Outpost Liaison
« on: May 26, 2012, 08:20:11 am »

So, I dont' really understand how the "trade agreement" with the liaison works. Is the first screen that pops up the screen where I ask for stuff, and the second what I offer back? Is this a binding agreement? Or is he offering me free stuff? Or does the agreement just affect the prices of stuff, or their quantity? For example, if I asked for metal bars and offered mechanisms in return, would the effects be such that the next cravan would bring more metal bars and with less cost? And would they pay more for my mechanisms?

From what i understand...

First screen is what you want

Second is how much it will cost

Third is what they want and will pay higher rates for.

I could be wrong

Dwarven caravan brings you random items your mountainhomes have. since it is random (I read in devlog once that it is actually based on the profit made earlier, so if you buy all the socks from caravan - caravan will tend to bring more socks.)
It ay happen that you are longing for a bag of sand, and caravan just do not bring one. or an anvil. or wood...

That is why you can modify the probability of caravan bringing you what you want, but that comes at a cost. the items you request in the first dialog with liason will cost up to twice more, depending how high priority you will set.

In the very same way liason informs you what items he would like to see from you the next year.  Items he want to see more will cost more, thus if he says that he will pay double for wooden toys - maybe it is time for some major woodcrafting investment.

The agreement is not binding. you are free not to buy the items you requested and not to sell items that were requested from you.
It is also kind of sad that liason reaches you much sooner then the caravan unpacks, so you are bargaining blindly, not knowing if you really need any stuff next year, or you can buy it this year from the caravan that is on the way to your depot.

While this is absolutely true, it's pretty easy to prevent your leader from meeting with the liaison until you are ready.

I thought 'complained about the draft lately' meant they didn't have a door to their room.

Alrighty. So, because I really don't need anything from the outside (I just buy booze and such if running low) I can pretty safely ignore the meeting and just go with the normal priority levels. Then, a bit off-topic question: how many times can you raid an elven caravan before they send their forces my way? If it's something like once, I could use those pointy-eared bastards as a pretty decent starting boost in my upcoming evli embark.

I'm not sure but I think elves may treat being offered wooden items as more insulting than stealing all their stuff. In any case you will need to do it a lot. I haven't seen an elven diplomat in a long time, but if you get one killing him/her is a good way to trigger an attack.

Perhaps I won't piss them off, since the most recent caravan had stuff like giant eagles. Hard to come by in my current fortress.

elves will pretty much never attack unless you restore the diplomat. Probably because you can't make peace again without diplomat

I stand by my position that I'm happy to let elven caravans have big profits so they bring more exotic animals next time. As it is I have too much thrash anyway, they are welcome to take it away
