people of angelictower to turn their heads towards a previous military overseer - to me. The fact that I'm dead didn't really matter much, since everything previously dead is now walking freely. My ghost is here, and that seems to be enough for these folks.

First, I ordered the mining operations to stop. We have enough problems as it is, we don't need some beast invasion from the caverns, too. Second, I ordered the construction of a gemforge. Honestly, I don't know how this could slip anybody's mind. We didn't have the neccessary large gems for it during my time, but we do now.

At the very start of summer, a berserker orc scout berserker appeared, a berserker hunter berserker. Berserker? Berserker! Can't blame the poor orcs for too much berserking, they aren't that good at anything else really. He killed one of the remaining stray elves just to show us he could, and then left. If that means that orcs could possibly come to kill us, that would be just peachy: maybe an orc army could clear out all of these zobmies, and possibly even find the necromancer.

The zombies are chasing after a wild boar, and the remaining elves are taking shots at them once in a while. Not very effective of course, but at least they are doing something, not like us. I have a plan though. Nasty and unfair, but a plan nontheless. The thing is, we need lots of mechanisms for it, and by my counts, we have, like, four of them, so I ordered more to be constructed. And cages. We're going to need lots of cages... it hurts me to do this, but I see no other option: we capture all of the fuckers, then gather them all in a single cage, and collapse a cave upon them, then pretend the whole thing never happened. Nothing glorious, not a battle for bards to sing about, not an intricate trap system for future scholars to study - just plain old cages.

Nice theory. Simple as a goblins' mind. Nothing could possibly go wrong.

Well, what do you know. The elves surprisingly killed A LOT of the undead. Like, half of them at least. Of course the necromancer keeps raising new ones, and the elves have already left, so I guess it doesn't really matter.

One of the guys told me it's good news, one of the zombie heads is no longer enraged. I punched him in the face and told to go back and make more fucking mechanisms.

We've extended the cemetery - I imagine if this crisis is ever solved, we're going to need a lot of coffins. Also, the gemforge is up and running, we are already making gem weapons and armour. I'd be jumping with joy, if not for two things:
- We only have one soldier, so it doesn't really matter if we have 10 breastplates for him.
- There are more than sixty undead creatures out there now, a good number of those are trolls, and there's the dragon as well. We can't possibly take them on anyway.

I'm surprised how content everyone is, sitting with a full-fledged zombie apocalypse over our heads. The only non-undead things out there are butterflies now.

What a surprise. No migrants. This is my unimpressed face.

Since I have nothing else to do, I've fitted every bedroom with a cabinet. We have dozens of them lying around, I don't exactly know why. Somebody thought it would be fucking important to launch a full-scale cabinet industry.

The drakes that hatched last year have grown up. I wonder: if they breed and grow up at a speed like this, and they ARE trainable for war, maybe I could gather a few hundreds of them, and let all of them loose at the zombies. It would probably deal with our current batch of undead, though the hundreds of reanimated drakes would definitely be a problem afterwards.

We have trained all the drakes and dogs for war, just in case. Meanwhile, the zombies outside are torturing a panda.

A few goblins showed up in three ambush parties, they are killing the undead for now. That's nice and all, but I don't think it'll last, and they will just add to their numbers. Of course, if by some miracle they were to find the necromancer, that could turn the tide.

Autumn, 105
Nothing much happened in the first half of the season. The zombies killed a few wild boars, and we have gem weapons and armor for every remaining dwarf, should the need arise. Meanwhile, work on the cage trap corridor went on and on.

Finally, when it was deemed long enough, I've ordered one of the miners to ramp up to the surface, luring the undead creatures in. That last part went a little too well: before the poor soul could make it safely back in, he was mauled by an undead troll. Apparently, he didn't bother looking around before ramping up, the troll was right next to the newfound entrance.

The zombies started mindlessly funneling into the corridor, it worked like a charm. The first group, I think fifteen or so, were captured without issue. Those were mostly goblins, and a few dwarves, along with the troll that killed the miner... not the worst we have up there, but not bad for a first try.

