Dungeon Keeper
I'm sorry, did you say Dungeon Keeper?
I'll just leave this here
*whistles innocently*
Mmmmyes. Dungeon Keeper Ami is the only Dungeon Keeper-based fanfic worth reading. Every other work I've ever seen has the protagonist going full-bore Look At Me, I'm Powerful and Eeevil. And it turns to crap very quickly.
If you'll excuse me going a leeetle bit further off-topic, there's an Overlord fanfic that's shaping up to be quite the ride. (Overlord's almost Dungeon Keeper, right?) Check out
Overlady, a fusion of Overlord and Familiar of Zero. [Edit:] Also
can be found on the
Pit of Voles.
Back on topic, Dungeon Keeper 1 and 2 under Vista/W7. The standard checklist for getting an old game running includes disabling visual themes it, setting a compatibility mode on it, adding the game to the exception list for DEP (data execution prevention), disabling hardware acceleration globally, and running the game as administrator.
Finally, if your Windows install is 64-bit and the game won't even start, it may be a 16-bit game which is not supported under Win64, so you will need to run it in a virtual machine under a 32-bit Windows install.
Alternately, I just ran across an active project,
KeeperFX, attempting to rewrite parts of the DK1 executable to be more friendly to modern Windows. Give it a shot.
