This thread is sort of meant for general purpose discussion on mech games - what should people play, what makes them cool, which are the best, etc. and so on. I'll keep links to interesting games in this post, along with provided resources for those interested in checking it out further.

List of Mech Games:
A whole lot of Mechwarrior/Battletech sutff
Earthsiege/Earthsiege2/Starsiege/Cyberstorm1/Cyberstorm2 - Last two are RTS games, same setting
Chromehounds
Exteel (dead)
Steel Battalion
Hawken
MegaMek
Gearhead/Gearhead 2 (roguelike mech game)
Titans of Steel

Super Robot Games:
Robotech
Armored Core
Shogo: Mobile Armor Division

???:
Windaom's/Bootfighters - Supposedly pretty awesome!

Ignore this section, I was clearly setting the wrong tone. Sorry doods.

No super robots (and by extension no "real" robots), no battletech-style. There's... nothing left. At least as far as I've seen. Unless you're after stuff like AT-ATs. Which... I guess?

I'll have to look at steel battalion, hum. But... what you're specifically looking for is kinda' rare in the video game world. Not quite nonexistent, but pretty bloody close.

So games like Battletech, fun as they have been, are out.

I also know MechWarrior is going to be mentioned...

Mechwarrior is Battletech, and generally is considered to be more on the "walking tank" side than most mecha.  You've kinda eliminated the vast majority of the genre here.  You state Batltetech mechs look "stupid"...what exactly are you going for?  Quad types?  More human-looking?  Less human-looking?

The only media I know of that's even more lumbering than Mechwarrior is Steel Battalion.  Frumple pretty much summed it up; what you're looking for is indeed bloody close to nonexistent.

When you say realistic Mech, I think Battletech/Mechwarrior. There's Chromehounds more recently, but that's smack dab on the same level of realism as Battletech, inspired by it even. I would of course recommend the free MW4 and the coming Mechwarrior Online.

Frankly, what mech games in the 90's are you talking about that aren't Battletech, ripoffs of Battletech, or Japanese (which are probably all far more "super robot" than Battletech)? I can't think of any. Just looking at Steel Battalion, that also seems to be on a realism level of "Battletech or less".

So, basically, give us some examples. 90's included.

There's a few Heavy Gear 2 copies floating around amazon now and then.

The mechs or powersuits in the game act less like one man armies and more like incredibly heavy infantry/special forces. The tanks in the game are quite capable of one hitting most of even the medium mechs, and their accuracy isn't something to scoff at either.

You will however blow up a multitude of tanks, heavily defended structures, and other mechs along the way even though in the canon universe you are kind of just one part of a combined arms army. It's the "special forces" leaning the game has I guess. You actually can't go toe to toe with most of your adversaries that's for sure.

Almost certainly not what the OP is looking for, but Robot Alchemic Drive for the PS2 has giant stompy robots, though its very anime/Godzilla-inspired and unrealistic. The interesting thing about the game is that the robots are controlled from outside the robot (the player controls a character controlling a giant robot). I enjoyed it.

If by walking tanks you mean slow as all heck mechs, then I guess you kind of removed every single mech game here.

And I guess, Armored Core doesn't qualify here, considering there's a ton of robots overboosting here and there, jousting against each other with laser blades and stuff.

Well the only actual Mech game i played was Starsiege 2 (old but still good).
Oh and the entire UCS faction form the Earth Series. Pure robots.

The rest are more on the mecha side... let's see...

eXteel - Korean MMO game starring customizable mechas. You can pretty much mix'n'match parts to get something you like to drive around.
APPARENTLY WENT TO MECHA HELL

Metal Fatigue - RTS game with Mechas (named Combots here) fight it out. A very good title 3 somewhat different factions One specialised in Energy weapons (lazors, plasma rifles laser chainsaws) one Kinetic (ye olde blunt force trauma of hammers and howitzer shells) and one somewhere in between (uses both lazors and dakka but not as well as the others).
Basically guys who deal Kinetic damage are weak to kinetic damage and vice versa so it's in your best interest to nab their parts reverse engineer them for use them against them.

There are 3 maps the game takes place simultaniously.
Orbit (there are some geocentric platforms you can build on... usually solar colectors because they work at 100% effectiveness and power is the main resource)
Surface (plain old surface solar collectors woth at 25% effeciency but also sports some lava pools to siphon with workers)
Underground (Solar collectors don't work (duh) but lava pools are way richer)

As a honorable mention: Aircraft actually behave like actual aircraft! They don't just stop there and trade shots like in starcraft but actually fly around trying to hit eachother with their (horribly underpowered due to scale of the game) lasor cannons.

Did i say it's one of my favourite RTS games? Well it is.

As for realism... those things are somewhat lumbering and slow compared to not only regulat Japanimation Gundamthings but even the fastest setup (Neuropa with speed legs and basic torso/weapons) has trouble with catching up on a basic tank.).

I think I played it a little in the early beta, didn't figure out how to do shit (because at the time it was only half translated) and then moved on to be busy with something else.

First: Don't just limit yourselves to what I'm interested in, there's plenty of value in discussing the other stuff. :P

Moving on:
Oh man, I totally forgot chromehounds. That is definitely going to have to go on the list.

Another game to throw in there people might be interested in: Battlezone: Rise of the Black Dogs.

While strictly speaking a tank game, rather than a mech game, you can still build or still mechs in most in most of the later levels. And climbing out of your tank, pulling out a sniper, shooting the pilot of a mech and then riding over to commandeer it is quite fun. Not the best mech game, but good.

As to realistic/not realist, I know mechs are inherently unrealistic, but as an example: hands. Hands ruin it for me. Who would put hands on a mech? That is just the most retarded thing, and I just can't get over it. Call it a flaw in my neural wiring, but it's all the more jarring in an otherwise fairly down-to-earth game like mechwarrior. Battletech, its fine. The whole setting is absurd, so it fits right in.

A light, thing limbed scout mech moving quickly I can buy. I know, technically unfeasable, but there's no instant mental recoil, no immediate immersion breakage that I can't shake.

- Also, was there really a starsiege 2? I loved the hell out of Starsiege. O_O

On the Mechwarrior/ Battletech thing - I was definitely not thinking Battletech here. Bluh, can't remember the name of what I'm getting it confused with. Something... fuck, it's gone. Had mechs that could turn into planes and back, mostly kicking the shit out of mechs that couldn't.

Definitely Robotech, you're thinking of. I was even about to ask you if that's what you were talking about before I got to the end of reading your post.

Macross.

Also Glyph (Noryasha!), I completely agree with you in regards to realistic mech designs. That's why I don't really like Gundams or any other Japanese humanoid style robots anymore. As a kid I collected their model kits but as an adult now they just feel unrealistic.
