Fun with undead !!SCIENCE!! : Were-creature science

Zombies, Necromancers, Lycans and Vampires. Team undead science go!
(Proving myths true so your Dwarves can sleep at day, knowing they only have a 95% chance of being found drained of all blood in the morning. If you have a hypothesis, I or another will try to test it, as long as you say it).

Current focus: Lycans
  • Do were-creature corpses that get heavily mutilated animate and rejuvenate every lunar cycle, effectively cloning themselves?
-NOPE. Toady fixed it, and fixed it well (sadly). Lycan zombies are no longer possible, their syndrome is lost upon death.
  • Do were-creatures still pass on syndromes to zombies? Do were-creature zombies still pass on their syndromes to live Dwarves?
-NOPE. For above reasons.
  • What differences can be noted on friendly Lycans when they change forms? Attributes? Feelings? Loyalty?
-TA DA!
  • Attribute wise, anything gained in one change carries onto the next, which has led to wonderful situations where Lycans who frequently suffer damage heal quicker, become tougher and so on become nearly indestructible when in their animal form, to the point where they can take several hits to the head with masterwork steel bolts and still live.
  • Loyalty wise, they are treated as berserk when changed. They will attack everything that is not a Lycan of it's own kind when transformed. Killing a were-civet of your own entity does not trigger loyalty cascades.
  • Wrestling done between Dwarves and WereDwarves can sometimes carry over after the change back. This WILL cause a loyalty cascade, but is a rare occurrence.
How do the actions done in Lycan form affect Lycans in Dwarf form? Do killings of other Dwarves cause unhappiness thoughts in Dwarves? What of justice and other normal repercussions of killing Dwarves, including tragedy prone targets?
  • One Dwarf recently killed it's spouse whilst transformed, it is noted that before it killed it's spouse it was very unhappy (as a result of serious injury received). After killing it's spouse, the Were-civet showed no signs of unhappiness, and when transformed back, the Dwarf cared about nothing anymore. Lycan Dwarves appear to be almost immune to happiness bombs as long as they transform into lycan form quickly enough.
  • Lycan kills are immune to justice. Kills made by lycans are immune to justice. Were creatures who are the Fortress guard are immune to justice.
  • Are there any effective methods of infecting Dwarves that do not result in certain death of at least one?
-The casualties are bothersome. Otherwise, no. Just add more peasants, it works fine.

  • Testing that could be lethal to live were-creatures is being postponed until more than one can be forged.

Lethal tests pending:
  • Do were-creatures never die of starvation or dehydration?
True. Although in Dwarf were creatures, they can sometimes get unhappy about it. Were creatures still drink and eat despite never dying of the lack of either - and so do not have the weakness of vampires in that they don't slow down due to lack of alcohol.
  • Weaponization. How effective would it be?

Good job! Now figure out how to transform them into useful members of society, or at least whatever state they were in when they died. (Some modding required.)

I take it you still need a Terrifying Biome to enact this scientific endeavor, right? At least you don't have to worry about any upset ghosts customers coming back and suing you, right?

I might try that, because you could technically make an interaction that brings things back to life, without actually making them undead.
As for making them useful... Unfortunately a result of the cryo-stasis is that the Dwarves in question end up a bit grumpy when woken up, so it's best to let them sleep.

Future objectives:
  • Afterlife science.
  • Cloning a were-civet corpse.

CLONE IT ALL!!!

Managed to infect two Dwarves with lycanthropy from my one and only captured were-creature, but one of the two Dwarves died. I'm going to try clone the one that died, and do sciencey stuff with the other.
Also, civets are pretty awesome.

I thought from the thread title that this would be similar to the "frozen in time" state that falling creatures could get from a rare bug. I actually can't tell if the OP is just humor, or if there is an actual discovery in there. Could someone please enlighten me?

The Undead never decay and can heal their own wounds so their bodies technically last forever..

Would be cool if there was an option to research the secrets of necromancy and if you did the mountainhomes would abandon you, but youd have loads of tireless workers who can heal up after being brutally attacked

Dunno, I don't have a lot of completely unharmed corpses to test with, which is why I'm going to start trying to clone the were-civet.

Corpses decay, eventually into nothing but bones. Essentially this does freeze their corpse in time, stopping them from ever decaying, and for some reason healing skin deep wounds.

Cloning?  Does that mean giving a zombie lycanthropy, or what?  I must learn!

Lycanthropy can't be passed onto zombies, but if you recover (or fail to recover) the corpse of a lycanthrope and resurrect it - you can chop off both it's hands, resurrect those and wait for the full moon. Once that happens, you now have three fully grown corpses, with which you can begin the process anew.
