Another Endtimes Failure
« on: May 27, 2012, 09:10:43 pm »

Came across this old post today by coincidence.
So now this end is the next up, on May 27, 2012.

You know, this Christ fellow keeps changing his mind on when the world will end.  He keeps putting it off, he is quite clearly the world's worst procrastinator.

People keep claiming to speak for the dude, and only end up embarrassing him.

Thursday evening, on May 26, a Palmdale, California woman, 33-year-old Allaire McDougall, allegedly tried to drown her 8-year-old son, telling him it was "the end of the world."

This is why I can't stand charlatan assholes like this guy.

"the end of the world."

The root of "revelation" is reveal. The word apocalypse means to uncover, unconceal, to make known. Thinking in terms of the world "ending" seems to me to be missing the point. One does not mourn that the life of a fetus "ends" when a baby is born.

You'd blame the doomsayer over the attempted murderer?

Both are nutcases, but one's a homicidal nutcase. Guilt's on her own head, not the doomsayer she happened to listen to.

Yeah. Agreed with kaijyuu. She was looking for an excuse I bet. And the end of the world is a perfectly good excuse for murder for most people.

People should just stop putting dates and claim "This is when the world will end and Christ will descend, saving the few selected and leaving everyone else to die".

It's bad for my religion's reputation. I bet the people claiming (obviously) false things haven't read their source material thoroughly.

I have to disagree.

First of all, things like this happen with just about every other apocalypse prediction. There have been numerous cases of people killing themselves and/or family members out of a belief that the end of the world is upon them.

Secondly, even aside from physical violence, there is the much more widespread issue of things like the following occurring:
Quote
Relatives of church members reported family members among Weinland's followers were asking for money to cover "urgent issues" a week before Pentecost, as many had spent their savings in preparation for Christ's return and by donating to the church's warning efforts.
That pattern has repeated itself in many of the apocalypse predictions, and was especially visible with the Harold Camping prediction. By giving all their savings to help pay for warnings about the coming apocalypse, they and their dependents are left pretty much destitute, with their lives ruined. That includes retirement funds, their children's college funds, and pretty much every last penny gone.

If anyone makes a serious apocalypse claim to followers over whom they hold a position of power, they had damn well better be willing to accept at least some responsibility when these results come to pass.

And yet they get away with it. They get away with it to the point where some of them decide to do it all over again a few years later. Of course the followers attempting murder should be fully prosecuted for their acts; but the doomsayers are hardly more innocent.

This. Although it was a while ago, the Great Disappointment was a good example of this.

Silly ideas give birth to more silly ideas? Go figure! :P

Considering they just "interpret the source material" in a different way, they were fully justified in attempted drowning of the 8-year old child. (If you assume the "source material" is valid and open for interpretation, that is)

Even the damn Bible says that no one knows when the end will occur, so one can only wonder what is wrong with these people.

I don't think this is really left open to interpretation. That is some pretty clear language there.

Well, it was likely translated from either Greek or Hebrew to English, so there's a nice little loophole they can jump through there until someone who actually understands those languages comes in and kicks their asses.

That said, it's not like it matters because they're probably wrong anyways. And if, by some abhorrent coincidence, they're right, then no amount of funding and bullshit is going to help matters because there's been so many failed ones.

Tl;dr: They're assholes preying on the gullible, or they're being fairly ignorant regarding their own source material. The only thing that makes these ones special is that they're using a popular religion to prey on stupid people instead of just obnoxious TV ads.
