Author Topic: What should be built inside this chamber? (Which is also underwater...)  (Read 3120 times)

Simply put. My first megaproject.

Firstly, this will be a vertical project, with various constructions being built above each other.

The space? 144 tiles wide by  82 tiles tall by 52 Z levels high. So yeah, a big space.

The kicker, this is gonna be lived in, underwater.

The double kicker, making it durable, so a tantrum can't destroy a window and drown everyone. Only watergoing building destroyers would doom us.

I've got plans for a football stadium made out of olivine and marble blocks, and using the new minecarts to make resources move between towers., (the fort was made in 0.34.07, haven't upgraded yet.). I have had an interesting idea for the minecart stations though.

Using the moses effect with pumps to have underwater railways with dry stations. Is that possible?

Oh, and any other ideas would be appreciated .

This would be incomplete without a completely controlled waterfall.

Regarding the minecarts -- would the stuff contained in the carts be carried away by the water?

EDIT: Are you modding dwarves to live underwater, or putting a fortress in the middle of the water, or what?

Yeah, I've got two rivers and several levels of aquifer to use to fill it.

Also, I've got an aboveground area for where the trade depot will be. A 12 level pond.

I've also saved 15 levels of natural floors for farms. The first level is exposed to the sky. So strawberries can be farmed!

Edit: Underwater city, so think of Rapture from Bioshock, I guess.

Airlocks. Destructible, but not invincible. And with a liberal application of grates, you could create floodable rooms, chambers, corridors and MOAR, which can only be triggered from indoors!

At some point or another, you'll have to release lots of nasty critters into your fort. Maybe have a sequestered section linked to the cavern layers?

If I were you I'd put lots of windows in, actually, just make sure they're inaccessible to dwarves so they can't be destroyed by tantrumers. Though I don't know what the situation would be with swimming building destroyers, if they exist...

Socks inspire the same sort of emotions in dwarfs that Helen of Troy inspired in the Achaean Greeks. Although it is said that Helen's face launched a thousand ships, socks have surely launched a million ultimately-fatal Store Owned Item tasks.

Undead whales. Mandatory.

I'm thinking of blocking off windows with fortifications, made of glass obviously, so they can still look outside.

This world has no elves, unfortunately. We're also really far inland.

Sounds cold. Needs a magmafall inside.

Good question, anyone got any Science done on that, or a guess?

That's the plan, with variously colored windows to denote the social status of each dwarf.

Actually, I could even do their profession, matching their sprite color with the window...

Don't worry, plenty of magma will be added, how else are the furnaces to power themselves? :p

Plus, with 566,784 tiles to fill with water, plenty of buildings will be added to save time.

I doubt it. First off, good luck getting the water to push stuff around. There are situations where that happens, but they're really unlikely unless you've got a hole in your lake leading to the caverns or the inside of your fortress or something. Second off, the items are securely in the minecarts. There's every possibility that the minecart wouldbe carried away by a stiff current, but I'd imagine the items inside would stay put until and unless the minecart hit a wall.

Obviously you need a lever that lets the whole ocean in. A fortress is not a real fortress without a self destruct button lever.

You should build a room for waterboarding. You, know, in case you ever feel bored.

While filling a chamber is easy, I'm not entirely sure how I'd empty the chamber again. Pumps won't pump into tiles with 7/7 water, right?
