Two questions regarding pointy things
« on: May 26, 2012, 11:04:16 am »

First of all, can being stung by a bee kill a creature? If so, I will build a room that can be used to shut invaders inside with thousands of bees. Secondly, can masterwork bone bolts be actually better than copper ones?

From my knowledge (from the wiki), bee stings don't do anything - and they're very infrequent besides. From my experience, a bolt's quality has negligible effect, compared to the other factors of damage - the marksdwarf's skill, etc.

Unless you play a mod where an enemy comes with full body armor or skin that's stronger than the bone you use to make bolts, bone bolts can be just as good as copper ones- IF you make enough. A full marksdwarf squad, each with full quivers, will kick serious ass even with wooden bolts.

beestings cause unhappy thoughts. Since I doubt that's a factor for goblins, I doubt it will work

bone bolts, however well crafted, are less good than metal ones. They don't have the same cutting power, penetration power and weight. That being said, as mentioned above, wood and bone bolts are deadly enough.

I think bee stings inject bee venom. I don't think that that has any effect worth noting on a goblin-sized creature.

Actually they don't. There is no "unhappy to be stung by a bee recently" thought.

You could potentially mod bee venom to cause bad side effects like death, but in vanilla it doesn't really do anything.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

Apparently a bee sting can cause mild nausea and/or pain, but nothing lethal unless they happen to throw up a lung.

Then it happened. Then I cringed. Then I picked it up and beat him to death with it, and then his buddies, too.

Hmmm... Gobbos should have lethal allergic reactions when stung by a bee :D. Regarding the bolts, I noticed that my masterwork yak bone bolts penetrate iron armor too, and when they hit the gobbo's (usually) unarmored limbs, they're as good as my steel ones. I have a serious overabundance of bones you see, and I've been making bolts of them for about 5 fortress years. This has caused my marksdwarves to mainly use bone bolts, even though I have more than enough metal bolts (like 2000 from gobbos and self made too). I realize there are options to make them forget about the bone ones, but I prefer using them first. In my defence strategy, I use archers to just slow the attackers down and to cause them enough pain that they collapse, and then just let the traps and melee soldiers finish them.

Wow! I just found a dead cavy pup in my honey factory, earlier it got stung by a bee. Coincidence? Nope, it didn't starve, since it was somebody's pet and also pastured...

??? Do I have a vampire? Because a trained giant crow was found dead deep in my fort, and yet again no reason was given for this.

Vampires only feed on sleeping dwarves. Something else got the better of your giant crow.

This is creepy... Bunch of other non-grazing animals found dead too. Old age?
