Aldun smiled at the nearly dead halfling, walking up to him. Justice had never been so great, no matter the destruction around him. All that mattered to him was that his wallet would soon be lined with his pay. 'The bastard tried to short me and now he laid in the streets like the dead rat that he is.' He crouched down next to the halfling, "Hey cheapskate, if you want me to drag you out of here you'd better pay up what you owe me. Ten silver and I'll drag you out of this hellhole. If you don't feel like paying I'm sure that the good Sargent will help you die." He was smug, knowing full-well that his former employer was going to be at his mercy. He didn't care about the onlookers, just his pay.

((I have a feeling that I'm about to he hit by someone on horseback.))

Does this mean you're not accepting any more players? I've got a character I'd like to try out. Not adapted for D&D yet, but I can begin filling out his sheet right now.

((We could fit another player I suppose.))

Aldun smiled at the nearly dead halfling, walking up to him. Justice had never been so great, no matter the destruction around him. ((I have a feeling that I'm about to he hit by someone on horseback.))

((Um this doesn't make sense.  The halfing who owes Aldun is Orsi who is currently running away.  The pair of halflings who are lying in the street are just some innocent bystanders.  Aldun doesn't know those two.))

"Good to know the locals aren't afraid of elves. Though I admit I'm accustomed to having a little more personal space than this. Erwin, my faithful escort...who and why exactly are those men taking out their feelings of inadequacy on the halflings? If possible I'd prefer my introduction to Narseus law enforcement not come by way of publicly humiliating them, but that looks like excessive force to me."[/i]

"You could say that my lady," Erwin replies with a surprising hint of venom in his words, "But I say the damn wretches brought this upon themselves.  Marshal Lorsen isn't mad, no matter what the scum say and I suspect that he is looking- Oh please look away my lady, I suspect this is about to get ugly."

((short right now because I got to do some errands.  I'll expand if no one posts by the time I finish.))

Entren Armeni

Seeing the fleeing halfling, Enren cursed quietly. However, a mercenary pulled him over, and Entren realized something- he had to distract the guards. "Hello, good sirs. Could you help me?" he shouts out to the men on horseback who are trying to kill the halfling.

(Leave in the direction of the Radhan estate while Erwin tells me all the things he's told me that he hasn't told me yet. Be obvious that we're walking, not running. Also, again, what are the murmurings of the crowd in regards to the halfling incident?)

((I assumed wrongly that the 'pursued pair' was referring to the pair of halflings in the streets that were struck down and bleeding. Ignore that last post then.))

Aldun Sharp noticed a pair of runners trying to escape the men on horseback, one of them was his employer. He broke into a run after them, knowing that the halfling wouldn't be able to keep up the pace. He smirked as he called up to the halfling, both of them were still running, "Hey Orsi! You'd better pay up what you owe me, or you're going to have worse problems than the men back there." Orsi would know he'd mean business, he always did, so he didn't even bother drawing his blades. When the time was right and he was closer he would draw his blades, but for now he just needed to catch up.

((Diplomacy roll of 9+9 doesn't even come close...))

Enren might have had noble intentions but his efforts don't distract the horsemen for more then a moment.

When the time was right and he was closer he would draw his blades, but for now he just needed to catch up.

The halfling doesn't appear to hear Aldun's words, or at least he doesn't acknowledge them.  But Aldun swiftly gives pursuit and catches up to his former employer outside the gate at the same time the horsemen do.  Orsi's human companion abandons him, trying to look after his own skin and ignoring the plaintive call of his fellow fugitive.

With an agile leap Sargant Regdar decends from his saddle and tackles the halfling from above.  One of his two companions breaks off to pursue the human as the other slows his horse and cuts off Orsi from fleeing any further past the gate.  The small man shows surprising resilience however and manages to scramble free from his pursuers grasp and frantically crawl a few feet away back towards the town where a few of the bolder members of the crowd are watching.  Standing at the front of this audience is Aldun, stading just a few yards away at the town gate.  Aldun hears a commotion behind the crowd.  Apparently more guards are on the way.  The halfling seems to have no chance to escape but his human companion might just be able to flee.

