The reason that changing the name worked might have something to with file loading order (files are loaded in alphabetical order, IIRC.) Find out which files are loaded before and after plant_eb_subterra.txt and see if they could be causing the problem.

Not sure if I asked this before, but is there a way to make troll like servant races that don't live underground? I ask this question so I can add in my own kinds for my Goblinoids (and Orcs) Mod.

Pretty sure ogres fulfill those requirements. Making them evil and slow learners should be enough - assuming that the gobs have access to them in the first place.

Goblins automatically aquire ogres who are already [evil] slow learners just by being on/near a evil plain due to [USE_EVIL_CREATURES] finding evil slow learners in the surroundings.

If you actually want to tame them though, scamtank's advice above is applicable but multiple bugs means that they probably won't work super smoothly compared to unintelligent livestock.

My advice

You if you can't find a applicable biome to put trolls or a replacement, you can use [ANIMAL] on the civilisation entity and add pet tags to the creature file (below code won't work without atleast [PET] or [PET_EXOTIC]). Then you can delete the troll's biome and make them only appear in civs where the [ANIMAL] code appears, though all Dark Towers & Cave detailed sites can have access to first level subterranean trolls with [USE_EVIL_CREATURES] because they have sites that pierce the underground.

[ANIMAL_ALWAYS_AVAILIBLE] has the bonus of working like common domestic, and will let you import that animal from sites via traders even with its [PET_EXOTIC], setting a pet value for trolls may be important in this respect for game balance unless you don't mind buying and embarking with them for 1 dwarf-buck.

So apparently there is a max limit for how big creatures can get (in cm^3) in Dwarf Fortress. How big is this?

C++'s unsigned long.  "At 18446744073709551616 it work in arena but when I butcher it just disappeared"

I'm having an issue getting this Entity to show up in new gen'ed worlds
I have set this Creature to existing Human and Goblin Entities and have seen it gen both as expected.
I just cant figure out how I screwed up this Entity object that causes it not to show up.

If anyone can help, it would be much appreciated.

yes, it shows up and acts normally in Arena mode and if addedas [CREATURE:CIVTROLL] to standard vanilla entities, specifically Human and Goblin.

Have you tried it with start_biome instead of exclusive_start_biome

That seems to have fixed it.

I set the Entity to Start in Lake, Ocean, River, and Wetland.

A hamlet spawned on a Coast and the Trolls called it the Water of Disemboweling.
Another civ popped up in a swamp with two towns. And even more as I search the XML dump in Legends Viewer

This is interesting. I have not found any spawning in Lakes.

It used to be that if their start biome was the ocean, they would literally put sites out in the ocean, not on coasts or anything. If you travelled there in adventure mode of course youd find nothing, because the game couldnt actually put buildings or populations on the sea floor or invent a landmass or anything. Maybe thats been fixed, then, so they cant even put the site there in the first place, and actually have to stick to the coast. Which is okay for oceans, because they kinda have a coastline and beaches defined, and rivers they can work around and build bridges, but as far as im aware lakes dont have a defineable shore, so maybe they cant intentionally build on a lake, only incidentally build next to it?

Considering that every single major devcycle in the history of the game has been as long as it has specifically due to bugs related to site maps... nah.

TIL that items created by itemcorpse cannot be used in reactions if the creature they came from was intelligent.

This explains why I was having so much trouble tracking down why a reaction wasn't working.  Unfortunately, unless there is a work around for this "feature" then I am kind of sunk.

Anyone have any ideas on how to get around this if in fortress mode I want an intelligent creature to drop a usable item on death,  or some other method of simulating stripping a dead creature of gear?  Or am I screwed?  Making the creature unintelligent is off the table - they show up as both mercs and siegers (and they show up as mercs because of migration to other civs - their entity doesn't have the [MERCENARY] tag).
