A New Zero is a multiplayer vehicle simulation inspired by Red Baron, Tie Fighter, Mechwarrior 2, Joust, and some other stuff. It is currently in open beta.
In A New Zero players control one of many boats and planes. You launch these vehicles from islands you control. The goal is simple, make your enemy lose control over its island(s). In order to reach this goal, you need to trade, build, research, and destroy. It has a simple day/night cycle, and night is pitch black dark, you cannot fly or attack, and it gives you time to regroup. Anyone trying to respawn at night must wait until dawn. Graphics are preternaturally generated, and the whole game is actually under 1Mb in size.
Money can be acquired one of 2 ways. The first way, is trading. You buy goods at one island and sell them at another island. If you bought 8 sets of goods at $4 each, and sell them for $15 each, you make $88. Awesome right? There's more though. Have you noticed how goods seem to disappear from an island? This is because the island sells the goods! When an island sells goods, it goes into a sort of money "stockpile" for your team. Every 2 seconds you receive a sort of paycheck from this stockpile. Those 8 sets of goods you sold to the island are converted into an additional $120 that is dispersed through your team, so you didn't just make $88, you made more for yourself and are helping your team out! This also means that when you aren't trading at all, and nobody is trading, goods are being sold from each island you control for $4 each. If you control 1 island, $4 goes into the stockpile, 2 islands $8, 3 islands $12, 4 islands $16. The more islands you control, the more money you make for your team. The more you trade, the more money you make for yourself AND for your team. You can also cut off your enemies money supply and make it almost impossible for them to continue. If you kill all cargo planes/boats and kill their factories, they can't trade goods to make money, and they cant make goods to trade for money or for their islands to sell to make money.
Girlinhat basically sums up my paragraph in a few sentences. Should really emphasize there: You make money by owning mines and factories, even if you don't use a cargo vehicle, the island will passively make more money by selling its overstock. You can increase the money flow by putting non-native goods on the island.
All stocks on islands slowly lower, because the "city" will buy cargo to represent the civilian sector being active. You can't destroy a city, but you can destroy the commerce around the city and strangle your enemy's cash flow.
All the money you make can be used to... Building is also a large part of A New Zero. If you don't build stuff, you will be extremely hard pressed to win. Islands can have a few things built on them. These things are:
Capitols ($256) - Capitols build influence on the island you build them on. When your influence reaches 3/4, you control the island. This lets you build other things and spawn vehicles from the island.
Mines ($192) - Mines dig up raw materials. They dig the raw materials up slightly faster than a factory can convert raw materials to products.
Factories ($128) - Factories convert raw materials to finished goods. These goods can be traded from one island to another, thus producing you money.
Laboratories ($192) - Laboratories give you 1 research point each, which allow you to uh... research things.
AAA Guns ($128) - AAA Guns automatically attack enemy boats/planes that are within range. They allow you to defend your island while you are busy trading, respawning, or blowing stuff up.
Researching different technologies allows you to buy different planes/boats and use different payloads. Research points are divided equally between team members, so each team member can research different things (though it is suggested you all coordinate research). Things you can research are:
Bombers
1x56kg Bomb for Fighters
1x56kg Missile for Fighters
1x192kg Tallboy for Bombers
Droptank for Fighters
Attack Planes
Missile Ships
4x256kg Peacemakers for Missile Ships
All of these are described in the next section, titled...
Now for the fun stuff eh? Destruction. You have to blow stuff up to win the game. The different vehicles you can use are listed below, as well as payloads, things they can do to cause destruction, and costs.
Cargo Boats $8
Cargo Boat is a boat that has 8 slots for goods.
1x Gun Turret/Cannon Turret
Cargo Planes $16
Cargo Plane is a heavy plane that has 8 slots for goods, its primarily used for trading although some players favor the plane as an easy and cheap ramming device.
No weapons, though you can ram with it.
Gun Boats $32
Gun Boat is a combat vehicle that has dual turrets that can be fitted with either cannons or guns, it is also the only combat vehicle that can trade with its 2 cargo slots.
2x Gun Turrets/Cannon Turrets
Missile Boats $56
Missile boat is a boat that carries 4 non guided missiles with a missile cam and one cannon turret. It has a distance range finder to help aim accurate missile shots at islands. Both the range finder and missile cams can be used in night attacks.