The rest of the zombies decided to stay safely away for the time, and some of our overenthusiastic dwarves thought that woudl be a good opportunity to reload the cage traps. Obviously, it was not: the zombie elf at the top noticed them, and went in after them. Honestly, that was the fastest zombie I've ever seen - the two mechanics sprinted back down the corridor when they saw the elf corpse, but since  the first 15-20 cage traps were full, the undead had a decent chance of cathing them, which it did. Sure, during the fight, a cage trap finally got it, but not before breaking the leg and hip of one of the mechanics. The other one hauled the injured guy back to the hospital, and that was that.

After that, we've managed to reload all the traps, and group every captured prisoner into one giant cage. We waited a few weeks, but the undead didn't seem to mind us much, at least not enough to take another charge at us.
Then, Meph built a few decoys, and placed them at the turns of the trap corridor. Somehow, that (or the mechanics who placed them) got their attention, and the remaining zombies flocked into the traps as well.

Unfortunately, I calculated that fifty traps would be enough - after all, there were around 60 zombies to begin with, and we caught 14 (I counted since the latest entry) of them with the first wave. Of course, since then, the necromancer raised a few other nasties, namely wild boars, pandas, various body parts. This had predictable results.

Luckily for us, the really nasty ones were caught in the traps, only a zombie wild boar, two goblins, and a few body parts made it in. Those still managed to cripple a few of our farmers (who thought it would be fucking important to harvest plump helmets during a zombie invasion), but Higginbottom led the remaining survivors in a counterattack. With gem weapons, it was brutal, even with a totally untrained 'militia'*. Higginbottom got one of the goblins and a reanimated dwarf leg, the two novice wrestlers ganged up on the other goblin, and the others took care of the small fry, with Higginbottom helping out here and there. There were casualties of course, but honestly, I wasn't expecting all this to go down clean.

All in all, when the dust settled, we had three permantent cripples, one of the wrestlers, Higginbottom, Meph, and one miner. Oh and me, but I don't think ghosts count for much as population goes. Everyone else is dead, the zombies captured or slain, but the necromancer was still out there. Four healthy dwarfs and three hospital patients can't be considered a fortress in my books, so I've ordered the survivors to construct a wagon from the few remaining logs, pack everything valuable they can carry, and leave this hellhole for good. With a bit of luck, they can reach the mountainhomes before they die in the wilderness.

As my last order as overseer, I absolutely forbid the burial of my body. I'll depart this site as a ghost, and try to find myself a new body. I'm sure there's an unconscious soldier somewhere in this world. It would be really nice to join a real group of warriors this time.

*That means every remaining citizen who was not hospitalized

So there we have it. By some miracle, I've found myself a new body (although it troubles me a bit that it's a woman), and tracked down some of my previous crew - what's left of them anyway. We set out to start over, maybe this time with fewer zombies.

Panopticon found us a great place: nice, flat area, river, plants, good soil, and plenty of trees to murder. I'm sure the elves will love that. We started clearing out the future inner courtyard, and I grabbed a pick to dig down. we almost immediately hit a peat layer - that'll be good for farming, but what's even better is a nice supply of pure copper and hematite right off the bat. Good start, I'll say. We dug down a few more urists, mainly just to see what's down there, but decent mining operations have to wait.

First, I've dug out a basic workshop area: a crapenter and mason workshop for starters, but plans are in place for another masonry and a mechanics' workshop as well. Now, I'm working on the food processing area (fancy name, but it's still just a big kitchen) and a dining hall, and the other miner is tasked with carving out the living rooms. Tasked, I say, but she's doing jack shit, which is uncool. Fuck that guy, I'm giving the other pick to Panopticon. At least mining strengthens the arm, and we'll damn well need that.

