I never expected to have friends, I never expected to lose them (ok, that last one's not strictly speaking true). I never expected to have a dog that would be mauled to death by coyotes, and I didn't expect the shock when it finally set in... What else?

Never expected to live past 30. Seriously...I was convinced I was either going to drink myself to death or get killed by mouthing off to the wrong person by age 30.

Never expected to regret not joining the military. As an officer's son with test scores out the yin-yang, I coulda gotten into a service academy realtively easily. Would have been a disaster then. Now.....I think I'd do quite well.

Never expected to spend my entire working career doing something other than what I went to school for. I mean, I expected to have to do some odd jobs before getting set in my career path. But instead I came out with one real marketable skillset, and I've wound up just milking that shit for all its worth, even as I loathe doing it for a living and feel a tiny piece of me die each day I continue in it.

I never expected my girlfriend at the time from following me to another country. I never expected her to save my life. Before that, I never expected to marry her - or anyone.

I never expected to become a reserve officer in the branch of my choice and to score over 3,000 meters in a cooper test. Considering my pre-service situation those things seemed far from possible. I'm not proud by nature but if I've ever felt pride it was then.

Never expected to be in a serious relationship by 20. At this rate I'll start reproducing sooner than my father did. On a tangentially related note, I never expected my parents to still be together after I moved away from home. I spent half of my childhood just waiting for them to get a divorce but no. I've been gone from home for a while now and they're still going strong.

I never expected adulthood. One day I was just minding my own business when all of a sud- RESPONSIBILITIES!