1x Cannon Turret
4x 64kg Missiles
Fighters $63
Fighter is a light weight agile plane equipped with a internal fixed gun turret, it can also be equipped with bombs, missiles or carry additional fuel in a droptank. The fighter is the fastest vehicle in the game.
1x Fixed Gun Turret
1x56kg Bomb -OR- 1x 64kg Missile -OR- 1x Droptank
Bombers $92
Bomber is a heavy plane with a primary role as a base destroyer. It has the ability to carry 4x 56kg Bombs or a 192kg Tallboy which can destroy a capitol in one hit.
4x 56kg Bombs -OR- 1x 192kg Tallboy
Attacks $128
Attack is essentially a heavy fighter, instead of the normal gun turret it fires exploding cannon balls that can easily tear enemies to peices, it can also use one bomb or 2 missiles or a droptank. The Attack is one of the most powerful attacking vehicles (hence the name) due to its flight ability and cannon.
1x Exploding Cannon
1x 56kg Bomb -OR- 2x 64kg Missiles -OR- 1x Droptank
Missile Ships $256
Missile Ship is a huge improved version of the normal missile boat and is slightly bigger and less maneuverable but to make up for this it comes equipped with 16 64kg Missiles, if the missiles are perfectly aimed it can easily destroy 4 bases without re-arming, also with research it can use 4x 254kg Peacemakers which is the most powerful weapon in the game.
16x 64kg Missiles -OR- 4x 254kg Peacemakers
Bombing without getting hit by AAA fire is easier than it looks. I will show you how in this simple 7 (and a half) step guide!
Step 1
Make sure you have researched bombers and tallboys. Tallboys can take out a building as long as you hit said building
Step 2
Get the cash for a bomber.
Step 3
Purchase bomber, and go to the end of the runway. I'm going to now explain all the mumbo jumbo in the bottom left corner to you.
1- Fuel
How much fuel you have left. When it runs all the way out, you stop forward motion and uh... freefall.
2- Throttle
Currently the throttle is completely empty. When you hold W it fills white. Generally this is full.
3- Speedometer
This circle shows your speed. When going forward, the big needle moves in a clockwise motion until it reaches the speed you are going. when going backwards, it moves counterclockwise.
4- Altitude Meter
This circle shows your altitude. The big needle moves clockwise as you gain altitude and counterclockwise as you lose altitude. Every rotation of the big needle causes the small needle to move 1/8 of a rotation.
Step 4
Begin takeoff. The picture below shows you what speed you MUST reach before you can take off. Any lower and you will probably crash into the sea and become a boat.
When the big needle is at roughly 1/4 of a rotation clockwise, you can pitch up and take off. DO NOT PITCH UP TOO QUICKLY! If you do, you will become a boat, or you will simply die.
Step 4.5
You got up in the air? Great! Now head towards your intended target.
Step 5
Heading to the building that will soon be no more? You now need to pitch up and boost (hold shift) until your altitude reaches that of the picture below. The important part is the small needle. Once you are 3/8 of a rotation clockwise with the small needle, AAA fire cannot harm you. IMPORTANT: Make sure you keep around 1/4 to 1/6 of a tank of fuel, or you wont be able to return to base.
Step 6
Engage autopilot (E) and make sure you are lined up with your intended target. You can use A and D to adjust where you are pointed. The adjustments will be much smaller and precise than when you are not in autopilot mode.
Step 7
Hit 2 to go into the bomber view. This shows everything under your plane. You should see a red crosshair. This is where your bomb will land... sort of. If you hit SPACE to release the bomb while the building you want to blow up is right in the middle of your crosshair, the bomb will overshoot the building and explode rather harmlessly. The picture below shows you the optimum point of release.
When the building is at the purple circle on the redishpinkish line, hit SPACE and drop the bomb. If you did everything right, when you return to pilot view (1) you should see the bomb gracefully fall into the building, and see a building destuction hit in chat.
Be aware that if you hit the very edge of a building you may not take out the building core, thus not destroying the building. I also did this in a rather lag free enviroment (ping is 17 for me) so the point of release for you may be farther from the center of the crosshairs. I currently have a server set up on dedicated mode, and it will be 24/7 as long as no unfortunate accidents occur. The playerbase is extremely small currently, partially due to the fact that the creator hasn't update the game in a long time. The next update will have tanks and ground based combat as well as aerial and naval combat. It's an extremely fun game.
