Error building Magma workshops/furnace, can select but not place.

I just started a fortress and am new to this, and am encountering a problem where I am unable to build more magma based buildings other than my magma smelter. I am able to select the buildings under the d menu, but when I attempt to place them along the channel I have for magma further down from the smelter it says that it is blocked by another construction, despite it being an open area. Is this me building things wrong, a bug, or working as intended?

sorry to say, but most likely you are doing something wrong. Are you sure there is no overlap with the other workshop? if some x's from the 'blueprint' are red and the others purple, the red ones are blocked. When you then cancel and check the area with k, q and t, what does it say? Can you post some screenshots?

I will post an image when I am home in a few hours. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something really obvious/simple.

you probably are missing something obvious. I know I'm cynical, but that's my experience from most questions, but don't worry, everybody has that problem sometimes. For example, I was shouting at my dwarfs recently to collect webs underground, but I got a lot of inaccessible spams. I had forgotten to open the gate.

I figured it out, I had designated a stockpile over the area I was intending to build and forgotten about it (and couldn't see it as it was covered in orthoclase), and now things work. Thanks!

Hopefully successfully repel my first goblin invasion, but that is an entirely different matter.

Build a grinder, entrance has a drawbridge, exit has a drawbridge, restrain a animal near the exit. Between the exit and entrance build a line of traps to grind up any gobbos pathing to the bait, or if materials are scarce, drown them.:)
