Hunter cancels Hunt: No ammo

My hunters keep saying this, and it infuriates me that they forbid each bolt fired. Anything that can help?

in (o)rders, then I think (F)orbid, you can toggle if dwarves collect dead bodies, the gear they were wearing and fired bolts

also, make bone bolts

to unforbid all bolts fired before, go to z - stocks, assuming you got some detail in the records, you can unforbid bolts here

One oddity I noticed, that if a bolt is fired, and not destroyed, the archer will try to collect it, before any others. This messes up marksdwarves also. The undestroyed bolt will have a parenthesis, in this state its in a limbo. To solve, just mark wooden/bone/metal bolts for dumping in a atom smasher. Once destroyed, the archers/marksdwarves will reload bolts. Another oddity, claiming them does not seem to work, only their destruction clears them from inventory. In simpler terms, look for bolts still on the map, destroy them.

if you don't like seeing the message then you can disable that specific announcement in init>announcements. All announcements are highly customizable; you can set the game to never notify you about anything ever, all the way up to having the game pause and give you a siege-type boxed message every time a dwarf stands up.

The only thing that will help long term is to create more bolts. LOTS more bolts. Most bolts fired are lost, only bolts that change z-levels are recoverable. Hunters can NOT just pick up their used bolts and try again. Even if more bolts survived being fired, the time spent picking up bolts would take away from time spent hunting. Make more bolts.

It's pretty trivial to have an absurd number of bone bolts if you have any breeding animals.  Best use of bones, in my opinion.

re-using fired bolts is going to make that message come up MORE since they will fill a quiver with a single bolt.

is that limited to hunters? I've had marksdwarfs put lots of single bolts in one quiver

Maybe things have been changed in recent releases. Can you put up a screenshot, Garath? I've never noticed multiple stacks in a quiver before, but then, I never let my dwarves waste their time picking up single bolts.

I don't have a screenshot, but yes, dwarves will put multiple single bolts and partial stacks in the same quiver. This is especially noticeable if you use bone bolts since they are generated in stacks of 5.

ah, found one with 4 stacks of 5 bone bolts and 3 one bolt stack of copper bolt(s)

I figured out why he had so few bolts though - I had set the bolts allowed for his squad too low
