0_o they sure dont make goblins like they used to
« on: May 25, 2012, 11:20:46 pm »

I just had my first goblin thief of the year. I sent my militia after it, as I knew the farmer who spotted him was a macedwarf, the farmer immidiatly put the bismuth bronze hammer at his belt to use and charged into battle. he chased the goblin for about 7 steps and I am wondering why I look into the combat logs, and this goblin is ducking and weaving around every blow the tenacious dwarf is throwing. the goblin seems to have mastered the fine art of what my brother would call "SERPENTINE! SERPENTINE!." I unpuase and immediately something goes wrong. the dwarf staggers back, flashing red, a serious wound! the goblin has countered! I check the logs again and this is what I see:

In the few seconds between when I unpaused the game and when the goblin lashed out, my macedwarf had not only struck him, my dwarf had struck him what should have been a fatal blow. are they really making goblins out of sterner stuff these days? probably just a glitch, but that goblin should not still be moving.

mace dwarf just died from her injuries.

FYI brain damage isn't always instantly deadly or even incapacitating (in real life), of course the chances of staying competent enough to fight are incredibly slim... (that and a war hammer to the skull sounds like at least a K.O. to me :p)

Did you expect that brain-damaging a goblin would deprive it of any specific vital function?

You know, typically "sure don't make ___ like they used to" implies they make them in a way that breaks more easily (the whole phrase was about how the planned obsolescence of American-made cars greatly impaired their quality and longevity for several decades).

I was expecting a "goblin gets killed by the object they tried to steal falling on them" story...

lol, this is DF, in this sense it means the opposite in that goblins aren't as breakable as they used to be which implies that they aren't as good because they are more sturdy. your fact about the origin of the phrase is interesting. I didnt know that.

I've never seen something surviving "tearing the brain" in DF, though I know that other brain injuries are not always fatal, like in real life. Thieves, both goblin and kobold, can be very dangerous though, especially against single opponents. They may style themselves "thieves", but they are more like thieving assassins, who never miss an opportunity to sell their dagger to a dwarf or a dog. In 1-on-1 battle I'd bet on a thief, unless his opponent was very skilled. Armour is not very important against a dagger. (Besides, I had a gobbo pikeman biting my speardwarf in the heart despite steel armour. I consider it a fluke though.)

Said that, the battle report is from the point of view of the dwarf, I think, so it is possible there were two independent thieves (happens to me quite often, I once had three kobold thieves simultaneously, and it's ever more common for gobbos). The battle report often miss the dying part of the deal.

Is there a difference between master thieves and regular ones? I was going to suggest that maybe it was a master thief and thus better at killing, but it wasn't.

I think master thieves are just harder to spot.

also there was only one goblin on the screen at the time, the first of many. DF just crashed, so maybe Ill get another shot at him. the kobolds are really turning out in force.

Yes, it seems the new models have decoupled life supporting systems from that rarely used brain thing they accidentally included in the last builds.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

One hit, one kill. Saguaro wood training axe. They really DON'T make goblins like they used to. The dwarf was only competent with axes btw, he got a head injury part way through training so had to pull him out.
