I always preferred to think that the dwarves put up a valiant fight and greatly weakened the demon. So much so that a single adventurer can strike him down and take all the glory.
Hopefully next version we get to fight him ourselves. Perhaps he's size 25, with a damblock of 50 and fire breath next version? Damn it. Now I have to mod one into current version to see how destructive it is!
EDIT: Heh, I modded one in. Nigh unstoppable. In fact, I'd say the endgame demon would have to be weaker than that, because the only way to kill the fucking thing would be to instagib its head, upper body, or lower body (since I set it so it can't bleed, doesn't need to breathe, and can't feel pain or get stunned)... and that's pretty much impossible with a damblock of 50
Of course, I don't know how well it'd work against a wave of 50 dwarves, 20 of them champions, 20 more are weaponmasters, and every single dwarf has masterfully crafted adamantine armor and weapons. Dwarf forts in adventure mode are seriously weak and I never even saw any weaponmasters.
I beat the hell out of a hydra though.
