It has it set to autosave every 30 seconds, but also to delete the automatic backup file whenever I save a document.  I have no idea where these backup files would appear.

EDIT: I also have three iterations of DF on my laptop: 40.23, 40.24, and a set of backup raws for 40.24.  I don't know why this would cause a problem.

Backups will cause duped raws.

Where would I go find those, if there are any?  Would extra installations of the game count as backups?

I'll have to scour my computer for .txt files - any telltale signs of a backup?

...They'll only cause duped raws if they're in the raw/objects folder.

There is exactly one of each necessary file in the object folders.  Therefore that can't be the problem.  What I mean by "backup raws" is that I have downloaded another instance of DF entirely.  It isn't a "backup save".  It's a completely fresh re-download that hasn't been touched.  Is that what you mean, or is this another dead end?

It doesn't matter what creature or what file I put in, it still messes it up.  I was thinking of showing you an affected world anyway, since you know a lot more about this than I do.

Does it matter whether or not a fort has been started?

Which file is the creature in?

EDIT: Also, saves have their own raws and you have to gen a new world when you remove or add anything to the raws.

The creature is, I believe, in creature_temperate_new.

And I know that, I've been genning worlds like mad the past several days.

I can find nothing wrong with the save at all. Can you tell me what the problem you're seeing is?

When I create a world, no oysters spawn, pond turtles only sometimes spawn, and only around 10-100k mussels spawn.  I understand that oysters and mussels should both be "innumerable".

That's not guaranteed, as those creatures are not UBIQUITOUS.

The pond turtles I understand, but it seems like the worlds never gen any oysters, ever.  What's the difference between not spawning, spawning in finite numbers, and being innumerable?

I made oysters ubiquitous and they still didn't spawn.  And yes, I did gen a new world afterwards.


EDIT: More accurately, it made my starting seven into grimelings.

Yeah no you're duplicating raws like they were money, man. Your "dwarf" has jumped down about 23 places down the array, so I'm guessing there's a whole clone file sitting your raw folder somewhere that's getting read by the game.

I removed the "ubiquitous" tag and it turned everything back to normal-ish.  Oysters and mussels spawned, but no pond turtles.

There isn't a single thing wrong with any of my raws as far as I can tell.  The dwarf is the first one in creature_standards, just as it should be.  I have no idea what a clone file is.  Could it be the "extra" download of dwarf fortress?  I'm pretty sure getting rid of that didn't help anything.