We are near the end of spring, and thing are looking good. Dining hall is dug out, eight of the rooms as well, and these are bigger rooms than the ones we used to have at the old place. The masons are working on the courtyard wall, but honestly, that's a difficult task, I'm happy if they're finished with it by the end of summer. One thing I've noticed: Higginbottom isn't here. Strange, I was sure he survived the collapse of Angelictower, I'm positive he'll follow us here sooner or later.

At any rate, progress has been better than expected, these lads and gals know their stuff.

Carving out the farming area came with some... well, in hindsight, foreseeable problems. In particular, damn stone. you see, the courtyard has a nice lake at the center, which is nice and all, but it appears to go deeper than expected. Not a functional problem, but aesthetically, this part of the fort won't be as goodlooking as the others.

Higginbottom and Meph have arrived, and with some migrants, no less! Some of these guys seem to be quite useful: master furnace operator and smith, a warrior called Mokar, all in all, a pretty decent much. That brings our population to 14... the things we could achieve...

I love an efficient group of dwarfs. The walls are complete, the bridge is complete, connected to a lever, with a moat and everything - sadly, the moat is empty at the moment, filling it with water/lava will be a job for someone else, I'm sure. Food stores are completely dug out and filled as well, plump helmet farming is going nicely.

(For the record: this is one of my best starts ever. Whoever comes after me: DON'T screw this up. Well, at least do it spectacularly. I'm not done - but the end of autumn, I'll have metalworking set up. By the end of winter, we may have a basic militia partially equipped with iron.)

We've begun iron production. I'm not kidding, the smelters and forges are up and all. At first, we need a fitting weapon for every member of the militia: two swords, two warhammers, a spear and a morningstar. All this in the first autumn. I'm impressed how good these guys can be if they put their hearts into it.

At this rate, I've ordered the barracks, and of course, my personal palace to be dug out. I think I fucking deserve it for such a fucking incredible job. Higginbottom warned be about hubris, but since this new body is so awesome at swordfighting, he quickly shut up.

More migrants! Soldiers, smiths... and a gem setter with her cat. That last one was a bit of a letdown, but the other will be awesome additions to our workforce here. We are destined for greatness! Nubmers are up to 21 by the way. New bedrooms are still being built, but furnishings will be slower this time - most of our energy is devoted to metalworking.

A horse has starved to death. What the fuck, these things require FOOD now? Nonsense, we barely have enough for ourselves. well, we do now, since the horse is dead, but you know wat I mean.

A racoon has stolen a bronze spear. Fuck him, we have iron anyway. To cheer me up, one of the farmers reported that we have honey prodution set up and ready. Only six hives now, so it's not like we're going to supply the whole mountainhomes with mead, but it's a start.

Fuck, the traders are already here. I don't know. We started out incredibly good, but still I don't think we have much to trade. We'll see what they have first. Maybe some gems, our old bronze and copper weaponry... not much. Potentially, we could sell booze, but I1m not risking a riot by giving away precious alcohol for silly things like steel. I quickly ordered two iron greataxes to be forged - those things tend to be pretty valuable. If only the smiths could finish them before the merchants leave...

It doesn't help that one of our carpenters went apeshit, and claimed the only carpenter workshop we have. I'm sure whatever he's making will be nice and all, but... well, I wanted to burn wood, not make trinkets out of it. That sounds like something an elf would do.

First off, I just bought all of their wood supply, in exchange for some of the gems we've mined out. A bargain, really. I'm waiting for a mircale from the forges to afford anything remotely serious. They have some sweet stuff, armor, weapons, a copper golem, a landmine, plenty of food and booze. Nothing special, so I won't be crying if we don't buy anything now. We don1t have a broker anyway, so I'm basically just eyeballing everything - but even this way, I know we can't possibly afford the good stuff.

The carpenter finished his work, a wooden animal trap. Who gives a shit, it's only wood. Meanwhile, the caravan guards are entertaining themselves with murdering small animals. They've already tackled a few racoons, and now a speardwarf is attacking an asp viper. I'm not a tree-hugger or anything, but this is just sad to watch.

(Brace yourself, winter is coming.)
