Vampire withdraws from society
« on: May 26, 2012, 10:57:49 pm »

One of my vampires just got a strange mood. I thought it was kind of funny, especially since he's been locked up in a tiny room for two years. So now he's going to "withdraw from society"?

Actually, I'm tempted to let him out. He's a highly skilled armorsmith, so I'm curious what artifact he'd make. And he'd probably go back into his room with no problem afterwards.

But I'm trying to role-play all this, and I just can't see my dwarves letting a vampire out. (Admittedly, they keep voting one of the vampires mayor!)

Roleplay, eh?

Put a 1-man militia squad to follow him if your roleplaying.

If they keep voting him mayor, either they don't know he's a vampire, or they're too compelled by his supernaturally augmented social graces to care.  Let him out.

The social graces are usually what keeps him as mayor, which is usually how you find that most vamps are mayors.

It would have been more fitting to get a fel mood, but im curious to see what the vampire cooks ups. Does he have a long kill list or any interesting preferences?

Amusingly I'm in the middle of a tantrum spiral with everyone at 0 happiness, and my mayor is ecstatic with several kills on her list. Thought they were just self defence against berserkers but now I'm skeptical. I mean, the only ecstatic dwarf in the middle of a tantrum spiral is beyond suspicious...

Awesome.  He's going to destroy himself and his people wasting time and lives on a paranoid witch hunt, and find out later that there were never any actual vampires.

This is the sort of thing that happens in fantasy books, assuming there are goblins sieging you while all of it is happening.

I could totally see dwarves having a fair amount of respect for the ancient art of going berserk and creating an artifact, though.

"A plan you say?! 'a's wonderful! Let 'im out, quickly now! Gotta see what 'e's gonna make!"

Just remember to magma him once he finishes his artifact, being sober affects the quality so it is pretty much a waste of ressources lletting him live afterwards.

That actually makes a lot of sense, considering that people with moods are so occupied with it that they forget to eat, sleep and even kill enemies.

Put a 1-man militia squad to follow him if you're roleplaying.

I wish I could do that automatically. I'm busy trying to create two long minecart tracks to the very bottom of the map, and I'm not sure I want to mess with this. I'd have to micromanage it...

Hmm,... but I could build a metalsmith's forge in the cell next to him, then knock out the wall. If I waited until he claimed it, I could open the door to let him collect whatever he needed. I might have a hard time getting the artifact out afterwards, but maybe not. Do vampires only attack dwarves who are sleeping?

Incidentally, it's not so much that I'm roleplaying as telling a story. (Here, if you're interested.) I just naturally do this while I'm playing, so I've started writing it up as a history of my fort, just for fun.

Anyway, I try to find a logical reason for everything. My dwarves don't actually know that these are vampires. But I thought it reasonable, after the first few deaths, that they'd start being suspicious of any migrant without a family, so they lock them up to test them (to see if they start dying of thirst).

Likewise, when they vote a vampire mayor, that's just a protest vote against the real mayor. Obviously, that's not what's really happening,... but it could be, right?  :)

Now that you know the vampire's identity, you could just follow him, and if he starts to nom on anyone (will noly happen after the mood), deconstruct the bed. Then lock him up the same way as before.