"I see. Erwin, you said when I arrived that this town was not safe for me until you explained the situation. Looking around, this looks like a bad situation to have a paucity of information. Why don't you explain everything while we extricate ourselves from it?"[/i]

Following Aduial's lead, the paid leave the main road and take a side road towards the town's southern gate.  Quite a few others join them in slipping away and Aduial listens to the crowd's chatter.  Most are simply shocked by the events.  A few of the humans share Erwin's distrust of the halflings and complain about how the streets aren't safe anymore.  But while waiting for the foot traffic to clear Aduial does catch an interesting snippet from a pair of dwarves waiting outside a door.
"First to Matouk brothers, then Old Red, now this random merchant, how many innocent halflings do the city guards plan on rounding up?"
"The Matouk brothers and Old Red might have been innocent but I knew that merchant.  Stoutfoot they called him and he was as crooked as they come.  Looks like they've decided to arrest a criminal for a change."
Before the conversation goes any further the door opens and the dwarves disappear out of site.  Aduial walks away into the thinning crowd as she and Erwin reach the southern gate.  As they head west out of the gate, Erwin explains his earlier comments.
"My master is a good man and a fine warrior but his soft heart got the better of him.  There was this... tradesman before a halfling glassworker we had employed named Sayud or Sayt or some halfling gibberish like that.  He was an ungrateful wretch and disrespected Sir Radhan because his mother was elven.  But Sir Radhan didn't seem to mind for reasons I can not comprehend.  When this craftsman became wanted my master insisted that it was all a mistake and headed off into town immediately to try to rescue the useless sod.  I have no clue what got into Sir Radhan's head, he was normally so level headed but he acted as if this were the end of the world.  Well it seems he found the conniving little bastard at the same time the law did and got arrested for his troubles.  And now you are here to rescue Sir Radhan."
"I must express my deepest gratitude for your arrival.  The lady of the house and I have accomplished very little.  I spoke to Marshal Lorsen three days hence and he insisted that my master was being held in comfort but wouldn't allow me to speak to him.  He said that I might allow him to send a message to his co-conspirators.  Or rather... co-cultists.  You see that's what these damn halflings were up to.  When they tracked down Sir Radhan with this Sayad creature they had... well they had a child.  A child from the northern wastes who had strange tattoos and scars who didn't speak a word of sense.  Kept babbling on in some gibberish.  It was deamons of course... it couldn't be anything else.  Marshal Lorson fought their kind back when the orcs invaded and he remembers what they're like.  And now the halflings are in cahoots with them..."
Erwin then subjects his companion to a long and rather creative racist tirade about how halflings are untrustworthy and want to kill off all the humans and elves in any town they live in.  Thus the time passes as they walk back to the Radhan manor.
The lady of the house is with child and has left town for safety.  There is no one else in the manor but Erwin so Aduial has home to herself.  Erwin offers to saddle a horse for her before he heads back into town to retrieve the horse that Aduial left at the western town gate.

((Sorry about the delay everyone.  Me and my girl were up late last night watching My Little Pony, if you know what I mean.))

Aldun cursed under his breath. Orsi would be dead within minutes, and the guards would have nothing of his story. He'd have to get his silver back another way. He decided to chase after Orsi's companion. Even if she didn't know about the deal he'd get his five silver yet, even if it meant killing her. He had a reputation to keep, and he wasn't about to let it slip because of a few rogue town guards. He turned to the companion that was escaping and started after her. If she could get out of the town he could threaten her for his promised silver. It was the only way he'd be able to save face now.

Chase after the companion.

