Strange and Cryptic Engravings
« on: May 23, 2012, 03:11:57 pm »

This thread will be for both the sharing and figuring out the meaning of the cryptic engravings on all of our walls. For example, engraved on one of my walls is

Now, who the heck is 'Builder' Confusebolted? He's not in my fortress. The guy who engraved it is named 'Builder' Shadmalal(weird a)th, as you can see in the image. And why is Confusebolted hugging 2 sparrows and not making a +sparrow roast+ out of them, for my fortress (or his fortress, whatever) to devour? This sort of thing is something to be figured out, so let us be dwarven Sigmund Freuds!

You must have abandoned a past fortress.

This looks like a fortress dwarf from a prior fortress of yours. At abandon, they become historic figures.  He probably took sparrows as pets.

In raw/objects/language_DWARF.txt, I find:
[T_WORD:CONFUSE:shadmal]
and
[T_WORD:BOLT:al<86>th]

So "Shadmalalath" is simply Dwarvish for "Confusedbolted".  He made an engraving of himself. I suspect that is you pull up his thoughts and preferences screen, you'll find that one of his favorite things is sparrows. He made an engraving of himself with somethings he likes. Statues and engravings are often of a drawf and something he either likes or detests.

Have them killed. Nothing solves a problem quite as effectively as simply having it killed.

Now this is what I made this thread for :) Thanks for the explanation, we are now one step closer to understanding the minds of dwarven engravers.

At least he's not psychologically torturing other dwarves by engraving the victims surrounded by things they hate and looking terrified, in their own bedrooms.

Urist McWeenog has slept in a bedroom like a personal palace recently. Urist McWeenog has suffered psychological damage recently.

Too lazy to search the forums for it, but someone posted in this section about their engraver putting up a picture of the mayor surrounded by giant roaches, with the mayor cowering, in the mayor's bedroom.  Turned out the mayor detested giant roaches, and the engraver had a grudge against the mayor.

This obviously depicts the sadistic nature of dwarves.

I once had a blacksmith become legendary through a strange mood so I set him to work creating gold statues with which to fill the fort. But I never was able to understand why he would only create statues of butterflies and butterfly-related artwork.

Now I have my answer.

My personal favorite is when the dwarf makes a statue of himself admiring a statue of himself.

This happens every time I use engravers. It's either blood and suffering, or the mayor cowering in front of something, unless it's engraved by a moron who engraves a vicious looking circle.

That should be a new type of project, making a rug design in dwarf fortress (With accurate coloring)

I had a masterful leather sewing on a quiver where the militia commander was surrounded by bolts.
