Is fertilizing worth it now?  I haven't tried it in many years but it always seemed to be a waste of time and wood in previous versions.

Doesnt really need that many logs to be effective - and wood is dirt cheap to buy.
Producing the potash isnt trouble either, a random hauler can do it and depending on how heavily you want to fertilize you can get through a year with only a dozen or so of bars.

Back in my day underground tree farms were a major pain in the ass to set up and buying wood was unheard of.  Good to hear that it is a bit easier now, I will have to try it.

Now get off my lawn.

You brew plants.  You eat meat.

What about Dimple Cups and Pig Tails? :P

You can definitely brew pig tails.

Well, the pig tails can be brewed, but dimple cups wait until my farming industry is churning along nicely.  They can only be used for dye, so I don't even bother bringing the seeds, either the first dwarf caravan will have a bag or two, or I'll hit the first cavern before I need to start planting them.  Once I hit cavern, it doesn't take long for blue mushrooms to start sprouting all over my soil layers.  When I have them, I set them to grow only in winter since only plump helmets and dimple cups are in season, and I usually have so many plumps I can have a plot or two cranking out dimples.

That is an insane and dangerous plan.  I approve wholeheartedly.

is there any use in dyeing except for increasing value?

Nope, that's all it does.

Yeah, that's pretty much it. But it does a good job at that, high quality clothes that are are expertly weaved and dyed can be very lucrative, and the resources are all renewable, unlike metals. Let's face it, rock crafts are just a poor man's sock industry.

Another person on the forum mentioned making dimple dye his "national color" or something like that, and I think he was on to something. You could incorporate the dyed clothes into your military's uniform, I suppose.

Sad thing is, dwarves dont seem to acknowledge a masterwork emerald dyed dress, whether they find it in a bin or wear it. There is little to no point in dyeing other than flavour and increased fortress wealth when you seize/buy every caravan with other trade goods anyway.
I think toady missed something there; he gave them bad thoughts about clothing but no good ones? Textile industry isnt about making dwarves happy like brewing, masonry, etc. - it's about making them mad faster.

Well, it used to be that dwarves would only get unhappy thoughts from being unclothed as soon as it happens and they weren't really clever enough to swap out their clothes before it happened. I think it's been fixed now though. They'll get new clothes when they need it and they get continuous bad thoughts from being naked. Or something like that.
