Do doors block magma?
« on: May 24, 2012, 09:28:43 am »

Do doors block magma (if they are magma safe) or do I need to build a closed flood gate to block magma? I say this because I plan on building a pump stack and have to wonder about how to get the dwarfs out of the stack when building it and still block the magma from flooding the stack.

Yes, all constructed doors (and walls) can block magma.  After my miner gets out, I lock the door and wall it in for extra security.

If a dwarf opens it by some reason, does magma come through?

Also, can a single dwarf manually pump the stack or do I need to setup wind power on the surface?

A dwarf can operate a pump, but he can't transmit power through a pump stack.  You would need a dwarf for every pump to run a pump stack manually... not a good idea.

When I build a pump stack I cut out the housing triple wide.  Dwarves move and dig through the extra space, and when it's completed, I seal the pump stack completely with constructed walls, and the dwarves exit through the remaining empty row of space.  You needn't use walls that cover the passable tile, impassable tile, intake and output like I do, if there's no gap around the impassible (dark) tile including diagonals, magma can't leak.  I just wall off the whole thing to cover my own ass in case of a screwup.

A windmill might not be best suited for your needs.  If you're playing with pumps anyway, why not consider a water reactor?

If the door opens, magma flows through as if the door was open space.  If the door is not magma-safe, this will destroy the door, otherwise the magma flow will be cut off when the door closes.

I'm fine building windmills. Would a single windmill (or waterwheel since I have a river) power the stack or would I have to build large windmill farm to produce energy?

Also, when I build the stacks I know I have to build channels out to build the pump on top of each other. Do I need to gear assemblies between each screw pump or when they are on top of each other will they automatically transmit power?

waterwheels give more power (and can be set up to circulate some water in a perpetummobile device),
but windmills can be used in a more epic set up, thou they give only a fraction of waterwheels power (dependant on map, but usualy 20-40)

imagine a windmill farm, 15levels above ground, supported only on its drivetrain (gears and axels)
-a note on dwarf tech: theres nothing 'wrong' with 20 windmills standing on a spining vertical axels, its just mindbogling, but remember; dwarfworld aint roundworld

Do I need to build gear assemblies on the windmills or will just stacking them on top of each other automatically push power through them?

interesting idea, must say i never tried it
as much as i recall, a mill needs a gear in the middle of it,1 z level below it (i think it used to be the only way, but stuff might have changed)

needs testing to confirm, but i cant be bothered for the next 4h, ill do it then if noone else will report by then

windmills need their central tile open to the sky. building another windmill on top cancels that, so will make the lower windmill useless, afaik

Will building a windmill next to a windmill make it combine power then?

i dont think so, each needs a centraly placed gear or axel 1 z level below it to work... gona test in 10 min thou, will report after that

true, and i just did

in a way i hate speculations that make me want to test stuff out to see that it doesnt work

on the other hand i learn the most by testing strange/unusual/stupid ideas from people who rather discuss things than try them out by themselves:D

so
windmills
this says it all:
http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/Windmill

if it aint clear enough, ill rephrase

windmills only transfer power to their central z-1 tile and need the tile above their central tile clear (its center tile must have the "outside" attribute)

...
we got far from the doors/magma question thou
