Sounds like its time for orbital bombardment.
Drop a kitten from 100z, and grapeshot the goblin army with relativistic bone fragments...

Drop a siege at another siege! Bonus point if you do it without cage traps and disarming, for example with retracting bridges.

I've learned the hard way to never dig a channel next to a garbage dump zone, especially one that you are using as a rock dump. It is virtually guaranteed that someone will come along with a rock marked for dumping while your miner is in the channel. And of course, if there is a hole next to a garbage dump zone, the dwarf will toss the item down the hole instead of putting it in the dump zone. I ended up with both of my miners in the hospital last night that way. And of course, each was still carrying their picks, the only picks had in my fledgling fort.

This just in, one featherwood log ruined a child's rib and liver.
(Also, remains and such crap hit people, and I'm almost sure they could bruise bones. Yes, fluffy wambler remains and dead goblin cartilage are dangerous!)
Now I can only fear the effects of native platinum and slade boulders.

I don't mean to alarm you, but it appears that your Dwarves are all in fact elephants.

I have been diligently attempting to get anybody to drop anything down a set of stairs due to job cancellation, and just when I'd nearly given up I decide to go and build a constructed wooden wall above the set of stairs, then have it deconstructed.

This seems to be what happened in the original post as I watched the log careen down the stairway, striking an unlucky fisherdwarf 3 times.

I'm going to attempt this a few more times in slow motion to determine what's happening during impact.  When dwarves dropped the item on the stairs due to job cancellation, it just sets on the z-level that they dropped it on.

Deconstruct a wooden construction above the staircase and you get this: http://imgur.com/a/k2n0Y

I believe that was what happened to me. Makes me wonder if...  ::)

The Plan:

The "x" are stairways acting as a bridge, not connecting anything up or down (open space). When some bad guys are on the bridge, you can drop something (for sake of the argument, let's say cedar logs. That stuff is letal!). It can hit the enemy, which will proceed to follow in the bottom of the pit (filled with magma, water, spikes, or the good ol' rock floor).

Will proceed to do some tests on the cedar log shotgun, A.K.A. The Death From Above.

Water would probably work and then you wouldn't even have to reload the trap.

I'm amazed that nobody's yet brought up Durkon Thundershield's meditations on the foe.

Well, I wood, but I think I need to branch out a bit in my humor. So I'll just leaf that one be.

Thats such a tinny recognition for his lumbering sentence of puns.  Ce-dar is so much more he could have done.  Or am I just pining for more punishment?
