Farewell to the Rickroll (Rickroll'd)
« on: May 23, 2012, 11:01:06 am »

http://torrentfreak.com/rickroll-meme-destroyed-by-copyright-takedown-120523/

The best part? AVG Technologies is where the copyright complaint originates from. The same people who bring you the latest and greatest in anti-virus-as-malware.

Not that I have that much affection for the meme, but it's just another example of IP squatting. I'm sure AVG wants to sell the rights to use the video to some advertisers or something. I really hope the 4chan mob activates for this one and makes AVG pay dearly for their copyright.

My first thought was: Why isn't this in the happy thread?

And then I read the rest. Obviously, AVG is going to incessantly Rickroll everyone who uses their products.

That's like asking since when has syphilis been as bad as gonorrhea.

Is removing one video going to stop people linking to the many others that exist?

When Youtube completely complies with the C&D order, yes?

Not really. I haven't heard many people saying AVG is utterly terrible, just slower than expected. Or too big, but thats bloat, not mal.

Since when is AVG as bad as Norton?
Last couple of versions. AVG used to be the muthafuckin' bomb when it came to AV software. Then it steadily got bloatier and bloatier. I finally jumped to avast last year after I determined that an AVG upgrade was responsible for hosing my entire system. Thus, I'd argue AVG has been rickrolling its users for some time now.

Mal in my definition is when anti-virus can't distinguish between a legitimate user and not. As RK points out, AVG prevents you from uninstalling it or disabling many of its start up protocols, like it's dialer and such. It also causes me no end to headaches in tech support, because it's always interfering with legitimate processes.

There are soooo many other things that are hosted in a "less than legal" manner on youtube, the trouble is that the videos just crop up too quickly to squash. This does mean that a lot of older rickroll video links will now break though.

Yeah, it happened before with the Hitler meme - the one with a scene from the movie with subtitles changed. Just more and more started cropping up. This one is somewhat easier to take down because people mostly linked to the same version, but still - I wouldn't worry about this clip being unavailable.

Still, it's one of the most ridiculous examples of DMCA in action.

First, they came for Hitler; but I said nothing because....dude, it's HITLER.
Then they came for the Rickroll; but still I said nothing.

Then they came for the lolcats, the goatse, the rage comics....

....wait, remind me why this is bad again?
