A creature that is there purely to be an annoyance.

An idea I had once but it didn't really work: The Little Heathen.

It has naturally high ambusher, as well as [MISCHEVIOUS], [CURIOUSBEAST_GUZZLER] [CURIOUSBEAST_ITEM] and naturally high Dodging skill.

But it's very frail.

It should be very dangerous to forts with say... a floodgate being held back by a lever, or to forts suffering from booze withdrawal.

Just a note here, but you could turn off weather with the init setting [WEATHER:NO]. So if you prepackaged the mod or just included it in the installation instructions then that could make it seem a little more like an underground world.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

Salamanders could be done in.
maybe cave leviathans as something that inhabits the deepest lakes, far beneath the world
plants that can extract metal from the rock so can be processed into ore or fragments that must be melted down?

but yeah, seems like a great idea, with potential to put in some insanely cool stuff

A different color scheme will help immensely as well, have a look at vherids sets, maybe take something darker/brown looking. Then, as i2amroy said, turning of the weather is a good idea, getting rid of all the surface animals, using custom tiles for grass/floor fungus, taking only fungiwood/mushrooms as trees/plants, maybe recoloring the water...

Do you plan on a Total Conversion, or should it still feel like DF, just more underground ?

I've done a fair bit of modding pre 32... .so I need to relearn things but I'd be happy to start off re-learning by helping you :p  So yea... list of potential new creatures/plants/ect?  Or what meph said, do you just want this to be DF underground?

Well, for starters, giant versions of all the existing cave vermin.  Giant cave lobsters, giant cap hoppers, giant purring maggots (which can be domesticated and milked, of course!)
Some more slimy blobs would be nice.  Maybe borrow from the 'blobs, slimes, and jellies' mod.
Regular critters with 'naked mole' or 'blind cave' variations.
Things with tentacles.  Lots and lots of things with tentacles.
Dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures.  'Cause fossils are underground.  Or something.
Tarrasque would make an excellent megabeast.

I did some research to find some real-life cave-dwelling creatures.  Most are tiny and kind of boring, but we need some creature variation to add color to the world.  Metaphorically speaking, as most of them are colorless.  Giant variants could be fun.

Pseudoscorpion!  A cave-dwelling spider-like creature that injects paralytic venom through its scorpion-like pincers, spins webs from its mouth, and spits corrosive fluid to pre-digest its prey.  We've got to have this, no question.  And a giant version of course.
Phantom cave snail.  Nothing too special about it, but you've got to like the name.
Various aquatic cave snails.
Cave shrimp.
Cave spide...nevermind.
Blind cave millipede (herbivore).
Cave centipede (carnivore).
Cave moth.
Cave grasshopper (predatory!)
Leptodirus hochenwartii, or simply 'cave beetle' (a scavenger, so [VERMIN_ROTTER] tag).
Anophthalmus hitleri, or 'blind cave beetle'.  A predator.  Yes, the scientific name is intentional.
Springtail, an insect with a long tail that it uses to jump.
Waterfall climbing cave fish.  A rare freshwater fish that can grapple terrain with its fins and climb walls.
Pupfish.  Freshwater or brackishwater fish.
Blind cave catfish.  Freshwater fish with tiny, probably functionless eyes, can breathe air.
Blind cave tetra.  Freshwater, eyeless.
Blind cave loach.  Freshwater.
Cave knifefish.  Freshwater or brackishwater.  Generates a weak electric field, but only for navigation, not a weapon.  No knives either.  What a shame.
Cave eel.  (not technically eels, but meh)
(all of these fish are small)

Oh, and four words:

Plump.  Helmet.  Man.
Civilization.

What about the Scutigeramorpha?

Imagine a centipede, but much bigger and has all these tendrils from its bodym as well as an agonisingly painful bite.

That is one scary Mother... I'm fine with most bugs, by centepedes give me the willies. Hell even a spider seems tame compared to those, altho camel spiders are freaky as hell too.

Camel spiders only danger is their powerful fangs, that can often cause quite large wounds. Oh, and the bacteria on those fangs.

Camel spiders definitely have to go in.
I'd love to see the Scutigeramorpha in too.

I know there's a bee-esque creature, but what about the Tarantula Hawk Wasp? Known as the Tarantula Hawk in the same way that Chicken Hawks are called that because they take on chickens, the Tarantula Hawk Wasp preys on tarantulas.
It stings them with a venom powerful enough to completely paralyse the spider, then drags it back to its lair.
This venom, on humans, is not paralysing, but a sting is considered the second most painful thing in the world. The pain is enormous, like someone is holding a lit match to your hand and not letting go.

Also, Tarantula hawk wasps are dorfy, because they often get drunk on fermented fruit and become unable to fly due to inebriation.

Quote from:
The tarantula hawk is relatively docile and rarely stings without provocation. However the sting, particularly of Pepsis formosa, is among the most painful of any insect, though the intense pain only lasts for about 3 minutes.[3] Commenting on his own experience, one researcher described the pain as "…immediate, excruciating pain that simply shuts down one's ability to do anything, except, perhaps, scream. Mental discipline simply does not work in these situations."[2] In terms of scale, the wasp's sting is rated near the top of the Schmidt Sting Pain Index, second only to that of the bullet ant and is described by Schmidt as "blinding, fierce [and] shockingly electric".[4] Because of their extremely large stingers, very few animals are able to eat them; one of the few animals that can is the roadrunner.

That's how dangerous normal sized THWasps are. Imagine a giant one. Paralysing and painful venom.

If we're going with super dangerous creatures, I've got some more ideas.

What about a land dwelling Malo kingi? They're barely bigger than a human thumbnail, but their venom induces a syndrome that among other effects:

  • At first, feels like nothing more than a mosquito bite.
  • In the following 5 - 120 minutes (30 on average) the symptoms appear and begin to ramp up very strongly in pain.
  • The symptoms: Headache, backache, muscle pains, chest and abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, sweating, anxiety, hypertension, tachycardia and pulmonary oedema.
  • Another interesting effect is it also induces the feeling of 'impending doom', that people suffering from Irukandji Syndrome have been so sure they're going to die that they BEG THEIR DOCTORS TO KILL THEM.
  • These symptoms usually disappear after ~4 hours, but can last as long as TWO WEEKS.
  • The freakiest part is: You can pass out from the pain, and be on the maximum tolerable dose possible of morphine, and still be thrashing about and screaming hoarsely. WHILE UNCONSCIOUS.
  • A woman stung described the pain as this: "Imagine the absolute highest, zenith of pain of a contraction during childbirth. Irukandji STARTS from that and builds."

How're those ideas?

Camel spiders only danger is their powerful fangs, that can often cause quite large wounds. Oh, and the bacteria on those fangs.

So like humans then? :P

Also, if you like I can offer up my Anomalocaris raws, though I can't figure out why it suffocates shortly after coming into being (while it doesn't have lungs, all of its swimming lobes are meant to act as gills, but it just dies anyway)

Anomalocaris is basically a giant vaguely shrimp like predator that had near unparalleled vision that preyed on trilobites by grasping them and tearing them apart.