Aduial

I pen the following letter:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

 * Seal it with my signet ring and have a servant who is not Erwin deliver it to Marshal Lorsen with instructions to return any response to me.
 * Pull Erwin aside and explain that in order to free his liege it will be helpful if I'm able to first gain Marshal Lorsen's trust. Explain that the purpose of the letter (without showing him the contents) is to inform Lorsen that I am here to investigate the baron rather than to petition on his behalf. It will be far more convincing if a hostile investigator concludes he is innocent than a friend, therefore I will play the role of hostile investigator. Instruct Erwin that if anyone asks about me or my purpose here, that he is to seem very worried and act like he's afraid of me, but claim that he's been forbidden to speak in detail.
 * Ask to be shown the Baron's private study. Once Erwin leaves to get my horse, search the place. In particular looking for books, notes, letters and other written materials. Spellbook would be awesome, but steamy love letters, land deeds or financial reports would be fine too.
 * If I don't find anything of interest, hang out and paint my nails until sundown.

((OP is updated with some information on prices that LordBucket requested.  In line with that, here are your characters starting cash:
Enren the wandering bard: 23 bits
Aldun the mercenary who just finished a lucrative job: 3 shields, owed 5 more
Aduial the noblewoman: 24 shields on her person, jewelry worth 20 banners, undetermined savings at the capital, a yearly retainer from the crown of 5 banners, it's good to be nobility.))

Aldun cursed under his breath. Orsi would be dead within minutes, and the guards would have nothing of his story. He'd have to get his silver back another way. He decided to chase after Orsi's companion. Even if she didn't know about the deal he'd get his five silver yet, even if it meant killing her. Chase after the companion.

Alden slips away from the town gate without trouble and chases after the horseman and human fugitive.  The fugitive leads them into a patch of fallow farmland that lies outside the town.  He scrambles through a patch of overgrown bushes and down and up an old ditch, gaining some room while the horseman breaks off and peels around.  Alden, still feeling fresh closes the gap on the winded runner and easily manages to avoid detection from either party.  As the fugitive crosses the field, eyes anxiously scanning for the horseman Alden slips bye a couple of rows away and draws to within 60 feet of the man.  At the end of the row there is another row of bushes.  The fugitive scrambles behind it and breathes heavily.  On the other side of the bushes stands the horseman, dismounted and looking around for his quarry, ready to apprehend him as soon as he break out of the field.  Behind the horseman lies another field like the one Alden and the fugitive are hiding in but with a wide gap separating the two.  Beyond that lies a grove of trees and the promise of freedom.
Alden comes up to the row of bushes, perhaps a little less gracefully then his normal stealthy nature but unnoticed by either party all the same.  There is a lull as the man catches his breath while his pursuer continues to scan the field, trying to find him.

------------------

Meanwhile back at the town gate the halfling gets seized and roughed up a bit for his troubles.  Once held down and kicked a few times his hands are bound and he is  tossed across the back of one of the horses and taken back to the center of town.

Wincing at the rough treatment of the halfling, Entren sighed and resignedly went to look for a reputable-looking tavern. There really wasn't much he could do for the halfling by this point.

Erwin departs to retrieve Aduial's horse, leaving her in peace to the masters study.  She pens the letter and gives it to the bondsmen's son who acts as stablehand, the only servant she can find in this humble estate.

Her search of the study reveals in short order that Baron Radhan is not a great scholar.  Although he has some books in his study his collection is unimpressive, just some common information about the gods, old kings and the heroes of the realm.  The only thing of any note is the two volume Radhan family history.  The books look to be quite old and well maintained and have probably been in the family for a couple generations or longer.  Sir Padros Radhan's personal correspondence compliments this impression of a simple man.  His letters are short and are full of misspellings.  Most of the letters in the study are correspondence between his wife and himself while one or the other was away.  Her literacy seems to be a bit more advanced than his.  They both seem to be fond of each other.  There are the yearly lists of bondsmen and yeomen contracts.  It seems that the Radhan estate was only employing about 15 peasants on average.  There are no notes from moneylenders so they must have gotten by with frugal living.  There are a few invoices twined together but you find none mentioning the halfling Sayad (or any glassworking).  A letter with the seal of the city of Narseus catches your eye.  It was written by the Marshal Lorsen, who was at that point only a sheriff of the town.  Sheriff Lorsen thanked Padros for speaking so highly to the town council about his leadership in the orcish invasion.  Lorsen mentions time the two men spent together during the campaign and seems to have regarded Padros as a brother in arm back then.
Having exhausted the writings of the house of Radhan it seems less then an hour has passed from when Erwin left.  Aduial peruses the family history briefly but very rapidly loses interest when reading the first volume.

