Sleeping on a frozen ocean in a blizzard... (V0.31.25)
« on: May 23, 2012, 04:28:42 pm »

Does anyone have any idea why, when I spent a few days alternately sleeping and waiting a good distance out on a frozen ocean during a howling blizzard, I woke up in the depths of hell as a snow specter?
It seems now that anytime I sleep I end up in the fast travel screen, then morph into something else when I leave it.
It's the vanilla version of 0.31.25 that came with the Lazy Newb Pack.

Basically, is it going to cause a problem, or should I just keep wandering around until I (hopefully) end up as a forgotten beast? ;)

Congratulations! You have discovered how to perform the Quantum Leap bug! From what I've heard, it makes you turn into the closest creature next to you when you come out of fast travel. Keep doing it to see what you will turn into.  :D

You have discovered one of the greatest DF bugs to never be fixed, and hopefully never will.

Have fun.

Because I'm too lazy to not use Dwarf Therapist, which when I last checked isn't updated for the latest version yet ;)

I guess the next two important questions are:
1. What's the report number on the bug report for that, if any?
2. Anyone know how to shoot webbing as a giant cave spider?

Eh?  Best check again :)
Therapist had an update posted go from 34.09 to 34.10 before I had even heard 10 was available.

I think you can shoot webbing via the crafting > interactions menu. Assuming you're playing post 31.25.

Does this bug work in .34.10? I've been sleeping on a frozen ocean for a while now and it hasn't happened. Perhaps I'm doing it wrong?

EDIT: Dear god..I was running along, then suddenly, a massive lagspike. After the game recovers there was a massive structure of ice right behind me. It seems to span very far in two directions. If I build a campfire next to it, the wall of ice melts, the campfire falls into the ocean, then the wall regrows outwards where it melted.

Perhaps the bug has something to do with this. Getting encased in ice while sleeping...

Either that, via drowning, or via getting killed by wild creature (unlikely).

But that's what most of us think is the cause of this body surf bug.

Are there any other cases where, when you travel, you stay as the creature you were instead of becoming whatever is nearby?
I eventually despaired of finding the surface as a giant cave spider, and two jumps later suddenly found myself in the middle of a hut full of humans. As the same giant cave spider. Needless to say, (fatal[to me]) hilarity ensued.

Quote
05/31/2012 Toady One Here are the last changes for the month.

    cleared kill orders after completion
made armor stop lack of clothing thoughts
added ability to set up generic armor options in uniforms (like the ones the defaults have)
stopped dwarves from looping between civ/squad equipment if they can't follow their orders
stopped aspects of the game from advancing when designations were placed
stopped adventurer from turning into an underground creature when in the ocean/etc.

Does that mean what I think it means, and he's getting rid of quantum leaping? :(
