Marksdwarves and shields
« on: May 24, 2012, 10:28:03 pm »

Do you guys bother? Does the shield slow down their ability to fire? Can they even carry a shield and use a crossbow? The wiki doesn't seem to know for sure if its one or two handed.

and yes, most people bother. They do sometimes get into melee or need to block bolts and arrows

I always give my crossbowdwarves light shields so they don't impair their movement ability too much while still allowing them to block the occasional arrow or blast of dragonfire.

Yeah, just give them leathern shields. They weigh nothing but can be useful.

I give all my soldiers shields AND bucklers. Why, you ask?

Fuck you, that's why.

I gave my unicorn (In a mod where you play as a race of intelligent horses, unicorns have 2 grips.) an axe, a shield and a crossbow and he couldn't shoot. I didn't have any problems with marksdwarves carrying shields, though.

Crossbows are actually the only weapon that will never get a penalty from being wielded one-handed.  Battleaxes and the like take an accuracy penalty when wielded with a shield by a dwarf that is sufficiently small.  Shields also provide excellent cover from return fire; I highly recommend them for your marksdwarves.

Where did you learn this? I've never seen anyone else state that melee weapons are less accurate when wielded with just one hand.

it was scienced/rawed. It has to do with a combi of creature size and strength. Note that only small or weak dwarfs get that penalty, your average dwarf is of no concern. In human terms it's the difference between a 2 meter tall warrior and a 1m55 clerk trying to use the same axe. You see a similar thing when an average dwarf wields human sized weapons (greataxe)

The Weapon article in the "Size" section shows the size limitations on various weapons and the odds that some dwarves will be able to wield them at all, one-handed, or two-handed.  The "Foreign weapons" section above that mentions, "Using any multigrasp weapon in a single hand (ie. with a shield in the other hand) gives you a disability to hit. Do not equip two-handed swords with a shield, for instance."

Does that count when using a crossbow as a club, or just as a ranged weapon?
