Lack of invasions
« on: May 26, 2012, 11:34:59 pm »

I've been playing this fort for 20 years. During the first few years there were goblin snatchers and kobold thieves, but since then I've seen neither hide nor hair of either. No ambushes, nothing. I've restricted the population to 20 dwarves period, but even then I should still be getting ambushes, shouldn't I?

You should be, if you have at least 20 dwarves in the fort, and some wealth, which I'd have a hard time believing you didn't have after 20 years.  :o

Check your civilization page, see if your goblin civ has a leader, I guess it's on the fringe of possibility that those snatchers were the last remnants of the goblin civ.  :P

I also just had a human diplomat enter from the surface, hold a meeting, then exit the map via hell.... I guess he thinks he's pretty hardass.

I've currently got 15 million, which should be more than enough.

It's still got a war-leader and a law-giver.

That is exceedingly odd. I usually get ambushes halfway through the second year, and at the latest at some point during the third. Even if the war leader and law giver are the last remaining members of the civ they should still come, even alone.

Is it possible you've somehow embarked with a civ that's at peace with the goblins? If that was so then I doubt you'd get snatchers at all, but I can't be sure.

The exports and imports are still Terror and Vengeance, so I'm pretty sure I'm at war with them.

Then it's a mystery to me. Is it possible they're just chilling out on the surface somewhere? they might just be stealth-camping you, so send a squad out to canvas the surface, see if you can uncover anything.

If that fails, just up your pop cap, and see if you can get sieges.

I think sieges are triggered by, among other factors, a population of 80 (or is it 50?), as I understand with 20 dwarves you shouldn't ever expect a siege unless you once had 50 (or 80) dwarves at some point in the fort.

Ambushes is strange--are you able to access the surface? Are they extinct?  This is a scientific quandry

Thats why I suggest raising the pop cap, see if sieges are still occurring. His civ isn't extinct, as it has a law-giver still present.

I'm at 79 dwarfs, and am three years in. I've not had any snatchers yet, and no goblin invasion. I'm 99% certain I had hostile goblins at embark, but I don't as yet have a goblin civ listed on the civ screen.

Is there anyway to check that goblins are coming, if you've somehow forgotten, or misread what was there when you chose your embark site?

If I can't fight goblins, then I'd want to at least start a ruckus with the elves...but is it true that you can no longer go to war with elves? (34.10).

Those "plugin" races look like fun, but that's for new worlds only, yes? Is there a relatively simple way to add a race, be it a "vanilla" one or a modded one to an existing fortress game?

20 years with 20 dwarves sounds kinda boring.  I say take the initiative.  Invade the circus.
