What the Heck?
« on: May 24, 2012, 06:37:27 pm »

I have a dwarf with this in his thoughts and prefs page:

Cravings or urges of what?
Also, all of my dwarves were huddled around the wagon like a swarm of bees, then it said "Snatcher! Protect the children!" which I guess appeared by the wagon, because all of a sudden they EXPLODED away, and it was funny.

Gameplay-wise I don't think that part of his personality will affect anything. Regarding what is they crave or urge, it's probably socks.

You probably haven't been playing for long if you are suprised by dwarfs running away in panic from a hostile. They'll do that for anything non-friendly, be it a goblin or a capybara.

Actually, the "doesn't often experience strong cravings or urges" means he'll be a bad choice for doctor, as he would rather sit around the meeting hall instead of go help the guy that has two broken legs, a punctured lung and a missing eye, despite the hospital being on the other side of the wall he's resting against.

Isn't it just the lazy/active traits and likes/doesn't like helping others traits that affect doctors?

I also just had a human diplomat enter from the surface, hold a meeting, then exit the map via hell.... I guess he thinks he's pretty hardass.

There are a few others, but those are the big ones from what I understand.

he might be a good noble since it sounds like that would cut down on his rate of demands

From what I know this type of personality only affects length and frequency of breaks. This dwarf will take shorter and less frequent breaks.

It has nothing to do with doctor skills, in fact he'd make a great doctor as he wouldn't be 'On Break' when Urist McPorcupine comes in after the bow wielding kobold ambush.

I have a dwarf with this in his thoughts and prefs page:

Cravings or urges of what?

A quick search of the wiki shows that it comes from the "IMMODERATION" Personality trait.  An older wiki entry suggests that it affects the odds of the creature being a drunk in adventurer mode.  So I'd guess it's cravings or urges to overindulge in things like alcohol (which would explain shorter breaks, I suppose).

I'm not sure if it affects anything else though.

The only good noble is a dead noble.

"we're low on booze, can we get the manager to set 60 brew jobs?"
"You ordered him killed, remember, it's a noble."
"Damn. How much booze do we have left? Urist is about to go on a rampage if he doesn't get a drink."
"Bookkeeper, noble, what more can I say."
"Oh well, we better get the hospital in order. Who's in charge of that?"
"A noble."
"Damn. Who's in charge right now, we got to fix this!"
"That'd be the baron or the mayor, but, well..."
"Don't say it, they're noble positions."

etc.

I understand hating nobles is a tradition from the version of ancient times, but in this day and age some of it is unwarranted. Especially if you choose your baron right.

Or not choose any baron at all.

As for urges, these with high value have breaks more often, and seemingly also drink or eat often - my dwarves with high Urge have at least two or three thoughts related to drinking or feasting. One thought doesn't have time to wear off before they eat or drink again. As a result, these with higher Urge seem to be happier, unless on long duty in military.

A good noble is one with a magma powered "heating" system fitted to their rooms. The temperature can be turned up remotely if they so "mandate" it.

One doesn't really need a manager to make booze, you know. And I was talking about barons and such, not about the administrators.
