Powder Toy - Trust Us, We Are Science
« on: May 20, 2012, 07:04:51 pm »

Powder Toy is, as many of you may know, a sandbox physics game that has heat, electricity and pressure simulation. It updates very frequently, and new things are constantly being added. The last powder toy thread that we had dried up in 2010 and I didn't want to necro it, so here you go.

Let's make science.

Like I've said in the happy thread, I've figured out to make a light generator without resorting to CLNE.

Here's a set of instructions:

Step 1: Place some QRTZ (preferably moderately large; see list of pros and cons for reasons).

Step 2: Without moving the cursor, use the [ key (Only press it once!) to step the brush down a few sizes. Right click to hollow out the QRTZ. You should be left with a shell of QRTZ several pixels thick.

Step 3: Select GLOW, and fill the cavity created in the previous step with it.

Step 4: Apply PHOT.

And there you have it, at light-generator.

Pros: You can control the colour of the light by adjust temperature and pressure (Although pressure may require an Energy Wall around the QRTZ to prevent the pressure from equalizing)
Cons: There's a minimum size for these generators, below which they will not be able to sustain PHOT-generation. What that exact size is, I haven't discovered yet.

PRO-Tip: Make sure the QRTZ layer is at least five pixels thick.

Watching this. I've heard lots of weird things about Powder Toy, never used it.

To make fog: Pause the game. Place water vapor. Cool water vapor to below freezing. unpause. surround with metal. spark the metal.

Powder Toy is neat, but I'm no good at finding neat interactions like you guys.

Has anyone succeeded at making a self sustaining steam engine yet?

(assuming fire is cloned and thus not an issue)

Keep trying. You'll probably stumble upon something by accident. That light thing I found was by accident, for example.

One thing I like is designing atomic bombs. All you need is a explosive or powerful heat source to start the chain reaction, metal casing and loads of plutonium and uranium. By arranging other elements in a structure, you can create some complex reactions. I'm trying to make a working nuclear reactor that doesn't go chernobyl everytime I activate it now.

A ring of RPEL is good at containing materials, so that might help.

Looking at the FAQ (hoping to find some system requirements), I'm confused. Do you need to register an account and play this online?
