Dungeon Keeper

I'm sorry, did you say Dungeon Keeper?

I'll just leave this here

*whistles innocently*

(For those who would prefer to be spoiled:)
Damn you! It took me three times to finally start reading (after all one of my favorite things is fused with bishoujo anime :D ). Really cool. I was wondering if there is any similar good DK/DK2 fiction.

Oh lord this topic brings back memories.

When I was about 9 my family got a computer for the first time. (A really crappy windows ME install without even coming close to enough RAM) One of my brothers friends gave him a box of old PC games with stuff like SimIsle, SimTower, and Dungeon Keeper. I got so engrossed in it that I used to skip school to play it. (It was 3rd-4th grade, I wasn't missing anything)

I still have the disc, but both my computers are 64-bit Windows 7 so I can't play it and I have no idea how to set up a virtual windows xp. I've still got some XP discs laying around somewhere so I could if I ever learned how.

But back on topic:
Personally I preferred 2 over 1 for one reason: Skirmish. I could set up a sandbox dungeon and pretty much do whatever I wanted. Ah the hours wasted.

Indeed.  I also enjoyed the specific masterwork dungeons or whatever they were called, where you could really go sandboxy.  To the point of having a "toolbox" of heroes that you could pluck from or order assaults from.

However, there is actually a way of playing "skirmish" matches in DK1, you just need to change a config file line (quite simple to do, but I don't remember offhand which one.  The info is out there, somewhere).  It would allow you to start a "multiplayer" map with you as the only player, and it would automatically fill in the other spots with AI bots.

Now, mind, they weren't the brightest of enemies, to the point where it was entirely possible to simply lock them in on a number of maps, but they would actually try their best to defeat you.  Not just passives.

I think that would have to be my biggest complaint about 1: The AI was a moron. Can't tell you how many times the AI's entire dungeon consisted of scattered rooms, half-bulit rooms, and a 50 tile lair for his whole 5 creatures. Probably why later levels pitted you more against a prebuilt hero outpost or did like level 11 (I think?) and just threw you into the half built dungeon and started throwing heroes at you from every direction. I think I only beat that level once without bringing over a level 10 vampire from the previous level.

I kinda wish 2 had a sandbox mode where you could have AI controlled keepers instead of just the Hero Toybox (I don't think that was it's official name, but I like to call it that.) That would have been crazy fun. I also wish I could get 2 to run on my laptop for more than 5 minutes. It runs for anywhere between an hour an indefinitely on my desktop, but my laptop won't work with it for some reason. They're both 64 bit windows 7, but my laptop is home premium whereas my desktop isn't, so that may have something to do with it.

It's true they will. If it weren't for me wasting hours upon hours on TvTropes, I would be rich, famous, successful, and have my own personal harem. Probably. Maybe.

What's this?

That's the TV Tropes website.

It is a maze of twisty little pages, all alike.

TV Tropes Will Ruin Your Life.  Really, ask them!
No I meant what is the Fanfic about?

(Also I just came back from opening up a million tabs in TVtropes.... Unrelated)

Well, it starts with an intelligent, well-read, non-Evil, Heroic schoolgirl from Juuban prefecture, Tokyo entering the Dungeon Keeper world and becoming a Keeper.  Her starting resources are basically her innate magic, a broken Dungeon Heart, and a single traitorous minion, of the most powerful class.

Things escalate from there.  Boy, do they ever.

Oh, just read it.

TV Tropes has ruined my life.

Yes we all understand there are themes/elements that are often reused to help make a story coherent and relatable. Can we please stop acting like TVtropes is the second coming of the messiah and get back to the topic.

On the actual topic; how is the modding scene going? Has there been any obscure projects to bring the game into a more modern environment. The game's graphics have ... aged poorly.

Installed keeperFx yesterday. It really moved quite far (it was very broken, non working when I last tried). Shame that there was nothing new added (or was there?) but as it is an opensource ( sadly hosted on my enemy - SVN) you could theoretically add something (anything?) to it. I imagine graphics would be hard because afaik it uses sprites, so unless you want to redraw (or know who would) each sprite you are out of luck. Theoretically you could use those 8bit upscaling algos. But yeah i would love to add new buildings, traps, units, etc... until it became a new game (sandbox rts :) )

Alright, I'll not read it!

Mainly personal bias, I'm sure it's good for what it is.

Well, while it wasn't strictly modding, I did make a couple custom maps for DK2 back in the day.  One was a dungeon crawler RPG with four playable heroes venturing through a vast dungeon with traps, secret passageways, and bosses for each distinctly themed area.

The other one was a racetrack with slightly modified imps and a few hazards.

Never got around to actually releasing either of these, and they're now lost in the sands of time and old hard drives, but still...  I made 'em!  And they were functional!  Just not completely polished...

Just remembered : One fun - ass part of DK 2 was torturing the heroes until they joined you (as each gateway had a rather strict monster limit, this along with the prison was the only method of growing your army beyond a certain size.)
