Nudist Fort: Possible?
« on: May 26, 2012, 04:40:29 am »

Just what the title says: Is it possible to create a fort in which no dwarf wears clothes, ever, and not have it tantrum-spiral or die to invasions due to lack of armor?

A booze-free fort is hard enough, but I think the bad thoughts from lack of clothing are more severe. On the other hand, you don't get work slowdown.

I'm pretty sure the answer is "yes". Give them enough nice stuff, and dorfs can forgive a lot of things.

And invasions can be avoided pretty easily, once you've got a self-sufficient, enclosed fortress - you can even just wall off the entrance and live underground.

I had a legendary dining room, legendary rooms with solid gold furniture, no deaths whatsoever, engraved everything everywhere with statues lining the halls. And still kids got to 0 happiness in a few months if I didn't make clothing for them.

So in my experience the uncovered thoughts add up very quickly and they are huge hits to happiness. Especially the no pants one.

You could just add the [NOEMOTION] tag to your dwarves or whatever you play with. They will never go above or below "quite content" and also never end up enraged in combat, not that it ever helped anyone I've had enraged.

I would think exceptionally immodest dwarves should get a good thought from running around with no pants.

I suppose having an entire fort full of people who 'cared about nothing anymore' would work.

Modesty in dwarf fortress terms is the opposite of pride, not immodesty.

"Immodest" is "Pride".  Really, people need to read the descriptions.  "He is quick to compare himself favorably to others" is not the same thing as "He likes to run naked".  Reading comprehension.

Although it would make some sense for Urist McHung who's proud of his equipment to want to show it off.  :P

I think it might sorta work if you could arrange for them to get to the "doesn't care about anything anymore" level. With adults you can do this the usual way, by exposing (heh) them to tragedy consistently and making up for it with a cool dining room or something. Kids seem to initially be more fragile though, perhaps arrange to get them one set of clothes which they wear till it rots off, by that time they should have been exposed to enough other stuff to be fairly stable.

Oh, you know, Urist McHung wanting to show off, and because apparently the sight of a bare phallus or female nipple is far more traumatizing than watching someone be gutted right in front of them...

Don't mind me, just an average American fed up with the moronically backwards society I live in, just trying to make a joke and I'm not going to derail the topic into that kind of discussion.

The number of children traumatized by movies, tv, books, video games and such is miniscule compared to those traumatized by close relatives (including parents), I propose a ban on families.

Or dwarven daycare

My quote collection needs a little love. I think this is the perfect addition.