As this task winds up Erwin enters the room and informs Aduial that a reply to her letter has arrived and that he has prepared a humble meal for her.

Spoiler: "The Marshal's Letter" (click to show/hide)

As Aduial eats what Erwin has prepared and sips at a glass of wine another letter arrives.

Spoiler: "The Mayor's Letter." (click to show/hide)

Many hours later, after the sun had set, a third letter would arrive by yet another courier.  ((assuming that Aduial is still around.))

((Btw, I missed this before but Aduial is still a librarian?  That's a bit unusual as it would indicate a truncated education.  Or is that intentional?))

Wincing at the rough treatment of the halfling, Entren sighed and resignedly went to look for a reputable-looking tavern. There really wasn't much he could do for the halfling by this point.

Entren heads to the Screaming Viking, a tavern where he used to be a regular.  He pushes open the door and is greeted by a shout of "Entren!" from the regular patrons of the tavern.
"Why howdy there Entren, glad to see you again." says Holzig, the cheerful and down to earth bartender.  "You want me to get you something to drink or were you figuring you wanted to play some of that music of yours?"

No, she would be of the journeyman rank. I just didn't know what else to call her since she was involved with the school for 30 years, but was neither alumni nor a "master" wizard, and "postgraduate slacker who hangs out there and does stuff that's useful" somehow didn't quite have the sound I was looking for.

Sir Theon Alexandrus, Guild Magistrate of Narseus

((assuming that Aduial is still around.))

I probably wouldn't have been there to receive that third letter. But who is that? Magistrate of which guild?

Quote
after the sun had set

Aduial
"Thank you for your assistence, Erwin. Marshal Lorsen has agreed to speak with me, but it seems that both he and the mayor are reluctant to allow me to see the baron myself. I'm unsure why. You mentioned that he was acting not at all like himself, acting like it was the end of the world when this halfling was arrested. I'm beginning to wonder why. I may have alternate sources of information that I'd like to investigate. I might be returning late night. Please don't feel the need to wait up for me."

Remove jewelry, and put it in my pack. Stash it somewhere in my room that is unlikely to be found through casual ransacking or cleaning. Take clothes, weapons, coinpurse and 6 silver shields, and try to find a money changer to convert one silver shield into bits. Put money in coinpurse inside my clothes beneath my left breast.

Then go looking for the local thieves guild.

Assuming I find it, do the following:

 * Introduce myself. Explain that I'll be operating in the city for perhaps the next month or so, and that I'd like to register on the guild roster and pay any appropriate dues.
 * "Hang out" and talk to people for an hour or so. Be friendly. Spar if anyone's interested. Make myself known so as to establish that I'm not a valid target.
 * Listen for rumors. Ask about the halflings and recent events. What's the perspective of the underground on all this?
 * Make discrete inquiries as to the relationship between the guild and the authorities. Are the Marshal and Mayor receiving kickbacks from the guild? Or are they paying the guild? Or is the guild completely underground because the law is too honest to deal with them? Where does the power lie in the relationship?
 * Make discrete inquiries as to who and how much I'd be have to pay to arrange for a jailbreak. Make no mention of the baron.

((I'm not exactly sure what non-criminal function a thieves guild would serve so if any exist you'd need to have local criminal contacts to find such place.))
