Is it sick or disturbed that I am trying to create a coliseum to get various wild animals to fight each other after being caged trying to get into my fort?

It'd be better (game-wise)/worse (moral-wise) if you made your dwarves fight them with training weapons and good armor for the combat training.

Depends on your definition of disturbed,  I often force animalmen to fight with goblins in the pits whenever I embark on savage biomes.  The survivors are given the honor of a quick slow and painful death by my greenhorn army recruits.  If any are lucky, they'll make it out the front gate to get caught in a cage trap and start the process all over again.

I don't do this.  I can never quite get the creatures to fight each other.  Dwarf Vs Animal, sure, but it's hard to get animals to fight other animals.

Dump 50 nanny goats into an enclosed space, and read the combat logs. Pretty much the same thing.

I'm evil. I accidentally trapped a dwarf in the coliseum while building it, and forgot about her :( Her husband is in my military so I have to be careful he doesn't tantrum. Of course, I could just show him some masterwork, that tends to cheer them up.

You're new here, aren't you. Just smooth and engrave the communal dining hall, that usually makes the buggers too ecstatic to mind if their spouses get offed.

"My wife died, now I'm so unhappy I'll kill myself. Oooh, nice statue, let's get something to drink."

and you truly must be new to the forum if you think you're disturbed for making an arena. You ain't seen nothing yet, the the dwarven daycare is a horrible glorious example of cruelty inventiveness

small hint: try to avoid double posting, use the modify button instead

Dwarves don't go suicidal.  They go homicidal.

...
The odd thing here is that you play dwarf fortress and think that having a stadium is odd.
...
I built one before knowing it was common but assumed it was common as it's quite a dwarfish thing.
I think i need to see a psychiatrist about this.

We just need to get Toady to embed a Lisp interpreter into DF.  Learning lambda calculus in order to play the game wouldn't make DF's learning curve much steeper.

Three things;

You likely don't need a shrink. (Not actual advice.)

Making an arena or whatever is common. How else is it best to test how things die how? (e.g. Does my Ultimate Fire Sword of Annoyance really hurt that Electrically Charged Book of Bitchslapping. [Insert whatever game terms you need.] {I play none of the games where super-ultra-mega Japanese sounding weaps are available, so I just threw that all in there. And I LOVE Japan, so just deal with super-ultra-mega.}

The designing and executing of things to kill other things is not exclusive to dorfs. Nor are over-complicated ways to do said same. As far as I can tell, though, designing over-complicated things to be used to kill things while pondering whether you need a shrink or more advice from the forum that contains - well, us - might be reason for a shrink - and it makes you as dorfy as can be unless you have a BEARD (not beard.) (I did tell you that the above was not advice. I chose to change my mind.)

Well, that's my 2/100 Urists.
